Huh, wow. Ali handled the religion talk *very* badly, which is surprising considering how well he handled it in the special episodes. He got close, but not quite there. If you're a progressive religious person, the Bible is just people's experiences of God and a record of a people's history and self-understanding. You take the good and the spiritual from it, but you leave the bad. That's the simplified answer, and that's really where you need to start - the Bible as literature, a history, a memoir that's not completely truthful but contains a spiritual message. From there you can then learn about the context in fuller detail. Although, it's very common for converts to go to extremes moreso than people who grew up with a religion, so that part of Rue's extreme understanding of the Bible is accurate, lol. She definitely missed the point of what Ali was trying to say.
