Ludicrously excited. We're doing a big shoot next week, filming two Dynamo Dream episodes in five days! Trying to see if we can do things faster without sacrificing details/worldbuilding/any of that. Anyways- if you ever wanted to hear me talk a lot, here we go!

We're doing a Big Shoot!

Bridger Allen

Sorry to hear about the relationship my friend :/ if you need anyone to talk to I'm here for ya. My dm's are always open.

Steve Cypert

Hugs, Ian. I think you're making the right moves.

Blake Rizzo

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh So exciting!! Thanks so much for podcasting the whole process!!! Also, I'm so sorry about how tough the past month or so has been. Losing a loved pet in itself is the worst. Wish you well.

Loren Sherman

Your passion and talent are so inspiring, thank you for sharing your process with us and best wishes for the remainder of the production!!

DECODED

This is ridiculously exciting. Sorry you've been through such a rough patch lately.

Mason Lev

High five Ian! You got this bud!

peko

Digital Hug

Jed

Really sorry to hear about whats been happening, hope you know you've made an impact on a lot of people who love what you do

James

You have always and will continue to be an inspiration to me! Sorry you have had a hard time recently but it’s great to see you keep going! We all love you bro x

IanHubert

Haha! Love you too, James! And thanks!! I'm really excited. The past 15 years has been a lot of doing the same thing and expecting a different result (maybe THIS time post won't take 4 months!)- so I'm crazy excited to see how this all plays out! I'm really really glad I get the opportunity to try this out, so thank you!!!! :D

IanHubert

Ah thank you- I knew it would be sad, but not THIS sad- Every other time I've had a pet die it was of old age, and it's really different when they're still young and you've pictured them running around in your life for the next 13 years. But also yes!!!! It's going to be crazy exciting! :D :D

Conner

Oh man Ian, I went through a very similar ordeal, ending a relationship and losing my dog traumatically at the same time and boy… the fact that you’re functioning at such a high level still is a testament to your badassness. Keep trucking.

Fransoa

2 episodes in 4 days…and you think we will believe you-) I would like also to see how you do and organize a shot or a film. So that means going out of your office and showing us how you manage also the not blender part…because blender is only a certain part of your workflow as film maker…

Rob

Thank you for the updates Ian! About to lose a kitty myself and I know how you feel. Sorry to hear about the news with Kaitlin, and I'm happy you're still doing stuff.

Stephan

Great video! Thanks for the post. It's stuff like this that's pretty rare to find and super helpful for someone trying to figure out the complications of the overall process of putting a project together. Seeing the challenges also makes it feel less like you're the odd one out who is having a hard time. An easy misconception when established people mostly show their completed work and all the successes. *Sorry to hear about the cat and relationship.. i've lost both before. it's hard. Be sure to challenge yourself to do the hard thing; if it's easy to go head first into work to cope and get by, that's great, but maybe try taking some time to yourself as well at some point too. (my unsolicited advice anyway..) Either way, good luck with the shoot! I can't wait to see how it goes. The proposed content for after sounds super fun and interesting.

Nate

This was a great video to watch! Loved hearing all your thoughts, both personal and logistical lol. Please make more vids like these when you don't wanna do a full blown tutorial! They're just as valuable in my opinion!

bittergourd

Hey Ian, sending good thoughts your way from the other side of the water. That said, also very much entrenched in the theater scene locally so there's a huge collection of individuals that do projects like this and I am happy to put the word out if needed. I used to stage manage at a few different places here.

Robin Ruud

Lots of love from Norway, Ian ❤️ Breaks my heart to hear you're down. I'll gladly track and key some shots for ya 😜

Tim Evans

Sorry to hear about the tough time, good luck with the new chapter ❤️ Also for what it’s worth, watching you put a scene together is always helpful and interesting, regardless of whether we’ve seen you use those techniques before. Always down for giant long Ian Hubert video to sink into. Good luck with the shoot and everything, looking forward to seeing more!

Peter Dimitriou

I'm really sorry to hear what has happened in your personal life as of late, I hope you are doing okay/better now. I just thought id say thank you for being here and still trying to post and create. I just started using blender this year, in February! Your lazy tutorials had me hooked from the first moment and then I watched salad mug. I was left speechless. I never knew that something of that quality could be achieved by a single person. It inspired me to get started, that's when I fell in love with blender. Finding your patreon has been an absolute treasure, its taught me so much I cant even articulate it. AND now im finally finishing my first rotoscope project with a cg environment. I never thought id be here after 8 months and i think more or less the point im trying to make is that we think your awesome and we're rooting for you! (pretty weird coming from a text box halfway across the world) Oh, of course I want to reinforce my utmost gratitude for your teachings and effort you put into making your patreon great!

Frank Frohnhoefer

Ian, I don´t want to take the role of a wise guy here, but please be aware of that burnout. The waking up at the middle of the night and rethinking things so often are really alarming. I have been there...Ironically at my first burnout I got a young kitty cat which helped me out to somehow get my shit together. I would suggest to finish the shooting and then take a few days of. A lot of Nature/daylight and NO Social media can fix a lot of Burnout related things - but you have to do this asap... It is really Interesting, all the years when I was fighting against my Burnout, you where always some kind of role model for me which is living the dream - I had to support that monetary. Now I have the feeling you somewhat slipped into my shoes...

Jeffery F

Hey Ian, so excited for the new episodes. Thanks for making vfx creation more accessible for everyone, you have had the same impact that Andrew Kramer did for after effects for blender

Hans Bruins

Great ramblings Ian! Sorry about your personal hardships (been there) but great to see your energy to start new things.
I have listened to the whole thing and some questions came to mind; A) can you do a video about yourself? Where do you come from, what is your background, why do you do this stuff, etc. In short: who is Ian? I would love to see one. B) I hear you talk about ‘burnout’ in relation to excessive work. Burnout (a real one that is, not the one people wear as a ‘badge’) is not caused by working too much but due to mental exhaustion. These things are not the same. This mental exhaustion is also triggered by deeper mental processes. Burn-out and depression have both similar symptoms for a reason. I think what I want to say is; be careful, burnout is not a joke. A (real) burnout can put you out of work for months and I guess that is the last thing you wish for. So, please take care of yourself. C) I understand your reluctance to repeat yourself, however, in the meantime, you have new experiences, new insights, and things like the software has changed, and workflows changed accordingly. So, I think it’s okay to revisit previous topics!

SalvaM

my heart is with you, keep it rolling, we love you!

redishere

Thank you so much for everything you do, Ian, you've helped (and you're helping) me get in touch with my creative side and fall in love with filmmaking again like when I was in high school shooting DIY horror movies with my friends, back in the early 2000s. I'm sorry to hear what happened in the past months: for what it's worth, I'm sending you virtual hugs from Italy, hoping they manage to reach you after flying for 9000km.

Sebas

agree, you might feel ok now, but burnout accumulates over time just be aware of that and take some time off. Lots off love from across the pond!

Makknass

Sorry to hear about the stuff you going through. wish you the best and hope you can find some comfort in these dark times. wish all the best. ps ( awesome video btw you should release a monthly podcastish type of video only talking and giving us some updates on the stuff you are working on, life etc. )

Doug Brown

Very sorry to hear that Ian (I'm kinda in the same position this last few months). Just keep busy. Replacement therapy is key. That's my 2 cents for you. Just make sure you don't descend into the victimhood... sounds like you haven't so that's good. It's the worst thing anyone can do. You still have all of us... and if I can help in my very limited capacity lemme know... I'll even fly to Seattle if I'm allowed. With my unshaven old man look.... *think Crystal Meth Santa Claus :)

Miko Dela

Oh, Ian, I'm sorry to hear about sad things happening in your life. Please don't feel obliged to post all the things immediately, just please don't burn out the way I did. Feel free to use all the patreon money from me to just celebrate after the shoot! :)

Bo Maryniuk

After wondering why Catlin (if that's the spelling) literally gone from the radar, now I know, and I wanted to write "Ian, sorry to hear your dark times". But instead I will write: "Ian, shit happens. Your video sounds cooler at 2x playback speed-up". :-D Because "it won't be like that forever" (in good and bad times)...

Boris

I am so so happy you have a producer! This is fantastic. They literally save lives!

Ian Letarte

Praying for you and the shoot Ian!

Paul Spooner

All the best filling out your artist commune! I'd love to come out and hang for a bit, especially now that I have a Work Remote day job. Looking forward to The Boat Shoot and all the behind-the-scenes stuff you'll no doubt be doing. Maybe you could assign someone to handle the Patreon videos since you'll be busy actually directoring?

Stephan

I just want to pop in again to echo some sentiments from other posts, that it's totally still useful to revisit old techniques that you've already made videos on. Even with minor changes. It's super helpful in fact. And fun. The context always changes so it still is helpful for learning. New videos of any type help to keep me on track and excited to work on these projects. One example I was thinking of, I've used the tutorial on making a street. It's super great! The application style seems to work really good for a very specific scene, lower light, shiny, wet and/or worn texture. But a daylight sunny road with patches of new and old is a bit of a different workflow. Just an example of something you could come back to with a different angle and it would help to reinforce the technical process but address design and stylistic changes necessary to make the technical process fit another setting.

Pete Burges

Sorry to hear you've had a rough time of late, Ian. Such is life's ocean of peaks and troughs, and this too shall pass, as they say. But on the plus side, you are working crazy hours on something you're truly passionate about- which is a good place to be at times like this. Before you know it, pages will have fallen off the calendar, and all the crap will be a barely discernable shadow in the rear view mirror.

sanki

I think that switching to "case studies" might be a good thing in between technique tutorials. So taking a scene, here is a breakdown, here is what we did, here are the challenges we faced while filming/post-processing. And this will also help you to deconstruct your process and point out things that work and those needing improvements. Good luck on the boat

George Moise

Dude! So sorry you’ve had a hard time, man. We all love you. Also, I know you may not like to repeat yourself, but I want you to! Well I want to see you do as a model and texture things. I fucking love it. Really anything. Setting up a scene. But modeling and texturing is my favorite. I could literally watch you do that all day long all the time, forever.

Lukas Sprehn

Sorry to hear about the separation :( Love is difficult. I hope the shoot goes super well, that you find love again, and that you get your vision out there as you always dreamed of!

SwaMusic

dang, you reminded me in your video! my bday is next month, happy belated! :)

Stephane Mélo

Yeah, I second that. Personally, I support out of love, not as a client, and I'm sure we're a majority. I also second the Smiths bit. I personally listen to the Polyphonic Spree through hard times, ha ha.

Adam Glenn

Sorry you're having a hard time Ian. If you ever want a real person instead of a fake person I'd be happy to talk :)

Wolfers

I LOVE your tangents. You could ramble for days about something you love and i'd enjoy it.

Siavash Robb

hey ian, don't worry you can post things you have already talked about I will watch

Kyle Manning

Hi Ian giving a shout-out from Japan. This is my first time responding to one of your videos, although I really enjoy watching you and get a lot of inspiration from you. Today, though, I really appreciate your candidness and transparency. I believe that the larger a hill is to climb, the greater the reward on the other side.

Al

Hi Ian, I really appreciate you sharing your struggle, and how you are dealing with all these issues in your personal life. RIP cat :_(. I agree with other people's comments. I personally don't need to always see novel concepts, I learn something every time I see you doing mundane stuff like modeling a prop.

Willem van der Veere - Studio Friday

Hi Ian, thanks for sharing your story, hope you will recover from Caith’s separation soon. Missed you already at Bcon22 ;-) BTW, great video. It is good to have a vid on (the search for) concepts between all the how-to-recept-vid’s. And, until today, you have produced more patreon stuff then I am capabel to digest anyway. Take it easy, focus on your production and share your experiences.

Clint Shelton

Damn, don't cross the loss streams!!! Sorry for you losses Ian. Thanks again for sharing all that you know with us. We're all excited for what's in store!

Paul Richmond

I'm sorry for your losses, Ian; and I wish you the best on these coming endeavours. Godspeed.

Bernhard VonZastrow

Oh man. Never apologize for the hard times in your life. It’s weird. I don’t really know you at all, but in an odd way I’ve got that “I see you talking in front of me so we must be friends” thing that happens in the digital realm. So as a complete stranger/Digital friend… take care of yourself and express yourself however you need to. You don’t have to tell anyone anything ever, but don’t feel like you can’t either. I imagine that most people here are here for reasons beyond the simple shared interest in blender and filmmaking. We care about you Digital friend.

Alistair Benckenstein

Much love to you Ian, the parasocial empathy is strong today. I had a similar summer with two deaths very close to me, both within a month of each other - I very much can empathize with the weird cloud of bad stuff happening all at once - its a very strange feeling. That being said I'm glad you have all this creative work coming up! Always excited to see whatever you have to share, and I get wanting to only post new things but we've all learned our craft through doing the same things in different contexts and adapting what we learn to each new instance, so I think for people here its always interesting and enlightening. Take care of yourself man!

2026-09-20 10:00 Mate. <3 I'm old, I've had so many lives come and go in my long long life. That sense of sadness but excitement is a good sign. It means things are happening the way they should. Change is good, but it sucks emotionally and mentally if you're doing it right. People think that being in the right place and the right time doing the right things is all gravy, it should feel like the best time. In my considerable experience that's not true. Change for the better is painful, education and growth are painful. But there's no mistaking that feeling of everything falling into place so perfectly but taking half your head with it. Enjoy the shoot, enjoy your new chapter and may many glorious things come from it. Take care.

Good luck for the shoot, and just remember for everything that goes wrong, thats one more interesting anecdote you can laugh about later. All my favourite moments on set are the moments when everything goes tits up. Frustrating at the time, but an excellent story in hind sight, Your gonna do great! Give my love to nathan, I was sad I Only managed a quick hello with him this bcon, as I had to fly home early.

Joel Godin

Glad to see you braking out from your comfort zone. You know what they say, "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you're always gotten." cheers

Just watched the video. Sorry for your losses Ian. Close or far, the effect is very real. Sounds like you're keeping busy which can help, but don't overdo it, especially on our account, we're here for you and your particular brand of creativity. Stay well.

Dave Makes a Movie

Just catching up (I save your posts to watch/listen to whilst working), I'm so sorry to hear about your relationship and cat double whammy. How sad. Glad you're staying positive.
