Historical percussion (cap and ball) revolvers are a lot of fun. They're relatively inexpensive, historical and a real blast to shoot. That said, there's a lot of lore and misinformation out there and it can be frustrating at first if you don't know what you're doing. This video is my guide on what I do to use these revolvers reliably and hopefully it'll help you get started in enjoying these awesome firearms too.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and your personal experience!

Percussssion revolvers are a joy. I think the 1860 and 1861s are the most beautiful revolvers ever made and always winced at their slagging by 1858 owners. Thaank you for your suggestions regarding lubricating the arbor. This will change my practice immediately. Finally, when I walked to the range, I always come with several loaded cylinders. Do you do the same?

michael greif

One more question, do you do anything regarding the sights?

Emily

I do really like these "101" videos, whether they be for modern stuff or - like this one - historical shooting. I myself am not in a position to ever own a gun, but seeing you put the time and effort in to help people who are just getting into it puts a smile on my face. Helping n00bs out, regardless of the field, is very important, and a thing I think many people neglect, either because they don't think about it or out of a misguided "I never had anyone explain this to me when I [etc., etc.]!". You do good work, Karl.

hope duelist 54 gets rid of his issues and bring some videos again. always liked and trusted mike on the topic. liked his earlier milsurp handguns, too. --- hope to get an old army soon. though I wait on an approval just to buy bp yet... what sucks. germany. bs we have to deal with here... . cartridge I ended with sauer & sons. grip is kind of too small for me. much more expensive but rem 1875s would fit my hand better. maybe. got to slow down to not shortstroke the hammer.

did you ever shot a match "against" jed(itv)? as you both go for frontiersman. arguably a very period correct true old west way to approach the game.

This was a terrific video . I am seriously considering jumping through the many hoops required to buy a black powder handgun . The information given here was of great value to me . Thanks Karl 👍🏼

Great video :) I've got an original Remington NMA but i really want a .36 colt aswell.. The NMA has been rethreaded* to accept pietta nipples so i think i'm going to get a set of those slickshots.

Karl, have you ever made/used paper cartridges? It seems like it would be both historically interesting and also potentially easier to deal with at the range.

Cap and ball is a lot of fun! And way cheaper to shoot too.

Jonathan Young

Loved this! I've never even thought about black powder pistols but this looks like fun.

InRange TV

Yeah, they work, but they take so much time to make that it's easier just to load with loose powder and ball at the range.
