Oh they're gonna get yelled at in the YouTube comments for a few takes, lol. Hide, boys!

Jérémy

Which is funny because by now they've already seen episode 3 and 4 and probably already understand the Ilya/Svetlana relationship XD

Jérémy

Really enjoyed the discussion at the end. Some good observations, maybe some that I don't see exactly the same way but it's fun to get different interpretations. It will be fun to see how you react to the evolution of their relationship over the next episodes.

Ian Mossner

Are any of the women reactors going to react to this show too?

Rachel

Btw for your reactions you need to have the subtitles on

Shivana M

Loved the reaction, especially Aaron's perspective on Ilya and Shane as avoidant vs anxious. To Andrew's comment on hoping Shane becomes more observant, Shane is neurodivergent which I think makes it more difficult for him to really pick up in context clues. Can't wait to see you both react to the rest. The episodes just get better and better!

Joined Patreon just for this reaction series!

Loving the love Reel Rejects is showing for the Heated Rivalry! Will Roxy and Tara be reacting? I feel like the show was created for Roxy, haha!

Amy

The book's author and shows creator have confirmed Shane has undiagnosed Autism, so that informs a lot of how Shane can't read Ilya's cues. It was an interesting take that Ilya's behavior in episode 2 was all tied to the hockey, but I disagree. I'm not an expert on this and the show wasn't explicit about it, but I'm under the impression Russia was somewhat better (low bar) about queer rights at the time when Ilya would have been messing around with the coach's son and first approaching Shane. Russia's major "gay propaganda" law went into effect in 2013, and the Sochi Olympics were in 2014, so that was probably one of the first extended times he had been home since it went into effect, and I think it was the first time he actually felt FEAR about his situation. He told Shane it hadn't been that risky with Sascha pre 2008 because they had the same secret, but then in 2014 he was terrified to even be seen talking to Shane in Russia. I think that was why he pulled back from Shane so hard.

I'm so happy! Loved this! I do have a few important comments that might help illuminate some things, so I hope y'all read this. Yes, gay men use condoms to prevent STDs, especially HIV/AIDS, which bottoms are more prone to. Prep didn't exist at this time, afaik. As others have said, Shane has Autism, so he's gonna need more explicit cues than the subtle ones Ilya might have been giving off. But, I don't think Ilya wanted to be pushed to talk just yet, so it's perfectly fine to wait until Ilya is ready to talk about it. We see this in that ending scene. Shane was trying to get him to open up about home, and Ilya didnt want to, so Shane let it go. It's also Shane's first actual relationship with a man, lol. And they first meet when they are 18. He's not gonna be perfect about communication. But he's definitely trying. It's understandable that this might not be known among straight people, but gay people have a different timeline for things. Because of internalized homophobia, self-hatred, and the like, many gay people end up coming out later in life and don't form relationships until late 20s or 30s, or sometimes even later. Put Autism on top of that, and it makes it an even weirder timeline. But this is also why I relate to Shane a lot. I'm gay, I came out in my 20s, and I'm now almost 28 and have never been in a relationship with anyone before. This happens to a lot of gay people. I believe I am also Autistic, so I have pretty bad social anxiety to top it all off. I had to reach University to realize the feelings that I was having, and then it took even longer for me to accept myself for who I was, and that was a gradual thing. So, all of that is to say that gay relationships tend to be delayed to later in life, and this can cause a lot of anxiety because of the inexperience. On the flip side, gay people who have their first relationships later in life can know what they want more, because they've had time to mature. But this isn't going to translate into perfect execution, lol.

Christian Seibold

Yeah, they first met at the age of 18, so we can't really expect them to be perfect in their communication, lol. Still loved the reaction, and excited to see them watch the relationship develop. The YT comments are mostly positive atm, from what I've seen.

SorceryTortoise

Love these perspectives! Very excited to see you both react to the rest of the series!

Christian Seibold

Btw, I just have to say that I personally like having two-person reactions over four-person ones, because four people gets a bit crowded with the commentary, so thanks for separating these out like this! It's odd some commenters on YT are complaining about that when you've done this with Stranger Things. But anyways, wanted to say I prefer it this way. I also appreciate the choice in Andrew and Aaron. I know some wanted Tara and Roxy, but I personally wanted Andrew's reaction the most :D And Aaron was an unexpected surprise!

Kayla

So excited to see Aaron and Andrew react to this series!! I also think Roxy and Tara would LOVE this and I would love to fangirl out with them in watchalongs

Eric Horstman

What he said. As an…ahem…slightly older gay, growing up in the 80s was a whole other ballpark with its own fun issues & impediments . Also, being on the spectrum myself (which I really only understood around 2015), has always, ALWAYS, been a lovely challenge to everything I do. Hudson’s acting is right on the money!

Fear of Reactions

I really wish Roxy and someone else would've reacted to this. Wish I had something positive to say but this reaction was a little boring compared to Greg and John's. They had/have great chemistry together. This reaction was a little too... quiet, low energy... idk. Man, I wanted to enjoy this reaction. I will watch 3 & 4 to see if the energy is better.

Not A B

What's taking so long for the next episodes they're all out already PLEASE I need my daily dose of HR reaction and I've already seen everything on YT =(

Leah Mcginnis

i took it as them being invested and trying not to miss things

Marisa Jo Miller-McDowell

I get why you skipped the recap, but it means that your counter is off and it’s really hard to get to exactly where you are
