As a queer woman, this show is so special to me. Showing how representation matters, even in a fictional universe, and Scott coming out means so much to two younger queer men who are afraid to be together.

Rachel

I clicked so fast

Ren Summers

You guys are so awesome! I love your reactions. Always so much heart! Thank you!

Isabella

Upgraded on patreon just to get these reactions! I am so excited to watch with you!

And yes the books are just as amazing and nuanced - there are a lot of authors in the romance genre that are just as good as crafting a story as the “normal literature” shelves. Rachel Reid is one of them. I will say though that I feel as though the books and the shows have been made in such a way where they both compliment each other and also exist well by themselves. I think because Jacob was a huge fan of the books before he even decided to make the show and you can tell how much he respected them in the way he adapted it. (Btw not sure if you guys heard but they already just greenlit 3 seasons so….multiple books yay)

zenscience

It just keeps getting better!

As someone who read both books on ilya and shane, although I enjoyed them and obviously need to pay dues to rachel reid since this story wouldn't exist without her, imo the show is much more nuanced and contains a depth of emotion that I didn't necessarily find in the books. For example, shane being asian in a predominantly white sport is explored more in just a few episodes than in both books combined. Also I think jacob tierny has a really good sense of what dialogue to keep from the book and what to change, and in the book you don't hear ilya's russian monologue since it's in shane's perspective so you only find out what he says about being so in love with shane and not knowing what to do about it. Hearing the entire monologue was such an incredible addition, one of my favourite moments of the show so far. Obviously watching vs. reading are such different experiences but this adaptation has just been so impressive and I think it's one of the rare instances where the film/tv adaptation surpasses the quality of the original text. edit: i think this also has to do with the INSANE chemistry that hudson and connor have, like they truly hit the jackpot finding them for these roles

Lucilita

see you all at the cottage 😭

The Huddy Tommo Way

I joined the Patreon for that and I dont regret it at all

What I love about this is that it’s a fast paced physical relationship and a slow burn emotional relationship. On top of that I feel like the sex scenes aren’t just there for no reason. I feel like showing those sex scenes really helps the audience understand their dynamic at the beginning and showing how intimate they are but how far they are emotionally. It takes us along and makes us understand their dynamic better. On top of that, Once we start to see them open up and connect emotionally it makes it more satisfying bc we got to see that character development of them starting off just having sex to actually communicating on a deeper level. Also it’s the same in the book. They haven’t really changed anything from the book which is great. I feel like their is a misconception that ppl think that just bc their are sex scenes in a romance story either in a book or in a movie ppl automatically think that their is no story or character development. Like you guys mentioned I feel ppl just aren’t used to seeing gay sex scenes bc if this was a straight couple I don’t think it would be such a big deal. Bridgerton has a bunch of sex scene and I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I think ppl need to understand that having sex scenes in a romance show or book doesn’t automatically mean their isn’t an interesting plot to it or that their is no character development. There can be sex scenes and character development at the same time in a story but some ppl just can’t understand that when it comes to romance. Game of thrones has a bunch of nudity and sex scenes and still had an interesting plot.

Talia

I obviously don't want to make assumptions but you have no idea what its like to see two guys just watch this and get emotions and genuinely love the story. When i was growing up we never had heart warming stories like these so to have queer media like this and to have guys like you reacting its beautiful!

LGA

The tears came hard and fast in this one. No pun intended.

So many miss out on the impact of Ilya not being able to go back to Russia. Yes he hates it there, but that’s also where his mothers grave is. When he tells Shane he could never go back, it’s lost if you aren’t a book reader on what a big sacrifice that is for him. She committed suicide and he found her body. She was the only person who ever told him I love you before Shane. The loss of Russia is another loss of his mother.

Loved the reaction! ❤️ I've been watching you guys for years and not in a million years would have guessed you would react to this show but I greatly appreciate it! I love how people who don't know the books start watching with the kind of "smutty glasses" but leave with tears in their eyes 😁.... now as a bonus I would love for you to react to some of the interviews with Hudson Williams (Shane) and Connor Storie (Ilya), especialy Heated Rivalry Thirst Tweets on Buzzfeed and 'Heated Rivalry' Cast Compete in a Compliment Battle for Teen Vogue ... the guys are hilarious and could not be further from their characters ... you just have to witness the absolute unhinged chaos king that is Hudson Williams 😁

Maria Stoycheva

thank you for crying ^^ I'm not even kidding - thank you for being real with us, and representing all of us while watching this episode <3

Greg asking "What if there was a version where we never saw Scott and Kip's backstory" - well, Greg, this was my experience when reading the book. I read HR directly (without reading Skip's book first) and it was just that - oh, wow, there are other gay hockey players??? I had the same reaction that Hollanov had :D

Maria Stoycheva

to John's question: overall, the series is not just a VERY faithful adaptation of the book. it also has the EXACT same feel as the book. at the start, the book, just like the show, switches between making you horny and making you sad. towards the end, where we are now, it gets a bit more bittersweet. it is practically the same experience, and this is largely the reason that the fandom is so fucking excited and impressed, and we all bow to and thank Jacob Tierney ^^

Poopsiekittens

Girl, spoilers. I am pretty sure this will be revealed in Ep6 so maybe edit the comment?

Poopsiekittens

Get in, losers, we are going to the cottage! Thank you for being so amazing and taking us on this journey. You never expect the smut show to make you cry with happiness until your glasses fog up, huh? 🥰 Happy Christmas to you both!

I've always been a rom-com lover as a gay man, so that ending moment was one of my favorite moments ever, and even more impactful when it gets to be a gay couple that has that moment. Excited to see y'all react to episode 6 next week! The sex scenes in this show are very impactful for me, because they show a representation of a gay couple where all aspects of romance and relationship are included, and it doesn't shy away from the realities of how gay relationships work, and the struggles we often go through. It's also why I loved Red, White, and Royal Blue. There's like barely any actual gay rom-coms, specifically, so I love me a rom-com moment with gay couples. Anyways, loved the reaction, and really appreciate the commentary a lot.

Neeko

This episode made me cry so hard at the end. People joke about representation and yes, it's a fictional story but just the idea of seeing someone who is like you be free to be who they want to be and show you a world that you didn't think was possible, sobbinggggg.

Christian Seibold

Btw, yeah, gay romance books are often more nuanced in the situations and emotions, mostly because we cannot really get away from the realities of gay relationships in this day and age completely yet. So while it's a gay romance/smut, there's always going to be angst and problems with coming out, or repression, or self-hatred. It's authentic to the gay romance genre and authentic to gay relationships in real life. I recently read a gay smut book that had a lot of similar themes in it, called "His Sex Therapist" by Jamie Kassel (and also written by a woman, lol), so it's a common element in these books, and for me, it makes them very impactful, and almost healing, since I relate to those feelings, and the book shows me a way through those feelings, too. There is a certain irony in the stereotype of gay relationships being purely sexual, and yet many portrayals of gay people on TV either lack the sexual element, or they lack the romantic element. I think this show combines the two elements, sex and romance, very well, because the two are in reality interlinked together, not separate. Oh, and Happy Holidays to the entire team!

Christian Seibold

Love the bridgerton and GoT examples. I think also it comes down to not knowing the gay smut genre very well. All of the repression, angst, self-hatred, etc, is particularly common in the gay and LGBTQ+ smut/romance genre because of how it represents real-world experiences of LGBTQ+ people.

Clayton Bockman

LOVED this reaction so much guys. Thankyou so much ❤️❤️

Fernanda Sena

the way i RAN here from youtube because i needed the watch along for the second best episode of this series.. 6th episode is the best i cant wait for your reaction. ANYWAY your reactions were PERFECT. you understand ilya, shane and the whole series so much. it is so refreshing. thank you so much!!!

I just really enjoy all the aspects of art that you both notice. Whether it's acting ,directing, cinematography, camera work in general, lighting, dialogue. You notice all the technical aspects without losing your appreciation of the emotional connections. It's almost like you compartmentalize. You see all the talent and detail but you also stay empathetic to the human experience being depicted. That big picture but also the small nuances. It's a skill set and it's appreciated!

Please sell me a shirt that says, “Good for him. Good for Scott Hunter. Wow.”
