I am know you are further ahead. The duck thing, a Pez dispenser!! A craze in its day, a pointless item to the unknown. I assume no lifts was to force a class system, that people would end up staying within certain floors and to make sure the down deep felt lesser, and the top felt more important. Helps reduce a rebellion when groups of people of perceived different classes don't mix. Stops like minded (curious people) forming their own groups faster. Same with radios, like social media, isolates people and helps the top keep control by minimising information.
