The medal Gibbs awards the corporal at the end of the episode is the Silver Star, which is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. My thoughts on the scene with Ziva and the guy was that they embodied pure male/female energy - just a man and a woman and a lot of adrenaline. He stopped his rampage because Ziva stopped being an aggressor, - that's what got through to him, that she was being solely feminine energy. Ziva stopped being aggressive partly for that reason -- being smart to recognize force would respond with force so she did the opposite -- but also because the earlier conversation with Tony & McGee was correct: a bigger, stronger male "conquered" her and our primitive minds react to that. And I think that it was a wonder for her as well - she's used to and very proud of always being strong, in control, and not submissive in any way. As a female, I can attest that being confronted with that kind of combination in that guy would very much make one weak in the knees. :)
