Not quite the same as the human-made substances category, but Ariel from the Fallen Angels series sort of fits? She created portals out of existing doorways, and doorways are not naturally occurring objects. That’s slightly different than the others you discussed but she’s an interesting one. Plus there’s characters like Hijack and Box who can control/talk to machines. It makes me wonder whether those characters would realize they were mutants if they lived in a different time period

"Organic" is one of those words with a few different definitions, so it's not always easy to say "this phrase uses organic wrong". First, organic in the sense of "organic chemistry" doesn't just mean it contains carbon (though it's often short-handed that way). Technically, an organic compound is one that contains a carbon-carbon molecular bond. Steel can't be considered organic, because while it has carbon in it, the carbon is melded into the metallic crystal structure rather than bonded to other carbon atoms. The second meaning is materials associated with living things, which is where the word "organic" comes from -- stuff that came from an organ. The third meaning is the sort of hand-wavey "organic food" thing where it refers to producing a product without resorting to "unnatural" chemicals, whatever that means (it's not a simple definition). So yeah, "organic steel" is an incoherent term if you're just thinking about organic chemistry, but used in the sense of "steel produced by a living thing", it's actually not inaccurate for Colossus.

Good points! And that makes me wonder whether those folks' powers are indeed specific to doors and machines respectively, or if in a different time period, they'd generalize to something else... How would Ariel do with Krakoan flower portals? How would Box work in an era of steam tech? -M
