Art & Process: Suit Up, Alex! (OCs) (Patreon)

At the same time when I started working on my butch Rhys, I also started working on Alex (who also just got a slight rename from Lex -> Alex - her full name is still Alexandra). I never finished her but after the success with the last piece, I wanted to complete this piece as well.

Luckily since I left her in an earlier art stage, it was much easier to find a style and color palette I liked with her.

Process

Similarly to Rhys I wanted to paint directly in one go without a linework stage. I started off with a very rough concept. I don't have the reference anymore unfortunately, but it was an ad in a fashion magazine I saw. I think it was Billy Eilish in an oversized suit or something.

Put this as a multiply layer on top and put some base colors below. Rhys corresponds to warm colors, while Alex wears cooler tones.

Onto the base colors, I added some shadows and colors:

Unfortunately that's the last WIP I saved. But the basic gist was: add more details to the base colors, then lower the opacity of the linework, and finally just complete the full render of everything on another layer on top. So the layer setup was:

Which gives the final piece in the end. I gotta say I love the final piece. I think it looks really good and it's something I'm quite proud of. Maybe I'm gonna do some more rendered piece in the future after all hehe.
