#4 in the Barcelona to Berlin 2016 throwback series.   We're up in the far northern reaches of Italy now, and the aim is to cross over into Switzerland and reach the village of Andeer by nightfall, using a mixture of hiking and hitchhiking. To make things slightly trickier though, I could only eat and drink things that flowed, grew or lived in the land. But the day ended up being so much more than about the crippling hunger. There were petrifying paths, a close shave with a marmot, three of the fastest hitchhikes I've ever gotten, including a near death experience (but surprisingly not with the drunken old man who drove me to Splugen) and a pretty scary night's sleep to cap it off. But would I succeed in my mission? Watch to find out.

I attempted to live off the land for an entire day. The land was not kind.

I'm German and I don't even understand what the drunk German guy is saying

geowizard

Mate I couldn't catch a word.. That must be some seriously strong Swiss dialect..

geowizard

Not sure this has fully processed - only loading in 720p at the moment. Maybe give it an hour :|

2026-09-19 22:00 Hahaha flip me: "You know you're getting hungry when you're considering dropping a boulder on a cow's head--just to eat it's raw flesh."

You missed a banging restaurant on the Italian side of the Splugen pass. If you ever go back, it's €5 for an incredible pizza at the place right on the edge of the lake. I also had to sit and wait for a bus for 4 hours in Andeer, which was probably the most boring experience of my life to date.

Joseph Landry-McWilliams

This is bril mate! Did you record this entire trip from start to finish? Excited for more from this series.

jabbawabs

All of those hitchhikes are probably records for shortest wait times, yeah?

Patrik Schmidt

You dropping your hat seems to be a regular occurrence

Domain of Science

I think the 'Immer richtig fahrt' bit of it was 'always correctly drive' or 'always drive straight'. Not sure if he was trying to convince you or himself though.

Kristin Walter

This stuff is so amazing to watch, loved every second of it! 🙏🏼

Mindez

Let's all have a moment of silence for the brave hats that have surrendered their lives in the line of duty for the sake of entertainment.

Sam Wiström

Spluga pass I take it? Depending when in the summer this was I might have missed you by a day when driving through it.

geowizard

I'm glad you think so Kelsey :)

geowizard

Ah yeah that makes sense. That's hilarious. He suspects I know he's pissed so he tries to convince me it doesn't matter. To be fair I can't fault his driving in the end. Got me down the mountain in one piece!

geowizard

Haha I wasn't a million miles away. Man that cliff was pure death. 12 seconds more like!

geowizard

Mate I was so tempted. Took all my will power to not go in and order a Pizza. No way man, what trip were you doing at the time?

geowizard

I did mate, although because I wasn't as serious and confident about making a youtube series out of it, and was hungover a lot, there are some flat sections with inconsistent levels of entertainment. But I should be able to get 2 or 3 more stories like this out of it all!

geowizard

I mean the Triumph couldn't have been faster. It was the first car that came past whilst I was on that road and it stopped! The other two were insanely quick too.. I'm going to make a compilation of my top 5 fastest hitchhikes ever soon!

geowizard

I'll give you that one mr smith!

geowizard

Thanks Kristin! comments like this make me feel all warm inside :)

geowizard

haha I actually went back for that one! I probably did lose it later on in this trip though. I sure as hell don't have it now.

geowizard

Yeah man! I'd say this was roughly the 16th of august 2016! (give or take 5 days)

geowizard

Guys: I am re-uploading this in the hopes that it changes to 1080p this time. It will be back online at about 10am BST

Sam Wiström

Oh well then I was a few weeks too early. It's really beautiful once you're descending down into Switzerland isn't it, drunken swiss driving or not. Don't know if we would have picked you up though, your air of assassinating and eating raw marmot is sort of poignant..

Though I've never done a journey quite like this one, when traveling around Europe, I find as much, if not more, entertaining things *outside* of the cities and towns than inside them. The stuff in the towns you've mostly already seen pictures on travel sites, guides, etc. But the real *journey* is in the small little places that are not in the guidebooks and often don't even have names! The towns and cities are great, but the *stories* come from the unique experiences you have, not from postcard-like photos that everyone has seen. Please keep sharing these!

Haha that sounds fucking class. Can't wait to tackle a mad hill on my bike again.

I think the real mr Grylls would have something to say..
