Hello, all. First, a note that there won’t be art this weekend. I’ll get into the whys below the warning.

Content warning: self-harm (not me)

So, most of you know I haven’t been as active as I usually was a few months ago. The hiatus started at the beginning of October, and the burn-out was due to a bunch of reasons (frequent sickness including COVID and RSV), stressful work conditions, and getting my father’s estate closed. Then, in September, my nephew lost his life in a car crash. It really hit my sister and brother-in-law hard, obviously (he was her step-son, but she had too big a heart to ever call him anything but son.)

In mid-November, my sister lost her life. It may have been accidental, and it may not have, but she took too much of her prescription medicine and passed away. She was always the one that remembered birthdays, told us about upcoming cousins’ marriages and graduations, she was a football mom to every member of the local high school team, and she was a tremendous, brassy broad who was as (at times) difficult as she was loving.

She was incredible.

My wife and I are having my niece and nephew over this weekend, and we’re going to do all the fun things we can in Minneapolis (they are from small-town Minnesota). It’s going to take all of my energy to be happy and excited for them, all the while knowing their mom, my baby sister, can’t be here.

I wouldn’t have posted something like this months ago. I don’t know that I’ll open up again about it, and although I know you all mean the best, I can’t field 170 messages from you all with condolences. I just wanted to let you all know that there are hard times that hit us all. Don’t make a permanent decision for something that may be temporary. It’s not hopeless, and don’t give up. Find your people. Reach out. Make sure they’re someone who cares. Talk to a co-worker. A friend. A brother. Don’t be alone with your pain. And understand your friends are there to help; if they suggest you talk to someone, that’s them helping the best way they can.

Thanks for listening. I’ll be back with the weird art in a week or so.

I… I’m so sorry for your loss. Please, take all the time you need to recover from such an unimaginable loss. We can wait.

I'm so sorry, G. No need to respond. Went through a much less traumatic version of this during the last year. Our hearts are with you.

Be well, and thank you for sharing. Please never think that you owe anything. We're here to support you, and that means also giving you time/space when you need it, especially in times where emotions and circumstances need extra time to process. Sending love!

Thank you for letting us know, and I'm very sorry at the loss of two family members. I'm glad you're spending time with your Niece and Nephew, they definitely need you in their life.

Gnome, my condolences on your losses. I know what you are going through. Eight weeks ago (Halloween) my father (87) died from suicide. My brothers and I are going through all the legal and financial stuff dealing with his estate.

At moments like this I'm reminded of a line from She-Hulk. To paraphrase: I hope you're able to show your niece and nephew a good time during hard times. Love and prayers to you and your family.

Hey; one thing to know: if everyone agrees, the representative of the state can cut checks early from inheritance. Talk to your lawyer, and obviously you state laws will vary, but sometimes you can smooth over the static of "why is this taking so long?" questions with a partial distribution. Sorry for your loss as well.

What I owe is what I expect you all should receive; and when it can't be art, it should be communication -- that way you all are armed to make decisions on how you spend money. I never take support for granted. It's earned. Thank you for your support. :)

I'm sorry to hear about all the hard times you're going through. I've been there before. I lost my mum to Covid at the end of January 2021. Even now we're still sorting through the stuff she left behind, mostly properties and bank loans. So I know how hard it is to move on. But life moves on and there's always positive things to look forward to. Just a couple of months ago my Brother had his first kid and he's a little delight (when he's not crying). So take your time and take good care of yourself and your loved ones. We don't matter quite as much as them.
