Hey Ian! Is there any chance you could use help on set once you start filming? I'm in the seattle area and Ive worked on several short films, but Id like to get some experience on a project with some more VFX, so I can see the more of the pipeline. Id love to PA or grip on the project!

IanHubert

Oh yeah????? I'll send you a message!

bittergourd

Ian, what is the shader you mentioned in the beginning?

Richard Cave

when the little ship prongs go into the socket, you are missing a trick, prongs hit little blue sparks pop out the socket, then some blue sparks run randomly front to back finally getting to the battery, the battery has those lights you get on a power tool showing how full, just needs to be subtle

Jules Otway

also curious about this. No Axis? No axes? nowacksis?

IanHubert

I want to do the sparks! Honestly it's been a reference issue- anything I can find that's about the right scale/voltage gives an arc instead of a spark pop- but we're trying to see if we can figure out some practical spark squibs- maybe I can film some elements!

Luka Hrgovic

Tnx for the shoutout ♥️♥️ Man that PISco logo is a masterpiece. The way the dot on the 'i' fits inside a 'P'. Wonderful design!!!

bittergourd

Wow! I just got them. These are amazing!

IanHubert

HAHA! Thank you! I originally had a version 1 that didn't have the dot and then was like "OH WAIT!" -version 2.

Thomas Sturm

Check out New York subway cars out in the open in heavy fog. Their power pick-up gives strong blue flashes occasionally that are about the right scale for the plug ships. At this size and power requirements, you get a strong white-blue flash on contact.

Philip Boyes

Looks great! One little thing I noticed - in the shot near the end (like 31.00-ish) is the scrollwork on the handrails a bit too fine? It just stuck out to my eye a bit. I think maybe because it doesn't really show up any shading so comes across a bit like a flat 2D plane. I wouldn't mention it except it seemed a shame to distract from everything else that looks amazing.

Thomas Sturm

About the prongs on the plug ship: This is such a genius idea that can only get worse by trying to improve it. It's ridiculous. It's oversized. It's hazardous. And this is the world where it makes sense.

Hello, love the "intestinal battery heat sink". You should check the work of Moebius when he goes by the name of "Lazlo Parker". It reminded me of that, and it is a nice lesson of composition and organic shapes usage. Maybe you know it alredy, Thank's for your inspiring work!

IanHubert

Hoho! Oh I love that!!!! Thanks for the recommendation! :D

Jonathan King

Have you read the Mortal Engines books? Muuuuch better than the movie, and several of the subsequent books are fantastic!

ScifiFilmmaker

Will you ever do a tutorial? Or try to recreate green screen shots and such on a phone? Or try to see if it's even possible? for a quicker solution for people who don't want to bring a camera rig or just don't have the money to afford a 12bit camera. Thanks, love and peace

IanHubert

Ah yeah! I want to try out Corridor Digital's new keying tool- I think there's a chance it might give significantly better results on lower bitrate rootage- I want to give it a test later this week! In the meantime- the biggest thing for filming on your phone is making sure you're filming in an app that lets you turn off digital motion stabilization, since that has a tendency to throw any motion track way off (also if you can turn off auto-exposure, that'll help, too!)

IanHubert

I haven't!!! I'll have to check them out!

ScifiFilmmaker

Thanks for the tips ✌️ appreciate it

Roman Kovalev

Hi Ian, can you do something about the car smoke tire simulation? with dirt / dust particles in it?

ScifiFilmmaker

Another question: would you ever direct a movie or even produce/showrun a TV show? I DEEPLY need this in TV form with a whole cast and 10 seasons, and I think it'd be a BIG hit if given the right promotion

BugEye Jones

I've been away way too long! I love your creativity and energy for this stuff. so fun to watch and inspiring Ian. so satisfied that I'm back here. 👍😊

Paul Spooner

A couple of my daughters walked up while I was watching around 31:00 and they were very impressed "That's so cool! There's so much detail! I like how he added all the little holes [in the walkway]"

Paul Spooner

Love the procedural touches at 33:40 You can do the same thing with geometry as well! Don't just procgen the textures!

PixelDev

Have you ever experimented with hotstpot texturing ? I know it's more of a video game technique but i think it could work great with your workflow

Cole Smith

For all of the weird failings, I LOVE Mortal Engines so much! It's such a world building dream to watch.
