Oh man, when SWF first came out Korea was obsessedddd. It was THE cultural zeitgeist. That's why you kept seeing dancers from that show on all the survival shows and variety for YEARS afterwards

They were definitely told to dial up the comments to each other to 100 for the 'fight' aspect of the show. The pro dancer scene is small enough so most of them know each other before the show lol.

It's a little funny, your reaction and how you cringe on the start of the episode but since I've seen this a few times and know how things turn out or how they are at present, this is amusing and nostalgic for me but this is still the legendary S1 that birthed 4 more seasons of a dance show and for a reason 😄

this show is sooo much evil editing (confirmed by the members and explained in the bonus gala episode of the show) but somehow it doesnt ruin the show for me haha especially knowing how much they have known eachother since way before the show and how friendly they are after it

From what I know, the dancers don't pick a song for each battle but they do create a playlist that suits their genre of dance for the DJ to pick through and use throughout the season because some dance styles cater more towards certain music.

I hope you watch SWF2 with Jam Republic! That's the only season of this show I've seen and they represented western/global dancers well!

Okay so something one needs to recalibrate going in.. Despite the fact that many of these women have choreographed numerous kpop dances, this is NOT an idol show, so expectations of idol behavior/etiquette have to be thrown out the window. Sure it's been ramped up for television dramatics but the bluntness/harshness is often real. And let's get it out of the way now: idol dancers and street dancers have different strengths, so one type is NOT better than the other. It's simply different focuses of discipline. While Korea in general was obsessed with the show, I remember kpop fans were very sore about the show initially - because of Chaeyeon joining of course. I know more than a few Wizones who considered it a "dark history" for a couple years after the show because they thought she was judged unfairly (which I think has mostly died off now).

I've seen Gabee on many variety shows and I gotta say, her personality on those is the polar opposite of what we saw of her in this first episode. She is very extroverted and confident by nature but I think this survival show setting is bringing out her competitive spirit cause whenever I've seen her she was super fun, easy going and even dorky.

SWF S1 is a show that must be studied by all aspiring TV PDs for how staged/forced the script/situations was, how to extend segments to the absolute max, and how to very obviously evil edit BUT YET, still make a show insanely popular

I’m sure you’ve already figured it out PD but Hyojin Choi is recognizable from like alllll of 1Million, like viral 1Million og especially mid 2010s, she usually had a short pixie cut, she and other leaders have popped up on some award shows and choreos but nothing off the top of my head from recent viewings

I think the show was a lot of people’s first look at how intense dance battle is supposed to be taken, like you are supposed to be provoking the opponent as well as playing to the judges and the audience, and you can tell right away who has the experience of this especially on larger scales like a Lip J, like a Monika (which is why it’s so weird to see them as not judges like they’re legend status), everyone knows it’s a competition so you just gotta bring it, it’s fun when it’s more cheeky more provoking more nasty

I'm so excited to see you watch SWF! I believe a dancer from SWF 2 said that the dancers can select songs from a list, but when they battle, they actually don't know which song will play. I do think them dancing to the same song is more accurate to what happens in actual battles though, at least for waacking.
