Hey guys! This is Part Two of the tutorial. In this section we will also look at using the Custom AOVs to generate specialized AOVs like a Vray space Normal AOV, a Clown Pass, Global Ambient Occlusion and more. Finally, we will wrap up the tutorial covering DEEP AOVs, and how to use them in Nuke and discuss the benefits of DEEP AOV data. This is a long tutorial but details all the current AOVs found in Redshift and how to use them for your compositing pipelines.

Hopefully, after this tutorial, everyone will know how to take advantage of the AOVs and increase the quality of their shots. As usual, the files will be included with the tutorial, the files are in the original Part 1 post. If you need to find part one please use the tutorials section on the left of my main Patreon page or follow this link - https://www.patreon.com/posts/26455627

Thanks again everyone for all the support!

Hey Saul, Not able to access your videos. Says the privacy settings cant play

Gary Crane

Sorry Because of its privacy settings, this video cannot be played here.

Saul Espinosa

So your saying Vimeo itself isn’t playing? It is playing on my end and I double checked the video settings on Vimeo and indeed it is ok and white listed for Patreon like all my other tutorials. Might have been a Vimeo bug when you first checked it can you try again?

Gary Crane

It’s working now. All the videos were not last night. Good now tho. Thanks

Saul Espinosa

Ok good, must have just been a Vimeo bug on their website. Glad it’s working again. Enjoy!

Hey Saul! Awesome tutorial. Do you know how to get a z depth pass for clouds?

Saul Espinosa

Hey Steven, technically you can't get a "real" or accurate zdepth pass of a volumetric object as it isn't solid. So it doesn't actually make sense. This is why people use DEEP Volume AOVs. Unfortunately Redshift doesn't support them just yet but they are developing them currently. Now if accuracy doesn't matter so much you can make a fake one using a cheap trick. https://www.provideocoalition.com/turbulencefd-depth-pass-using-cinema-4d/ So it's basically a light parented to your camera and the volume shader is black or gray the light is pure white and you adjust the lights distance falloff. This will give you a pure black and white gradient to fake a zdepth. The reality is you can't make a real zdepth for volumetric a though because zdepth requires a pixel beginning and end point, volumes are sparse voxel data, so where do you consider the start/end of a volume? The trick above atleast let's you fake it and control it somewhat for your needs.

Great tutorial i love it. Can you make a tutorial explaining how to use per light AOVs. I know you explained but I wish u could do one more in deth. Cheers!! =) Can you give the car scene to us? So I can understand how to separete the lights... =)

Thanks Saul - quick question about setting a template for AOVs. I'm used to C4D where I set the AOVs and save the file, each time I open a new file, the preset AOVs that I have in the saved C4D file are there. Not sure how I do this in Houdini as its a chore to repeat AOVs settings again and again for each new project. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! PS: I just started using Houdini a month ago and getting the hang of it, not easy but offers good stuffs and no need for 3rd party plugins apart from rendering plugins.

Jonathan

Thanks Saul, I just spent the morning writing Phyton 456 script to set up AOVs running as template by default. Got it all working now, yohooo! There are limitations to built-in Houdini presets.

Jonathan

What I don't like about Houdini is that there are too many screws to turn to get something simple working but it is the screws and nuts that allow flexibility and it doesnt crash as much as MAYA! Had moved away from Maya to C4D and giving Houdini a go now.

Hey Saul, Great tutorial learnt loads and feeling more comfortable with Redshift AOVs. Quick question what does the background AOV do? I want render out my foreground and background separately and was wondering what would be a good solution? Would it be 2 rops one with foreground excluding background and the second rop with background excluding foreground. Or does the background AOV do something similar? Many Thanks
