This is the 3D project I've been working on for the past month or so. It's been taking a while—maybe longer than I'd hoped, haha. But I wanted to show an update on the progress.

I've always been captivated by the 1980s to 90s NASA concepts of the future and I wanted to do something in that style. As I was doing some research for this, I realized I also don't think I've ever seen non-concentric gravity rings on a spacecraft. When I sketched it and then mocked it up, I really liked the way it looked. So that became the visual design that I built the rest of the craft around.

I also found out recently that humans are returning to the moon('s orbit) on Artemis II in April. Currently the launch is scheduled for April 1st, but it's already been pushed back once, so it may be later.

Anyway I thought it would be fun to put a little more time and effort into this project as a celebration of the upcoming launch—which will also mark the first time NASA has put people into space with their own equipment since 2011 when the Shuttle was retired. So despite this possibly not being the best use of my time, at least as far as the portfolio work goes, I'm going to do a little animation with it later this month.

The above render is 1k and there's a larger 4k version attached.

Ahh, I love the rings! IN motion, they could almost look a bit like an interlocking gear system, as if the whole station is one giant skeleton clock in space [not really, but sorta!] :D

Pulsar

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm going to animate them going in opposite directions. (Well two one way and one the other.) There is a logic to the ship as well. As I was building it, I was thinking about what each part would do and how they fit together. I think that helps sell it as well. And one of the things I thought about is how the rings would work and balance each other when they're offset like that.

KarmaKat

Very cool! I'm curious if the math works out for them? Or would gravity have a changing gradient of intensity across the ring?

Pulsar

Nah, I didn't bother figuring that out. x) It almost certainly wouldn't be correct. I was just trying to make it look believable, while also being artistic.

Piper Malone

Really fascinating and interesting design. Love the idea with the rings!

Griffon the Grizzly

Has your cardinal ever gone to space in your art or imagination?

Xandere

Just saw a video of Pulsar's cardinal lady friends swooping in and taking his full attention. ;)

Pulsar

Hmm, I don't think so. I never really thought of him that way

Plasmab

This is really cool! You ever think you'd be willing to do a diagram/breakdown of the components/sections of the spacecraft to point out what would be going on inside in different locations? Like living quarters, air recycling, hydroponics, central control room, etc Love stuff like this, hope you do more <3

Pulsar

That'd be fun! But unfortunately I feel like I've already spent way too much time on this one for what it was supposed to be. x) I might come back to it at some point. But I gotta work on some other stuff here soon too

Plasmab

That's totally fair, work has to come first. Well definitely appreciate you sharing! <3
