Constantine (2005) - WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

Simply Faded

Great movie! There are definitely moments that were very 2005, but I still found it enjoyable!

I love this movie, one of my fave Keanu roles. The little filmmaking touches, like Constantine’s skin colour changing from grey to healthy when Lucifer takes the cancer from his lungs. Aside from Keanu and Rachel, it’s all star, S-tier casting - Djimon, Tilda, Shia, Pruitt, baby Michelle Monaghan as a demon ‘extra’ and Peter Stomare absolutely shines as Lucifer. In case my YouTube comment gets missed, Gavin Rossdale (front man from Bush who Aaron thought was Jude Law) absolutely blows me away as Balthazar. Who knew he could act, even just a little?

Aaron is always almost falling asleep whenever theres no action. Give my guy a bed and some coco so he can rest.

Hearing you guys having the discussion of how the Constantine character is being incorporated more in recent years into the broader DC universe made me realize something kinda shocking. Assuming that this movie winds up being absorbed as canon, the monologue from Gabriel near the end of the movie raises some concerns: (S)he states that (paraphrasing), all humans need to do to enter Heaven is to genuinely repent of their sins, and they will be taken into God’s bosom. NO OTHER CREATURE on ANY OTHER WORLD (emphasis mine) can make that claim. Only mankind. So this leaves one of two options, neither of them good. Either: A) Superman is destined to go to hell when he dies, to be tormented for all eternity by Satan and his demons. Or, B) Superman has no soul. What could possibly be more terrifying for our world than a nihilistic, take-no-shits give-no-fucks ultra-powerful goth god with absolutely NOTHING to lose, once he finds out where he’s likely going at the end of his life? That would probably be a very short-lived series, if DC were to play it out to its logical conclusion…

Great watchalong John & Aaron!! I love CONSTANTINE: great opening, great atmosphere, good mix of Demon Noir, action & FX, and L.A. production designs/costumes. Also, you see some John Wick in this film - rules, world within' our world... I NEED THE SEQUEL KEANU!! COME ON CONSTANTINE TWOOOOOOOO!! Bring back Shai-Chaz! And MORE Tilda GABRIEL, Djimon MIDNIGHT & GAVIN "MACHINEHEAD" ROSSDALE fingerlickin' good" lol :) *Michelle Monaghan & Shia did collab in the surveillance techo-thriller "Eagle Eye"... *also the Counter Diner John & Angela eat at after he portals to hell was on Vine south of Hollywood by the Ricardo Montalban Theater, it became the WeWork building across from the Trader Joe's & Wells Fargo/W Hotel block. *also also - my fave Bowling Alley/Bar/Arcade in L.A. "Shatto Lanes 39" in K-Town was the one used for John's apt and Beeman's workspace, but I think they use some different exteriors from Downtown L.A. and Hollywood proper in some scenes.
