I was the kid that loved this movie 😂😂😂😂 My mom and I would watch together. One of many classics she introduced me to. It will always hold a special place in my heart ❤️🥰

This movie reminds me of my Granny. She would watch it all the time when I was little. I bought the movie with one of my first real paychecks as a young person and then bought it again on Amazon so I could download it to my tablet because I travel quite a bit. I found out later that she loved the movie so much because we're of Sioux descent on my father's side.

I love this film. If you want to see another project from Kevin Costner that he directed, I highly recommend Open Range. One of the most underrated films that has come out in the last 25 years. Also, has one of the best shootouts that has ever been filmed.

Since you have not seen Yellowstone, I highly recommend it, but watch the whole Yellowstone franchise chronologically though with their prequel series. The order to watch it in is: 1883, 1923 S1, 1923 S2, and Yellowstone S 1-5 (Currently 2 spin-offs coming soon Y: Marshalls and The Dutton Ranch. Both take place after Yellowstone television series and continue the Yellowstone story forward.)

While on this topic I think "Thunderheart" with Val Kilmer is also a great movie to add to your watch docket 😉❤️

I saw this in the theater and I've seen it many times since. One thing about Costner films is he knows how to use scenery to help tell the story. He's incredible. And he wasn't really an action star prior more of a dramatic/crime type actor. I mean he did do Silverado which was a bit actiony western but he was also really funny in it. But, i still think as for cinematography goes this, his film Open Range and his film Horizon doesn't get much better than those two. As for him leaving Yellowstone he didn't have much of a choice. He has his own production company and as you know that's jobs and with Yellowstone Sheridan kept pushing the Yellowstone schedule back further and further due to all his other projects and Kevin had Horizon waiting and waiting and it got to the point where he had to leave cause so much money was already invested in his company to make Horizon. As for his narration you gotta remember he's narrating from his journal so he is just reading it aloud. As for the buffalo they used the largest privately owned buffalo ranch located in S. Dakota. Approx 3500 buffalo on the ranch at the time. It took 8 days to film the hunting scene. Costner talked about it in interviews how difficult and dangerous it was due to the buffalo's unpredictability. The buffalo that fall when getting shot are actually "dummies" made of fur and wire. As for the Sioux they are most known for beating Custer at the battle of Bighorn and for a couple leaders Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Sioux and Pawnee were enemies for real. As for the water bags, those were made from Buffalo bladders. Another reason why the poached buffalo scene was important because White people leave everything other than the hide and tongue to waste where as natives used as much as the buffalo as possible. Nothing to waste. As for the Oscars. This film got 12 nominations and won 7. Including Best sound, Best score, best editing, best cinematography, Best screen play, Best director and best picture. Costner, Graham Green (Kicking Bird) and Marry McDonnell were all nominated.
