Cool. MORE TEARS :D

But seriously, after obsessing over his vocals for a decade, when I finally dive into Jonghyun, I didn't think what I'd obsess over most are his writing abilities. He was truly a divine artist and he really has such a sentimental and poetic way with his words that can't be touched and this album being less pop and more r&b/jazz really as well as a focus on the inspiration being listener submissions, really put that lyrical mastery into the spotlight.

What were your favorite songs from this album?

I loved the extra details you included with Blue Night and how you delved deep into the meanings of the album and each track!! Very integral to the project and I always appreciate the extra context. My favoite songs are Skeleton Flower by how absolutely gorgeous it is and introducing me to the cool flower itself. How it’s white but becomes transparent with the rain is so neat and fits the song so well. And the enviable passage of time. It hits even harder with Jonghyun's passing, even if that was not the original intent at the time. I also really loved 2:34, the chill and joyous vibe throughout is just so nice to listen to. I love how he plays with his voice as well. Like I said before this album and Story Op. 2 (which I’m so excited for you to get to as well!!! and I think is even better than 1 so you are in for a treat!) are such good albums for healing, relaxing and especially for these upcoming chillier fall days and nights. I truly beleive that music can hit differently depending on the environment it’s listened to in. For me, it just hits extra special then: day or night, blue sky or overcast and rainy, inside a place vs outside, etc.. For this album and Op 2 it’s with some nice comfy clothes and some coffee and something sweet. In fact, one day I went to a Cafe and ordered just that. It was chilly so I was bundled up. Once I finished enjoying my meal lol I put on my headphones and walked around, listening to this album from start to finish. I was all warm from the coffee and stuff so I was able to walk around from evening till night with no issue! It felt pretty magical!

I've tattooed Skeleton Flower. Yeah.

I am writing comments as I listen to your video so here goes: 1. Yes it’s byulroo. He used to say byulroo is just an ok looking dog that’s why the name is perfect for her 🤣 tho he often got into twitter fights back in the day everytime someone makes fun of roo (specifically the way she looks 😂). Twitter jonghyun was something else i swear like new gen stans would get a stroke lol 2. Skeleton flower is a very prominent metaphor in jonghyun’s art. He actually is a published writer. He wrote a book called Skeleton Flower: things that have been released & set free. A lot of shawols have a skeleton flower tattoo to commemorate jonghyun. 3. I remember when i first heard happy birthday i was giggling sm bec i kept picturing jonghyun in my head singing happy birthday to mr. president, marilyn monroe style 😭😭😭 Also PD, I’m not sure if you’re up for it given that Poet | Artist is a posthumous album but it’s really worth a listen. My favorite jjong song ever is 우린 봄이 오기 전에 (Before Our Spring), which is from that album. I’m not at all a sentimental person but that song has been played thru a looot of tough times.

Skeleton flower is a MASTERPIECE omg, I still remember I was in AWE when I first listened to it!! Also here a silly picture just because I wanna share Jonghyun official twitter profile https://x.com/realjonghyun90/status/554510158345166848?s=46&t=rTwXvwBo0_2AD_DkIFJQqQ Everything is still up there, his thoughts on art, his favorite movies, inspirations, silly tweets.. I still go there sometimes when I miss those times 🫶🏻 Also I really really enjoyed this reaction, everything you point out, little things and details, I wouldn’t know otherwise not knowing korean, so this is so interesting and so precious to me!

My favourite is Happy Birthday, it feels like he's singing it /to/ me particularly, in my ear. It brings me comfort like no other song. I really enjoyed how you organised the Listening Party with all the info ♡ It is much appreciated! Excited to follow ur future Jonghyun and Shinee reactions!

juls

My favorite songs are I’m fine and I’m sorry, also I really appreciated the research you put in for the listening party PD! I knew that the songs were inspired by the stories he heard during Blue Night, but i didn’t know all the details so thank you for that. Its super interesting hearing your dissections/ translations of each song since I’m not korean. I'm learning new things even after all these years of listening to jjong's music :) Can’t wait for Story Op. 2!

Also, i believe all streaming profits from Jonghyun’s music goes to the Shiny Foundation! It was created my Jonghyun’s mom and sister, a foundation that supports young struggling artists I’ve linked their instagram in case it sparks your curiosity :) https://www.instagram.com/shiny90408?igsh=eGZneWdwYTN2M2Ex

I think rounding out with Poet | Artist, an album the rest of shinee recently payed homage to, would be a great way to segway back into shinee's discog so I think that would be awesome. Also I was under the impression that Minho named Roo? Maybe not tho

JT

I also remember that lore - when roo shitted on minho’s shirt lol honestly i don’t even know anymore when it comes to shinee. sometimes they just be saying shit 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Fluffy_Chick

Thanks for the details! I've never know any of these, just listen and vibe lol. my fav song are U & I and Like you. I love his funky and up-beat stuff! and after know the details from you, a bit biased to 02:34 lol, I always wonder why I feel like I heard SHINee's members' voices at the end of the song, so it's actually them! PS. As for Byulroo, Yes, that's her name! but it isn't from Jjong. Minho is the one who gave her that name. because when Jjong first got her and didn't decide for her name yet, Roo had pee on Minho clothes and then Jjong just let Minho named her lol.

Fluffy_Chick

what I noticed is Jjong and Jinki are two members that made you cried, but in a different type of feeling. It just feel like that Jjong's voice crushed your heart with sadness and something so emotional, while Jinki's voice so warm and hopeful but that's something that make you even sadder. kinda like smiling through your tears type of feeling. when their voice blend in together in harmonies, MAGIC happens. Really, I can't wait for you to deep dive to SHINee's discography when you hear them singing together.

jiminycricket

Didn’t think I would tear up now listening to this album since Roo unfortunately passed today. She lived an amazing 15 years.

Fluffy_Chick

sadly, she just passed tonight (KST time) such an amazing life for 15 years. ㅠㅠ

Robin Harris

This was done beautifully. Thank you PD.

WiseSmellyLegs

Hmm… if there ever was an idol, who could shake a hand with G-Dragon as with someone who is equally artistic and visionary musican as him, it was Jong Hyun! And that comes from a die-hard V.I.P!

Lindsay

I always love listening to what you have to say about any new music you listen to. Compared to other reaction type videos, I feel like you really LISTEN deeply to the music and presentation and really feel it as a whole experience, which always leads to wonderful commentary and interpretations. Especially as a Shawol, it makes me emotional seeing someone get impacted by Jonghyun the same way I always have throughout these years. I'm really looking forward to whenever you get around to reacting to Story Op. 2, it's probably my favorite Jonghyun album. Although be warned, I think it has some of his most raw and personal songs. I also recommend to look up the Essays for Story Op. 2, where Jonghyun gives his own sort of commentary on each song. Also very profound and quite dark, so read it at your own pace. I couldn't find the original Korean text, although I'm sure it's out there, but there's a PDF of the English translations here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kMxibJHyY1hYF6OEd2Wan8bMcc8bqsfB/view

I never in my Shawol life thought I would see a Jonghyun reaction like this. Thank you for taking it seriously and putting in the time and thought and emotion. I always think, “If people would only spend a little time on his work they would see what a genius poet/artist he is.” You exceeded that. Bless you.

Lena

This is my first time listening to End of a Day after knowing that Roo passed last 2 weeks. I’ve kept up with her through her Instagram that Jonghyun’s older sister managed. So the tears definitely came knowing she’s no longer here with us. But now I’d like to think that they’re both with each other, and Jonghyun finally has his puppy again whom he can “come home” to at the end of his day. So thankful to Jonghyun’s mother and Sodam for taking amazing care of Roo all these years.

orion_is_tired

Skeleton Flower felt like such a gift when I first heard it. That’s been my favourite flower since I was a child. SHINee came to me in a particularly rough period of time as a teen so to have just another connection & as someone who has had lifelong depression it just felt like I was destined to find their comforting music to get me through.

orion_is_tired

Maybe Tomorrow is probably my second most listened to on the album, as someone with chronic illnesses it’s often tiring just thinking about everything to be done in a day.

EnzioAkira

Skeleton Flower has been my favorite Jonghyun song since I first heard it. It’s such a blessing.

Lee

Diphylleia grayi makes me weep every time. I'm Sorry is my favorite song by him and it has a very, very special place in my heart. I'm the type to bottle things up, not tell anyone how I truly feel. I don't often cry. But to this day, Jonghyun is the only artist who I listen to when I feel like I need to cry and release my feelings.
