Those are valid comments lmao. For this album, I would say, musically born savage has a pretty "obvious" flow and at first I wasn't a fan of the autotune too. But rewatching the MV and all their promotion pre-release?? I GET IT. This song is very lore heavy bc the Producerz (yejun, noah, eunho) need to match their lore since this is a continuation from the last MV. Very battle-y, comic, marvel type of song.

Like in pt.1, they also have one more lore-based song but it is more on the title by itself and not the song as a whole (chroma drift is eunho and bamby's "manhwa" title and lunar hearts is noah's). So they get to do anything they want with it and it is not as specific as how the title track would be.

Their caligo albums are more of "here are genres we wanna try, pick one you like" type of situation hahah. I also love how sophisticated each song is with so many layers to appreciate. Kudos to yejun, noah, and eunho for making these masterpieces and bamby, hamin for doing amazing with the recording bc these songs are easy listening and hard singing lol. (They got revenge by making hard choreos tho /hj). Anyway, love the review PD! Hope to meet in other reaction to plave!

I hate to say it but I agree. Now that you mention the other direction this could've taken I would've loved Island and Born Savage to be swapped out with Island being the title track for this. It's got all the big moments a title track needs and would've really been a stand out amongst the 5th gen. Especially with Caligo Pt. 2 getting some international success Island being all english would've expanded the reach.

You should really see them do Blossom Parade on the livestream - they were (understandably) sweating bullets about even the idea of performing it live but did so, so well! And the MV (or as it's listed, Special Video) for HMPH! is a genuine sight for sore eyes, definitely check it out if you're giving their MVs a whirl. I think I said it before but chronological order by date of release is absolutely the way to go. (Also dunno if you've heard this but Adora has backing vocal credits on Born Savage and Think I Am!) I think you'll maybe start liking Born Savage more if you see it performed with its choreography (which imho is some of their strongest choreo yet - the members were able to collaborate with Rie Hata and Bada Lee). It's interesting to hear you talk about Born Savage in comparison to Dash. I know many who love Dash as you do, but also know of a lot of people who found it too incongruous to ever get into. Often (not always) the same people who dislike Born Savage's gratuitous autotune (which was almost removed, but Noah was of a mind that it had to stay in) and/or think Eunho's rap break is too jarring. (I agree with you that his rap break is a highlight, plus if you look at his lyrics there, he's letting rip in more ways than one. The other members toe the line to be polite but imo Eunho's the member who gets away with rapping about what they're all actually thinking lol.) And it's funny that you were talking about the idea of marketing Born Savage as a B-side to Dash - the members have said they considered having HMPH! be the title track and making Born Savage the prerelease, even though they'd written Born Savage always intending for it to be the title track (as they did with Dash). And I think that uncertainty didn't improve when they saw the initial metrics for HMPH! go through the roof either (I clearly remember Noah on livestream the other week, gawking at 10m views for HMPH! MV and saying "Oh, did we pick the wrong title track?" lol). The disharmony that you describe as marketing errors is something I honestly kind of see as part of PLAVE's charm at this point lol (which isn't the same as saying I disagree, but that I think their patchwork quilt approach to tracklists is almost its own pull at this point. As in, who the fuck opens their album with an acapella doowop song in the year of our lord 2026 oh yeah PLAVE do lol. The slicker the whole PLAVE machine gets, the more I crave their rough, weird edges, I suppose). Personally I don't think their tracklists have made much sense since ASTERUM 134-1; there's a big contrarian part of me that loves the genre roulette chaos. But even I can see when it gets as incongruous as it does here that it can cross the line into frustrating for some. And you say it's not PLAVE's fault... with respect, you're speaking from the hardened kpop fan perspective so of course you'd say that lol. If the optics of the tracklist annoy you, I'm here to tell you it is ENTIRELY PLAVE's fault. Genuinely! Because the tracklist was decided by them and they decided to release it like this. I'm not sure you've seen enough from them to fully comprehend this yet, but VLAST are an entertainment agency only insofar as they produce PLAVE's non-musical content and manage their schedule. They're a tech startup who had to learn kpop management on the fly. (If you look at the credits list in their physical albums - excluding the members, there's about 20-odd people listed in management/marketing roles, and well over 100 people credited in various dev/programming/artist roles. VLAST are a one-group agency, might I add, and do not have/have never had/[will never have?] trainees). Almost everything we've seen so far suggests VLAST sticks to their lane and leave music entirely to the members. Us PLLI always say walk around crowing about how PLAVE are self-produced and all but I think that glosses over the level of agency the members actually have (not just musically, in general - but *especially* musically). They're first on the song credits. They're in charge of recording & part distribution. They handpick their collaborators themselves. They even got their own recording studio at VLAST HQ, custom-built to suit them specifically. (We even had a tour of it on a livestream recently, it was fun!) What I'm saying is, I cannot emphasise enough that the members are always the first and last authority when it comes to any music-related decision regarding PLAVE, from their debut song to here. (And they've been entrusted with that role because frankly they come to PLAVE as industry professionals with I'm-not-supposed-to-say-how-many-years of collective experience under their belts.) If you don't like one of PLAVE's music-related decisions, then the blame lies solely with PLAVE. Which I think is fine, but I've noticed some people (and here I'm referring to "fans" who come in with a stakeholder mentality... you know the type) have real trouble adjusting to this paradigm. A rant for another place and time. William (VLAST's CEO) was speaking about this very recently at a university - the fact PLAVE only have one big domestic comeback a year, compared to everyone else's 2 or 3, is all down to the demands of this level of self-production on the members. To paraphrase William: PLAVE sit down and scramble to make a song, they release said song, then they reconvene and scramble to make another. (They do all this while livestreaming for up to 4-5 hours per week and around various other schedules.) They're not pulling from a suite of hundreds nay thousands of tracks sourced from songcamps, initially because it was a luxury not afforded to them as a weirdo virtual group that no-one took seriously. But now (and this is maybe my most lukewarm of takes) it feels a bit like they have the luxury of being able to struggle, if you know what I mean? So by Jove, struggle on they will. They very much came to the table for Caligo Pt 2 with nothing in the vault, and as good as the individual songs that came out are, you clearly see it's a selection of 5 songs that have little in common other than the album they wound up coming from. These are the songs we got on the mini-album because they were the songs that were ready by the deadline. And this is obviously a draining way to work to the point of being unsustainable (even William admits it's "hellish") but the solution would be giving up part of that hard-won autonomy and risk losing both their own sense of fulfillment in their work (what I think they're most worried about tbh and understandably they've all been through too much shit both personally and professionally to get to where they are now to willingly relinquish that level of creative control) but also that intangible sense of what made PLAVE special in the first place (Yejun always speaks about not wanting to ever forget PLAVE's original intention, whatever that means). I think they need more external, experienced and trusted collaborators (like Bada Lee and Rie Hata) who can shoulder more of the burden and won't fuck with the formula too much - people who also won't forget PLAVE's original intention. Frankly, they had one in EL CAPITXN, but he appears to be busy with other projects right now (AHOF, SKINZ, solo stuff too) and doesn't have a credit on Pt 2. William also described PLAVE as producers, directors and staff members. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the members were actually on VLAST payroll - there is very little I've seen about the PLAVE/VLAST relationship that is typical of the usual idol/agency relationship. Whenever William speaks of PLAVE it's always as talented colleagues, not as any sort of commodity ripe to be exploited. He also described PLAVE as more like an indie band who are idols in name only. Honestly, that's probably the best way to think about them... PLAVE, a little indie band, you probably haven't heard of them, they made 19 billion won profit last year lol. If I'm being honest with you, I think all of PLAVE's many contradictions are a big part of what keep me around.

That frustration is valid lmao. Because same for me, I really really love the songs individually but as an album, Born Savage being there right in the middle between the other four disrupts the cohesiveness of the album as a whole. Though I got used to it and slowly loving the contrast now lol. Happy to see how passionate you are with their songs in this album, because it means (I assume) you are completely smitten with their music as this point.

tamkan

really didn't like the auto tune for Born Savage so I always prefer their live vocal version lol. My 3 year old daughter loves Born Savage though lol. Hmph! is my favorite song from this album! Their special video is very cute! and I also feel this album wasn't as interesting as Caligo Pt.2. 🥲

never thought I'd see pd do aegyo HSHAHAHHAA

Omg I’m laughing sorry but I get your frustration bc I really love each of the songs but it’s a bit frustrating on how obviously out of place born savage is. I think since they really wanted to push the lore (and wanted to finish the Caligo series) that they put born savage in Caligo pt.2 At first, I’m not sure if the title track is really just nor for me, or it’s the b-side, but then I just realized that every song is perfect, it’s just that they don’t seem like they belong together in an album. But really, what a great songs it is 👏

A fierce battle with Caligo, and Plave earned Disney's springtime love and happiness. "Happyly Ever After...". That's how I understand this album lol Thank You. I've been waiting for this video for a long time, and it's been a valuable time

Sadly, based on a lecture the VLAST CEO gave at a university recently, it seems PLAVE and VLAST don’t have the privilege of picking and choosing which songs go into which album because they don’t have a song bank. Like, zero. Whatever the members produce goes straight into the next scheduled release. That’s one of the downsides of being self-produced artists while also actively promoting as idols and VTubers with weekly livestreams and content. It’s probably also a big reason why the members looks tired and burned out while preparing the album. I honestly hope they can ease some of that pressure in the future by including one or two songs from external producers. But at the same time, it’s possible they simply haven’t found outside tracks that fit PLAVE or that the members genuinely like enough to include in an album or they take pride on being self produced and prefer to do it themselves since they compose songs with each members strength in mind. That said, I personally think the contrast and “out of place” feeling of “Born Savage” is part of Plave's charm. Also, they are the one choosing which song should be the title track 🤣. VLAST has no say on Plave's music.

I felt the same way too. When listening to the album, Born Savage sometimes feels a bit out of place and kind of breaks the mood. But now I’m gradually getting used to it, or I just put only Born Savage on repeat itself, it actually gets better every time I listen to.

The way I saw this album promotions was anyone willing to come back after Caligo pt. 1 and listened to born savage then were gifted the master pieces that are Caligo Pt. 2 b sides. When Hmph MV was released as a pre release it was so popular with Plli that Noah questioned whether they chose the wrong title track so it’s funny that you mentioned Hmph could have been a title track. Thank you for giving Plave a listen we Plli’s appreciate anyone willing to see Plave as real K-pop artist.
