π Letters From Gnome #3: Comic Week (Patreon)
Content
Gareth the Rogue definitely wished to be more nimble.
Welcome back, Gnome Pals!
And it's issue #3 already! This week, I'm going to be talking about genies and the boys who tolerate them when I speak on my 3-issue (and continuing) comic Jinn & Garrett; a bit about how it originated, what brought me to the project, and what the themes have evolved into. I hope after coming away from this newsletter, you'll take a moment and read the first issue.
In fact, why not go read it right now! You can find it free-to-read (away from Patreon paywall restrictions) at WelcomeChange.me by clicking on the image below:
π¨ Special Feature: Jinn & Garrett
It was a little over 3 years ago that all this started. I was in the midst of finishing a commission promotion (Warp in the Park), and I was trying to come up with a premise of a slightly more sinister story. An elemental force. Maybe a succubus?
Okay, maybe not. How about a genie? Not a novel concept, I'll admit, but I really just wanted the scenario: an immediately malevolent being, completely dominant, with a built-in and understood lore: a twisted wish.
Now that I had our heavy, I needed a victim. Or, maybe a hero -- at this point, I hadn't decided what the comic was going to actually be. I knew I wanted the comic to have kinky transformations, lots of power play, and a captive main character. A bit of a rube.
So we had our players, but I still needed a premise. This rube happened upon a really cheap apartment. The problem was, it was haunted by a malevolent genie who delighted in tormenting her roommates by transforming them in demeaning and demoralizing ways.
The title of the comic needed to emphasize that roommate relationship. The genie couldn't move, it was bound to the apartment. And, the roommate couldn't leave because he definitely couldn't afford another place. So, he was forced to grin and bear it.
This newsletter and backstory is getting a little long, so I think I'll continue it the next Jinn & Garrett drop week.
Next time: The little experiment continues and builds a tidy little story; The addition of a very important supporting character, exploring what enthusiastic consent means for an evil jinn, and how a young man struggles with identity when he literally changes forms against his control.
