Welcome to Season 2! ;) This one (Geralt and Ciri part) is based on the "Grain of Truth" short story, which probably is the last short story directly referenced in the series. The series did some interesting changes to building blocks of that story, still preserving its spirit. In the original, Geralt doesn't know Nivellen, he just stumbles upon his castle. On the other hand, we learn pretty quickly that he raped the priestess – he doesn't hide that fact while explaining the nature of his curse, although years have passed from those events. Parallels to Beauty & The Best are much more obvious in the book. Few other short stories and later scenes are also written as retellings of classic fairy tales. In this one after being cursed and blindly killing his servants Nivellen begins the life of solitude, which is then broken by a guy cutting precious roses in Nivellen's garden. Long story short, over the years people were bringing their daughters to live in the castle for a year and Nivellen returned them with bags of gold. But even though the girls liked him and some were attracted to him (yeah, even that show wouldn't show some scenes from those memories ;)) the curse remained. Because, as we learn at the end, all legends agree on one thing: the love has to be real. The main difference is of course Ciri. "Grain of Truth" is the second short story, placed even before "Lesser Evil" through which you have met Geralt for the first time. Her presence obviously changes a lot of dynamics in the overall plot.

This season is a wild ride and I loved the concept of touching on the grey area of good and evil. While they both where monsters they also had a pure type of love which led to their distraction. I also liked this from a psychological standpoint because it touches on how you can have PTSD and guilt for your monstrous deeds but still want to life better while continuing to excuse your own toxicity.

Awesome season premiere watchalong! I think Nivellan was the actor who played the awesome Tormund Wildling from Game of Thrones...he (and the make up/fx) did great in this Beauty & The Beast Witcher mash up episode. Loved the interesting pairings already to start Season 2.
