Love this episode, the scene where they dance together is so sweet! I agree with your take on how he comes to realize Mitsumi isn't the same as his younger self! She's clearly very important to him and I think his protective instinct towards her leads him to briefly infantilize her in a way that makes sense to him before she shows him she's capable of handling the hurdles of such an optimistic way of living. I love how her drive and optimism and his calculated and careful attitude towards social situations aren't necessarily portrayed as always good or bad, but instead like a complimentary push and pull, helping her to be more mindful and him to be more open.
