Could you fix the audio its quite hard to hear you guys talking during the reaction

Cody Price

One thing that I think you guys missed is that John is the actually the one that is in charge but he has to make Hal feel like Hal’s the one in charge and that he is Hal’s trainee/replacement. That would be a tough job to pull off. There is an old time film that similar dynamic between its two leads and that is Going My Way (1944).

Two OutKast needle drops…. My show of the year by default now 😭

Jay Rushton

Like sorry this was filler there.

Rime Pendragon

Maybe fix the sound ? Can't hear you over the show.

dansoddity

In what way is this filler? We got so many answers as to why John was chosen, what position he is in relation to the succession of the ring, part of the reason why the Guardians changed the rings succession process for earth (which also has something to do with Hal's closeness to Sinestro), and why John's childhood influences the man he is today. They've already established so much in 3 episodes and still allowed for plenty of speculation. If you didn't love it, fine, but by definition this isn't filler.

Lanterns just keeps getting better with each episode. This one hit home for me- the writer captured a feeling I know all too well, namely the tension that can come with being black in America. Everyone feels it differently (or not at all) depending on upbringing. In John's case, his father felt the pain of losing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity (it may have hurt him worse to lose it to a white man who he saw as privileged enough not to have to know fear). His and his wife's response was to go full stage parent and prepare John for the role John Sr. could have had but missed out on. I was blown away by John's mother's performance. I assumed that John Sr. was a single dad based on how the first two issues never mentioned her and then I feared like you guys did that John was going to accidentally kill her. I was also rooting for him to shoot off of her head instead of his dad's. I was thinking "You talk a lot of crap- walk the walk and put the apple on YOUR head!" :-) Now we know a lot more about John: why he likes birds so much, why he wants to be Green Lantern so badly and why he takes all of Hal's crap with minimal complaint. We also now know why Hal is so reluctant to train him- Hal knows he's one injury away from losing the ring to John forever and he makes sure John knows how he feels. I don't know if I could be as calm as John is if Hal had done me dirty before I ever met him. Nine months eating freaking bugs and berries and all it took was some drunk official in a strip club to send Hal to totally sandbag my assignment. Deep down he has to be happy to be chosen to eventually replace Hal- to me it would feel like sweet revenge to take his ring after that. I don't know how the next episode could one-up this one, but I'm sure they will try :-)

Off of Greg's point about John Stewart probably being seen as second fiddle to Hal Jordan, im also in the same boat where I mainly watched the cartoons and movies so Hal Jordan was always the main lantern. With how great and impactful this episode was it definitely recontexualizes John Stewart and the trauma he grew up with and the destiny that was forced upon him because his father wasn't chosen. At the same time I find it interesting in the gradual deconstruction of who Hal Jordan is. Not only is he seen as cavalier to the Guardians, but also in the context of him being selected over a John's dad and highlighting his selection as privilege due to being white so he of course he doesn't have that inherit fear of being a minority in America. I do find this characterization of Hal Jordan pretty odd because at this point it's like bringing up points that due to the imperfect system, the ring made a mistake in choosing someone like Hal Jordan. So I'm wondering if they're going to use more episodes to show the viewer exactly why Hal Jordan is a worthy successor to the ring, otherwise his death from the first episode is strictly for shock value.
