"Donkey balls" explanation - when Alex first said "donkey balls" he explained that Martian blacks ops teams use code words and phrases such as "donkey balls" to verify their covert status. The code words and phrases are stored in the ship's codebook, and Holden used the "key" he got from the Martian who helped them escape in episode 4 (Lopez) to open the code book storage drawer. The little scroll they found in the code book listed the 3 code words that verified their covert status. All ships that need those code words have those code words in their code book, as part of their standard operating procedure. And don't worry about being confused. The confusion is intentional. Believe it or not, you're less confused than most. But worry not, many of your questions will be answered and your confusion will be sorted out. And the way the writers present those answers to you is quite satisfying.

Did you notice that Holden is heading to Eros to find "Lionel Polanski" and Miller is also heading there in search of Julie? Amos is a complex character and we start getting little clues about his background. Where he grew up in Baltimore is a survival game. His "boss" called it "The Churn". This episode is called Windmills. As Avasarala is approaching the Holden property, we see Wind turbines, which are modern day windmills. In the book, Don Quixote by Cervantes, Don Quixote is said to be "Tilting at Windmills" thinking they were giants to be defeated. Elise has the book on a stand in her house and says it was Holden's favorite as a child. Rocinante and the first episode title, Dulcinea, are both references from that book. I agree that it was a little too convenient that the MCRN hasn't changed the black ops codeword "Donkey Balls" in all the years that Alex has been out of the service.

ill be honest, i aint picking up on any of that because its all just left for you to work out with no context. Im getting the feeling you only put all this together if youve read the books, which i wont be doing. I have no vested interest in any of the characters at the moment as i know too little about them. Holden is about the only guy i like, the rest are just background to me at present, i still haven't even figured out the rest of their names yet! I agree not changing these so called access codes/words in all these years, thats a pretty good way of circumventing them which is exactly what took place.

Donkey-Balls wasn't one of the words/terms on the scroll they found. He just added that at the end because he heard it used before. The three words were "ubiquitous", "mendacious", and "polyglottal."

I got the impression that they left them alone because of the Black ops code word, not because they gave them the normal ones. I guess they also knew not to dig, because the "ubiquitous, etc., would have come up associated with the Tachi off the destroyed Donnager which would be suspicious. It's a stretch, but sort of works, I guess.

I thought "ubiquitous", "mendacious", and "polyglottal" were the black ops words.

I'm confused about what you are confused. What is unclear to you? Maybe we could help you without spoiling future episodes... You explained the code book yourself just fine. It is very similar to how it is done in reality (although likely not with the phrase "donkey balls"). You also recognized that the spy is the corporate spy Chrisjen Avasarala "borrowed" from the guy in the beginning of last episode. Btw. the spy also was seen in last episode (and in the end recording Holden and Naomi in the bar). You also saw how and why Miller got fired (he was expected to not crack the case because he is kind of a "station joke" like Dawses said, but he couldn't let it go). Now he is following the next clue to Eros (a shuttle from the "Anubis" is there). Holden and crew are also on their way to Eros in search of Fred Johnsons contact person. So the storylines converge. Miller also already pretty much explicit spelled out what happened. Scientists found "something" on Phoebe. "Somebody" killed them and send the ship "Anubis" (the flight data Julie bought from the Data Broker) to transport "something" from Phoebe to Eros. Julie contacted Dawses with the flight data and with the help of Fred Johnson they send the "Scopuli" to intercept the "Anubis". Something went wrong and the "Scopuli" ends up as bait for Holden and Crew. Ships start blowing up. "Somebody" seems to be willing to start a war to cover up whatever was found on Phoebe. We're not yet meant to know what exactly was found on Phoebe and who is behind all of this. Thats part of the mystery and intrigue. But I think, everything else is pretty clear at this point.

Hmm, that's interesting, I thought they were just normal identifiers, but you may be right. I guess I don't understand why the Tachi would have Black Ops codewords.

I think the main thing is that he's not invested in the characters yet, and I have no idea how to help with that. But things do start ramping up now with the next episodes and some more answers provided.

From the fandom wiki - Kenzo Gabriel (the camera-eye guy who had just been caught sending out a rogue signal) informed the Roci's crew that, being a Martian gunship, there would be secret code words for when they were working covert ops and needed to be left alone, which Alex confirmed with an incident he witnessed involving communications including the words "donkey balls." Managing to locate the code words in time, the MCRN ship was satisfied and left the Rocinante alone. So Alex just tossed "donkey balls" on the end after the 3 code words because he didn't have anything to lose.

I can see why this is a struggle without reading the books (which are excellent BTW) but many have not read them. I think we can all say confidently that the next 3 episodes will continue to answer a lot of your questions and then if you wish to continue you have completed the hard work of world building and the launch of the story line takes off from there. Its a complex world and the writers do not spoon feed the audience. Every word, every scene, every piece of action is important and linked to everything else eventually. I am glad you are watching episodes fairly often because that will pay off in helping you put the pieces together. I think all of us here hope you continue because not only will you begin to like all the characters, the story will become more and more interesting and exciting.

its the kind of show u should watch the episodes twice to get all the context
