Thank you for the second reaction to this awesome show!

Not A B

Thank you for doing these. It might just be a reaction video like others from yall but for me it real heals something to see straight people watching this show, enjoying it, getting emotional, I feel like it gives me hope in a future where I won't have to hide so much ...

Kip was there in the book. Honestly he probably wasn’t there because of budget constraints. Canada has a mandatory minimum to pay people and that was a separate filming day. The would have had to pay the actor who played Kip for a full day they probably didn’t need him for otherwise. So just film him at the bar watching and call it a day. They also have said they couldn’t afford extras and they couldn’t have him there alone. That’s just a guess on my part but their budget was very tight so it would make sense.

There’s a pretty big difference between Ilya and Svetlana’s relationship and Shane and Rose’s. Ilya and Svet were long time friends messing around out of the public eye. They were a thing before Shane and Ilya had even met. Ilya would have seen Rose as almost retaliatory. Shane said he only dated girls in private (which was a lie cause he wasn’t dating any but…) and then walked out on Ilya and right into an extremely public relationship with a woman. Ilya would have felt like it was being rubbed in his face. So yeah him being jealous and wary of Rose would have been justified. And then of course it all comes back to Shane later in the form of the “marrying Svetlana” convo so probably he finally understood after that. Although I do think Ilya was just trying to find a way to not get deported, not that he was in any danger of that. (We ignore the fact that he was an elite hockey player who had been living in the country for a decade and, even as a Russian, could have easily obtained U.S. citizenship on his own. 😂)

I hate critiquing reactors/reaction content, because it always veers into "you're not reacting right!!11!!" territory which is very dumb as there's no "right" way to react for an audience, but... as a queer man, I don't think Aaron is the best RR host for this kind of content in the future. 😬 He often finds himself in offensive territory (as the YouTube comments tore into him for in previous episodes, like calling Shane the "feminine one" in the relationship), and while it's obviously not out of any kind of malice or bigotry, it is from a place of ignorance/being very uninformed on queer culture, and that can still be offensive and hurtful for queer people to hear/watch. As he said at the end of the first reaction, this was his first time watching a show "like this" with "non-hetero characters" in it. He can obviously grow and learn in his own time, but this was a really hard watch at times. And the other thing is... I don't think he's genuinely invested or interested in this genre/content, and the sort of fake jokey enthusiasm/endearment he tries to put on every single time Gay Stuff happens feels like very transparent pandering and intentionally disingenuous (which I personally find more uncomfortable/offensive), and then he looks miserable/checked out the rest of the time. I don't mean to make him feel bad (in fact I hope he doesn't see this), I'm just looking out for queer people who go into this looking for joy or a little healing, and find themselves offended/hurt instead. Please take this as genuine heartfelt input and feedback, and not an attack on anyone. <3

I get so frustrated when people compare Scott coming out with Ilya and Shane. Not that these reactors did so, but so many do. There is absolutely NO comparison. Scott coming out was about his personal life, but Shane and Ilya coming out as a couple challenges the 'integrity' of the sport. Because they are direct rivals, every win, loss, or penalty between them would be scrutinized as potentially 'fixed' or influenced by their relationship. That is a professional burden Scott and Kip never had to carry. Also, how can people compare a North American player retiring to a Russian superstar who was the captain of the Olympic team? For Ilya, being outed isn't just a PR scandal; it’s a total loss of his home country and a genuine safety risk if his contracts are terminated. Scott had a soft landing; Ilya faces an abyss. Scott came out as he was stepping away, which allowed him to control the narrative without it affecting his play on the ice. Shane and Ilya are the faces of the league. They have to face teammates, coaches, and opposing fans every single night. The loss of trust from their locker rooms is a much higher price to pay while still active. The issue isn't just being gay; it’s the relationship. In the book, Shane is aware that he could likely survive coming out as a single gay man. But coming out as Ilya Rozanov’s partner would make every game they play against each other a spectacle that undermines their teammates' hard work.

"I also believed he could get citizenship, but my understanding is he was worried that if they were outed, he would lose his hockey contracts and possibly face deportation. He wanted citizenship as soon as possible, which led him to think Svetlana would be a good solution. I could be wrong I haven't read the source material.

Lauren

This is actually an instance where the book and show fall victim to a lack of research. Marrying Svetlana would actually be a longer path to citizenship at that point than if he’d just done it himself. If he married Svetlana it would still be at least three years before he could apply because you have to maintain the marriage for a certain amount of time during which he could still conceivably be deported. Whereas Ilya could have applied for an EB-1A visa for people with Extraordinary Ability, which includes professional athletes, and then he would have been able to apply for citizenship after five years. Basically, assuming this was his goal from the beginning and he had a good lawyer, he could have been a citizen of the United States in his own right for a couple years before they even got to the cottage.

Thank you for the reaction guys! As someone who's been down the rabbit hole of HR since the first episode aired, it's nice to see fresh reactions to the show. It gets me out of the echo chamber. Also as a book reader, I feel like we can get nit picky on what reactors miss but I think you'll reactions have been real and it's great that the show stands on its own. As a Canadian, it makes me even prouder that this little show is having such a big cultural impact 🇨🇦

Can we have a Love, Victor reaction next from you two? :) Set in the same universe as Love, Simon!!

Tim

I'm also queer and have the exact opposite opinion. I prefer the honest and sometimes imperfectly phrased reaction of allies over performative allyship any day. I enjoy their reactions to queer content a lot. So thanks guys, very entertaining, hope to see more!

And unfortunately it was both offensively phrased on top of the performative enthusiasm to placate those who are besides themselves to see straight people merely acknowledge us. The worst of all worlds.

Manny

Can yall please make Roxy and Tara watch or rewatch if either of them hasn't seen it? I will 100% watch it all a third time with yall :D

Christian Seibold

Personally, I didn't read it as disingenuous at all.

This was great, happy to watch with you guys! Glad to see you came around on Hollanov's relationship being sweet.

Chris

Good job. I am obviously late to this, so you might not see it. I'll keep this short, which is unusual for me, especially since I have a ton to say about the show and how people react to it. All I will say is that pretty much every negative comment I saw was someone being waaaaaay to sensitive. I apparently need to say that I'm gay, just to make what I'm saying mean more. Absolutely nothing you said was out of line, or wrong, especially considering that you are only going on what's in the show, and not in the book, and it being your first time. Too many commenters obviously forgot what it was like the first time they watched. To expect everyone to somehow notice things immediately, when you know they didn't notice all this stuff their first time either, is a bit crazy. I will definitely be back next season. I thought you did a good job.
