Ok, Ian's schedule is absurd but we will be riding in the back of a fellow shooter's car all the way up to St. George Utah for the upcoming Red Oktober AK match...and we're going to experiment with doing the Q&A from there.

I've tested the audio gear and it actually seems to work well, and this is really our only chance to get both of us in the Q&A at the same time for this month...so let's give this a whirl.

Please reply to this thread with your proposed question.   Please only post one question and post it as a single sentence, not a paragraph, if possible (within reason).

We get so many questions that we can't get through them all and so I apologize for not getting to all of them, but having single sentence questions, one per person helps.

Thanks!

Karl

In your Suomi video you remark about how controllable the gun is despite the high RoF. Could that be similar to what you guys found in Jim Sullivan's modified AR15 and did the Finns design it that way or stumble across it?

Are there any plans for any gunsmithing videos, like the few Ian did with his old "Gun Lab" project, in the future?

Karl, you have mentioned the last Red-October match that you have hunted or do hunt. Are both you and Ian hunters? If so what kind of hunting? And do you approach hunting the same way that you do the rest of your firearms interests? What rifle, equipment, species etc etc.

Brendon Burns

i cant help but picture Ian with some sporterized Martini-enfield or French rifle and Karl with an HK SL7 after desert mule deer

Ian, Karl! Interested in both your opinions as to what you would be giving up if you were forced to go with a 16” barrel on your respective WWSD? guns. Would a shorter/longer barrel make you reconsider your choice of optic?

After WW2 the anti tank rifle seemed to be a technological dead end only to be revived by the rifles like the M82 or KSVK as anti materiel rifles. Are there any other technological dead ends that you see possibly being revived, or what concepts commonly in use today do you see as potential dead ends in near future?

I am just starting into competition and was curious, do you guys know of any good phone apps to use for a shot timer? All the actual timers I've looked at seem to be pretty expensive especially since most of my money goes to the kids and ammo.

Mitch

I just watched your video about the JP captured buffer system and was curious if you guys had tried any other improved buffer systems? For example, the Vltor A5.

Karl and Ian, I realize Tiger Valley will be the final "proof of concept" for the WWSD rifles, but given how well they've performed thus far, have they more or less supplanted the other ARs (or AKs, FALs etc..) you own as your primary "go to" semi-automatic rifles?

Joseph W Roberts

Do you have any preference between first focal plane or second focal plane optics? Coming from nothing but Aimpoints and iron sights I know little...thanks for your input and kickass content!

Do you see our military getting away from the 62gr 556 anytime soon. I know that the SEALs and other special forces like the 77gr stuff. Do you see the 77gr being issued across the board or do you think they will be switching to a different caliber all together next ie 6.8/6.5 or back to the 308

Why have bottleneck pistol calibers never gained popularity in the US

I believe you’ve commented that either you’ve got some more historical videos planned. I know your well positioned in the Western US and 5he wealth of history located their; but do you have any (presumably) long range plans to come to the east coast to make some historical videos with your perspective?

Why does it seem ammo makers/bullet designers strive to perform well in gel,12-18 inches, yet we're told gel doesn't accurately portray the human body? Also, what about the solid copper offerings such as Extreme Defender and Penetrator, aren't they basically FMJs? Thanks.

What is the history of the serial number? When were they first used and why and Were they ever used on other weapons like crossbows?

What are your thoughts about an integrated gas key on a stoner type bolt carrier? It seems to me that it would reduce the overall amount of parts by 3, and I cannot think of a downside.

WWSD: Faxon is now offering a "match" line of barrels with .223 Wylde chambering (and NP3 extensions, 5R rifling, etc.) Given the option of .223 Wylde or 5.56, what would Stoner do?

Brandon

With the recent WWSD builds, you have shown a few interesting "nice-to-have but unessential" improvements/developments for the AR platform: the KE trigger/any-time-safety combo and the JP captured buffer, for instance. Are there any others you saw that *didn't* make it into the WWSD rifles (whether you tested them or not), but that you still found interesting and possibly worthwhile in a differently intentioned AR build?

Affectionate Nouns

Why do most modern 5.56 combat rifles tend to be AR-18 derivatives (e.g. G36, SCAR, etc) when the nation decides to not just use an AR-15? Is there something about it being piston driven that is fundamentally more attractive to the people in charge or is there something else driving that trend?

Brandon

I'm running Android and found a freebie called "IPSC Shot Timer" on the Play Store; if you use it correctly it can even pick up dry-fired "shots" just fine, so if your phone can run it I recommend at least giving it a try.

If either of you could only take a single practical firearms class both for rifle and pistol (one for each) which one would it be and taught by who? Thanks in advance.

Is it considered discourteous to participate in a 2GACM in the heavy class or any other class while using a compensator? (because of the extra noise) I have atteneded matches where some people get bent out of shape about how loud someone elses rifle is.

Why is red the most common color of choice for red dot sight reticles, when green reticles exist and there is also scientific evidence that the human eye has a greater sensitivity to green than red? Would Stoner use a green reticle or a red reticle? Thanks guys!

Cade Rarick

Have either of you noticed a POI shift when running a suppressor on a pencil barrel? If so do you believe this was due to the added weight on the thinner barrel or because of the suppressor's influence on the bullet path?

Which historic firearm decision, such as NATO initially standardizing on a .30 cal cartridge, would have resulted in the most interesting outcome if it had gone in the other direction?

What are the actual differences between red-dot, holographic, reflex and prismatic sights from both a technical and practical standpoint? These appear at a glance to be different names for essentially the same thing to the uninitiated and I'd appreciate your insight.

With the current situation involving terror attacks do you think the idea of a pdw in heavier calibers than 5.7 will make a meaningful comeback?

What are your opinions on pistol lanyards? I know some people who love them, some who hate them, and most people don't even think about them at all. What are the history of pistol lanyards, and why are they not popular?

Jevidar Ba'cho

Your thoughts on the lack of evolution/improvement in small arms ammunition and consequently firearms. What developing technologies represent true possible advancements. Considering these are there any revolutionary advancements on the horizon? Lasers, in-flight guidance..

What do you think about collecting vintage or surplus guns that are no longer viable to shoot, whether by cartridge availability or safety. Do you see them as less fulfilling to collect and why or why not?

Pokeroots

As someone who doesn't own any firearms but would like to get into competitions like the 2Gun ACM but would also like to collect C&R guns where would you suggest starting.

Joey

Thanks for doing these, despite your busy schedules. I really enjoy them.

About two years ago uploaded a video interviewing Jim Sullivan that included a demonstration of his modified (ArmWest) AR-15 design. Do you know what happened to his program since then and will you revisit his work as a compliment to the WWSD (WWSullivanD) project?

if money and government was no problem what do you think Stoner would have done to the M16A1. Are you open to another series like WWSD but with a different designer?

I'm a sous chef, and I'm curious to know if you guys like to cook? If not or so, what are your favorite things to make and/or consume?

Jim Russell

What happened to Karl teaching Ian to shoot long range with that Ruger RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor? I recently purchased a Savage FCP-SR in 6.5 Creedmoor and would be interested in hearing some long range tips from y'all. You podcasts are great, but I think my wife and daughters are tired of hearing about barrel profiles and chamber cuts when they ride in my truck.

Which crypto currency should we all use?

xthetenth

With the WWSD project, you seem to be using high end products to make as future looking a rifle as possible. Will you also be recommending things that are close to as good when you finally figure out what the rifles really should be for people trying to make something similar but less expensive?

C.j. Singleton

what are you thoughts on the winchester 1907 351 self loader? I always though these rifles had a great deal of potential as the perfect police rifle during the time they were available why do you think they faded into obscurity when they were so popular with police?

Ryan Wilson

Will you be touching on the muzzle device for the WWSD, or will you just keep the birdcage?

Caliber question!: ammo availability and firing platforms aside, which would, in you opinion, be the perfect caliber (or kind of caliber) for a standard infantry weapon in the modern battlefield? Do optics and longer detection capabilities (drones, thermal sights), as well as body armor, make calibers bigger than 5.56 more suitable? How much bigger can you go without losing all kind of automatic fire controllability? And is automatic fire useful at all in modern combat encounters? I know caliber and ballistic discussions sometimes fall in the realm of magic and esoteric, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Joseph Roberts

On the WWSD door kicker rifle, why 5.56 and not 300 BLK? I do suppose 300 is not financially sound in a match enviroment.

Daniel Tighe

Hello InRange crew! You both have discussed building firearms out of parts kits in the past (AR15’s, AK’s, CETME-L’s, and IIRC Ian even has a machine gun kit kicking around). For those looking to build their own firearms from parts kits the AR15 seems to be the clear choice for a beginner so what would you recommend as an intermediate level build for those interesting in more advanced builds and what are your favorite firearms you’ve built in the past or what would you like to build in the future? Keep up the good work!

Patriot

Karl, If Ian is Gun Jesus, what are you?

Bakuto

What are your opinions on alternate calibers for the AR-15 (and AR-10), such as say, .300blk, 6.5, or .458 as a replacement for 5.56. Do you think that 5.56/.223 is the ideal caliber for the AR-15, and if not do you think that the AR15/M16/M4 is the platform that should be used for the new round as opposed to say, an AR-10 or something akin to an FN SCAR. In other words, should the military/consumer just swap uppers or replace everything if they plan to go to a larger round.

Sean Gallagher

what is total cost to build wwsd rifle?

Spot Spotterson

Do you think that "specialty" ammo like .357 SIG and .45 GAP will become more commonplace in the US; why or why not?
