I-LAND 2 EP 4 - DISCUSSION

A lot of thoughts! For the Seesaw battle, I disagree that Minsol was sent to Ground because of Saebi. There is no guarantee that Panorama would've won if Minsol and Saebi switched, and honestly, Panorama could've lost without Saebi since she did so well. Saebi did her best, and Minsol could only do her best. A part of survival shows is to learn to execute concepts you're not used to (Jiyoon and Minsol are experiencing this, and I think Mai is the role model for how to deal with this challenge!), On the vocal performance, both were amazing. My personal preference is the I-Land stage. My favorite K-pop vocal stage is still the May Fly team Kingdom performance--yes, it was chilling, but the teamwork was amazing. If I hadn't had the behind-the-scenes and interim check footage and had just watched these without knowing the members, I probably would've chosen Ground's stage, but we get the progression, and the teamwork makes the difference for me. The issue often comes back to maturity, and with survival shows being almost exclusively minors, this will always be an issue. I'm in the camp that minors debuting should be an exception, not the norm. Commentary on the setup of the vocal battle, I think the song choices were very intentional. At this point in the show, I think we kinda knew Jiyoon would be in the debut lineup. I personally believe they chose the Ground song that would suit Jiyoon to get her confidence up and half-expected there to be a Jeungun vs Jiyoon battle here. I truly wonder if there hadn't been beef between the two if Ground would've won. I'm not saying it's wrong and if I was a producer, I'd probs do the same, but it's very convenient to give Ground the win: Jeungun's first defeat in the show to her 'rival' no less, Fuko's defeat in vocal which she is confident in, Minsol getting a win to motivate her o continue to work hard after almost being eliminated, and Jiyoon wining and getting her 'revenge.' For the I-Land dance unit, the performance is less impressive the second watch. They did well, but not to their potential imo. Not many notes, except I REALLY want to see where Jiwon is now, but doing that work as a 14y/o--DAMN.

i agree with a lot that you said!! i also disliked the whole "lets let one team lose" concept from the i-landers because i feel like it should be all or nothing when it comes to winning something like this--i would say 'no one should be sent to ground' if that were me. jiyoon did exceptionally well this time (this performance made her my one pick at the time! a crazy fact about her is that she used to be a theblacklabel trainee as well so you definitely hear that yg-esque influence in her voice), and i'm really looking forward to how you evaluate her and the other izna members' performances in the future as well! jungeun and fuko's performance also blew me away, it's definitely a stage to remember as well so personally i would not have been able to choose a winner between them.

So I had the opposite opinion: I personally preferred I'm Fine, the emotions they conveyed captivated me way more than Eyes Nose Lips. Maybe it's just my bias against that song (sorry, BLASPHEMY I know 🤷🏻‍♀️), ENL didn't move me while I acknowledge it was probably technically more perfect (at least w/Jiyoon). The harmonies and chemistry of I'm Fine were just so engaging (for me).

Both vocal performances were pretty good and all members in both teams performed to their A game. Since I’m a SONE, I will always be highly critical of any covers from SNSD/Taeyeon so I have high expectation to “Fine” for both Jungeun and Fuko. (Not kinda agree with PD here about ENL being the harder song to pull off because this song is also not easy especially the last part). I won’t say that Jungeun and Fuko did a perfect job but I think both vocals compliment each other nicely and for me personally it edged out ENL a bit (it’s a close game though because Jiyoon performed the best here out of the 4). Even though Minsol did really well, I still think the gap between her and Jiyoon was too huge to overlook. But I can totally see why Ground team won in this since it’s a close game and the judges can have different perspectives and I think they judge it in the same mindset as PD. I have no expertise in Dance cover or performance so I will let others comment about it lol.

8:45 - (Your question regarding Jiyoon’s mindset) - This song suits Jiyoon for sure and that is the reason she did so well here. You already know there will be more situations to get Jiyoon change her mindset, so at this moment it was just because of the song choice. I think she is a fan of TaeYang/BIGBANG and this ballad songs of theirs. She trained under The Black Label prior to joining WakeOne and it got me thinking she joined The Black Label because of TaeYang/Teddy. Random side note: I have recently found out Fuko could debut in the upcoming P Nation girl group, which is being produced by SoYeon. This makes me excited, because rewatching this show now makes me like Fuko a lot! The moment with Somi in this episode and the question she asked… I was touched a lot + I appreciated they showed other contestants background and that Jeemin is not the only member trying her luck again after not making it elsewhere, because later on Mnet will mention this about Jeemin all the time and not about the other ones… Although! Fuko is popular a lot and fans want her to debut pretty much under any label, which is debuting a new girl group soon, so keep that in mind that the P Nation thing is not official! I am not sure if I have a preference between the Bad Boy performance and Like OOH-AHH… both did not amaze me as Whistle or Panorama did, but both were not bad either… Although I enjoyed Eyes, Nose, Lips more, I would give it to the Fine performance, because as a team they worked better together. Minsol did really well, but it felt like Jiyoon’s stage featuring Minsol and that was not the point of this round. They should have sent Jiyoon alone there. 😅😅 In that scenario it would be more fair in the regard that Minsol wouldn’t win just because being there with Jiyoon

You should definitely react to jungeun on lee mujin service ep. 160. Her vocals are insane they didn’t show her full potential at all during iland 2.
