Designing a Coin

Great one

Benja Min

I love these. Thanks..

Mr. Nerd

I appreciate how much effort is being put into the coins because in ancient and medieval history, numismatic evidence is super important and can tell you all about the culture and time when a given coin was made, and it’s cool someone could (in theory) use the coins from Dynamo in the same way!

Benjamin Brenner

I love the idea of a coin made out of some kind of metal, with a plastic or resin border. Perhaps the border could be used to protect the coin, or maybe there could be different colored borders, giving the coin different values, or even signifying different eras or minting facilities. Lots of neat ideas to explore here!

Sybren Lukkien

I would love to see the robot rubber duck build video

Phil South

Ian, my dude, look up bronze clay :) make a mold, cast the putty and then fire it with a broulet torch on a brick. Instant metal.

Oh and of course Moebius was the king of the tall hats. :D I am currently making patterns for cosplay Moebius style hats. (Another rabbit hole I should get my ass out of and make some movies)

The many ways of Lux's practical props is so amazing to see every time, of course the coins are great but the vacuuformed plastic shells for da musics?! Great!! Completely foreign to me!

Phil South

kinda makes you want to get a vacuum forming machine... or make friends with someone who has one

Matt W.

This is a little unrelated but have you seen the world building of the finals?

"A currency where the whole point is that no two are the same, like the coin is some sort of identification marker." Ian, you just reinvented Bitcoin but physically

Feelies! Remember feelies from old video games? Like an Infocom game? I would absolutely LOVE to have a coin or disc as a sort of Dynamo feelies!

Re: casting coins (and similar) - You could absolutely print the coins on an FDM printer using a wax-like filament, clean up, then use the prints to make master molds (see: investment or lost wax casting). Or resin print, make a silicone mold, and cast wax to make the "original" for the investment mold. Extra steps but would probably require less clean up.

Lux Taylor Art

They're surprisingly inexpensive (by specialty equipment standards)!

OMG I'd love to design some album covers for dynamo! I think we would all be proud to be a part of it, regardless of how small and specific it would be

Alex Silver

Another lovely tutorial! btw have you done a show and tell vid on the pipe being pulled away - I would love to try that!

Noah B Balanda

Great video! I love the idea of a penny machine being used to repurpose random materials into currency.

TheTalies

I really like the coin in the beginning with the jagged edge. With the euro you can feel by size and edge whether it’s a euro or fifty cents and I’m guessing that’s what you did there?

Scott Coones

Hi Ian, I wonder if this could be a good candidate for a collab with Alec Steele (https://www.youtube.com/@AlecSteele). He's a metallurgist/blacksmith/forging youtuber recently interested in stamping coins, and 3D printing with metal powders. He collaborates with other youtubers as well.

Blake Rizzo

SO excited for future things!

NickTricc

Applying modifiers individually and texts etc - select all and convert to mesh will apply modifiers and make texts into mesh. (Alt C to convert to mesh if you want the shortcut) Great vid!

Danger N00dle

Hey Ian, I'd love to see more of your workflow around water. I know you said you've used dynamic paint, but the new stuff you've shown where you're using real wakes mixed up with displacement or something This looks amazing, I want to know more 👀

Noah Le May

This would be very interesting and useful to watch actually, I agree!!

Mike Ligocki

I just hope for more posts in general!

Basile Sordet

You should look at swiss currency (bills especially), where every 5 (or 10? i don’t remember) years they do a competition and a vote to chose the new bills, there are a lot of crazy entries each time so lots of idea there. Anyway good video! Always a pleasure to watch these!

Pocket Garbage is a cool band name
