Comments

Lisa - Marie

Happy you reacted so fast to this - im in UK and isn't released until 2nd here but soon as is will watch reaction :)

Kyle Southworth

I literally just finished watching this! Guess I'll have to watch it again with you guys later! I definitely think the first movie was better but I still loved this one as well! When you watch both of them back to back (like I just did) it makes for one epic musical! Overall I dont think these movies could've been done much better. Between the cast, the sets, and just the whole production in general, I think they did a near perfect job! Can't wait to watch it all over again with you guys and hear what your thoughts were!

lissie

omgg y’all just made today the best day ever im so so so happy & excited to watch !! thank you SO much

chaos_witch

First of all, appreciate the reaction! Was fun watching with y'all. Yes, Wicked the book and musical are a rewrite of Wizard of Oz. It's revisionist fiction. Felt like y'all were being a little weird about it not agreeing with the Wizard of Oz movie, lol. It's not supposed to agree, and also I don't know why people care whether it agrees. Revisionist stories are their own stories that stand on their own, and Wizard of Oz isn't actually necessary to understand Wicked. Wicked is the more nuanced movie anyway. Wizard of Oz is not as good as people make it out to be. Wizard of Oz literally had a random girl that manslaughtered a "wicked" witch just because the "good" witch told her she was wicked without evidence, and did so without knowing the wicked witch, and then went to some "wonderful Wizard" that turned out to be a complete fake, lol. Btw, in the classic movie, the Wizard has no powers. If the Wizard has no powers, then what does that say about the Good Witch in the original movie that defended the Wizard? I feel like people have rose-colored glasses with the original movie. It was a moralizing kids book that brushed past Dorothy's manslaughter and never took itself too seriously because it wanted to be happy-go-lucky, and also never explained nor showed why the Wicked Witch was so bad. The only thing I will say is the pacing and placement of some scenes in Wicked For Good might be slightly weird because this is supposed to be one musical together, not split in two.

Mbet

I will say this that while I do agree that sometimes it is a little disruptive in it's storytelling, I do think the movie pretty clearly wants you to take this movie as a rewrite of the wizard of oz and to not think to hardly about it (thus why we never see Dorothy's face). I believe this is supposed to be Glinda's story in this movie and what happens to everyone is supposed to signify her journey and the cost she has to pay to finally be good. Because at the end of the movie Glinda has lost everything in a since (all her friends), but she became truly good ( thus finally giving her magic). At the end of the day Glinda choose a lonely life for the greater good which I believe is very powerful. That personally to me is very compelling. One last thing is yes, the 2nd act (from what I’ve heard) is just as controversial in the musical. However, I know they actually really padded it out more because in the musical this part is WAY shorter. So while I get why people dislike this part more than the first, I do personally still think it’s compelling and meaningful. The first one hits more for sure, but the message this one tries to tell is very beautiful in my opinion.

For those who love Wizard of Oz, imo it's best to view Wicked as more of an Alternate Universe, honestly.

KP

They have been singing live in both movies lol it’s been a year y’all should know this. It isn’t a prequel to the wizard of oz. It’s a book on its own. And a lot of the “wacky” jokes and humor are from the broadway play. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s a broadway play adaptation, not an original movie. Don’t hyper-focus on continuity. 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Kristen Ballard

Something that really helped me with this one, and I love wicked, is realizing this wasn’t a sequel. It was a part two. The climax was defying gravity, so this was the descend of the story. That made me appreciate part two so so much more

Lisa - Marie

so the plan was written on the piece of material chistery gave elpheba, which is what she was reading. other than that I think that if watch with mindset of victors write history it makes sense that wizard of oz (told by dorothy when returns home) it would make sense a child would exaggerate and make themselves the hero and not want to tell people she straight up murdered someone to get home

Christian Seibold

Well, and in the Frank Baum book series, Oz is not exactly the best place. The movie brushes over a lot of stuff. Even in the first book, Emerald City can be read as a critique of capitalism, and political authority, and thus the Wizard was a fake persona and a charlatan and everyone sees the city through green spectacles (which is pretty on the nose). The sequels get darker politically and with the threats too. The Wizard of Oz movie basically sanitized the hell out of the book, lmao. It's part of why I don't like the movie. But the book Wicked is a revision on the Wizard of Oz *book*, not the movie, so it takes on a lot of the political themes that are more clearly expressed in the book.

Lisa - Marie

this is true the books are darker in theme by a lot from what i remember been a while since i read them though. I think it is why have always liked wicked more than wizard of oz - along with how bad things were on set and behind the scenes for most of the cast

Lisa - Marie

oh also the reason the slippers are silver are for 2 reasons, 1. they are silver in the books (they were made red in wizard of oz so would pop more in technicolor) and 2. the red slippers are copyrighted

Christian Seibold

Agreed. I feel Wicked is more nuanced, because not only does it have some of the political themes of the original book, it also includes themes of racism, the animals stuff, and shows a much more complicated picture of how politics actually works, all of which are things the Baum books don't really do. It's not just this big old bad guy that casts an illusion on everyone - we have incorrect history being spread, we have people choosing sides, we have a person who was cast as wicked be not so wicked, we have relationships between people on different sides, some choose to fight the system from within while others fight it from outside, and both have their pros and cons, etc. It's just more nuanced, imo.

Lisa - Marie

I agree amd it doesn't try to 'dumb' things down for lack of better word either. From what I remember from books I felt like it was thought provoking and certain themes have stayed with me for long time and the film I kind of have to disassociate it from the books and just watch it as a fun children's movie to be watched around Christmas (don't know why as not really christmas related) but wicked I just enjoy and feel like the movie did better job than thought it would adapting the play mostly thanks to the main actors

Excuse My Brains

Haha you thought they cut stuff, but they added so much. I think the additions they put in kinda hurt things because it's the second half of a musical so very streamlined. In the musical, the stuff with Bok and Nessa are very secondary and there just to illustrate how every time Elphaba does something good, it goes to crap. (And had a cute tie in to the movie(and establish Nessa as having some powers).) By expanding it slightly, it raised expectations to make you think they're actual characters rather than props. So instead of adding the no place like home and bubble songs, they should have expanded Bok and Nessa, and let her grieve more. It's also not supposed to be 1:1 with the movie. It's a loose musical reimagining of a book that is a VERY loose and dark reimagining of an old movie based loosely off an old kids' book.

Christian Seibold

The musical is based on a book, but the book is actually based on the Wizard of Oz book, not the movie. That's why the Wicked book has more dark and political themes, because the Wizard of Oz book had more of that. This makes the Wicked movie even more removed from the Wizard of Oz movie in some sense, and actually closer to the Wizard of Oz books, lol. But the Wicked musical does borrow a some aesthetic and musical things from the Wizard of Oz movie. Some of the stuff they added to the Wicked For Good movie, afaik, actually comes directly from the Wicked book. What's funny is there's an older silent movie of the Wizard of Oz that is even looser in adaptation than the 1939 movie.

Christian Seibold

Here's a helpful diagram I made of how the adaptations all flow, mostly because y'all were speculating a lot about what the movie takes from where and whether it's a revisionist story or not. But this diagram obviously isn't necessary to understand Wicked *on its own terms*. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900, Baum, Book) | | ------------------------------ | | | | 1939 Wizard of Oz Wicked (1995, Maguire, Book) | | | | |··································> Wicked (2003, Broadway Musical) | | ------------------------------ | Wicked Film Musicals (2024-2025) Btw, Wicked is not the only "spin-off"/AU (Alternate Universe) book series. Tons of other authors have made their own spin-off series from the Oz books, like the Magic Lands books, or the books written by Baum's family. Retellings/revisionist fiction is kinda its own whole genre. It's typically done with old mythologies and fairytales, but the Oz books, which were an early fairy-tale-like fantasy series, also spawned a bunch of retellings and deviations. Wicked changing the story of the Wizard of Oz for its own purposes is literally no different than Marvel and DC changing the stories of a bunch of Norse and Greek mythologies for their own purposes, lol.

This was awesome as hell 👏 💖💕💯💯rejects you make my TV when I get off work your the best keep it going ❤️ 💯

Jules R

kinda sad you guys didn't get this one emotionally as much as I thought you would. I was an emotional wreck every time I watched it, glinda and elphy's archs in these movies were so wonderful and I was so hooked. made the reaction to be disappointing to be honest. But I understand everyone reacts to things differently. Just bumbed

Stardust_and_Madness

I really liked a different ‘what if Dorothy was the villain’ series of books called Dorothy Must Die. I’ve not tried reading the Wicked series, but I enjoyed the musical and the first movie. I have to wait until the 5th for it to be available on streaming here in Australia, but I can wait.

julie morales

Hey is there any way I can get in contact with you guys to talk about something in private?

Stardust_and_Madness

I was excited for the reaction, but the comment section on YT is horrible at the moment so I’m going to wait until I can watch along and watch it with you guys (it comes out of the 5th in Australia). I hope that’s ok. It’s taking everything in me not to rage on the people forgetting they’re watching a REACTION in their own living room and not sitting in a cinema.

Kyle Southworth

The second act of the Broadway play has always been seen as the weaker act so I think it was always going to be difficult to make this movie live up to the first one imo. LIke you guys mentioned, the songs in this film weren't as catchy as they were in the first one and I also find the story being told in the first one more entertaining as well. It is fun though to go back and watch the first one again after seeing this and catching all the references they make in the songs/dialogue that hint to the transformations that happen in this movie (I don't want to say too much in case anyone reading this hasn't seen it yet)! I 100% understand why you guys feel the way you do and I think your reasonings are valid. It definitely does feel like they skip and leave out parts of the musical but the ironic thing is they actually added to it lol

Christian Seibold

I forgot about Dorothy Must Die! Yeah, that's another one that I've heard lots of people have read.

Tiffany

This was a really disappointing reaction for me. This was a very emotional movie for me and a lot of people and it felt very much like you were making fun of it. I get it that that was your honest reaction but I also have to the right to not be happy about how flippantly you took the entire thing.

Lucy

I agree, I watched about 1h 30 of their reaction and got fed up of the constant comparison to the original movie so i turned it off, and it did feel like they were laughing at emotional points and downgrading the film. I love this movie to bits, and myself I prefer this one over the first. These two movies really hit home for me from my own personal experiences irl and I didnt like the way they spoke about this movie.
