I loved watching this along with you, PD. I don't want to spoil Jinshi's age because it is a part of a plot but its safe to say they are both legal adults. I love how this show is funny. Its an enjoyable show with both the interesting educational & detective bits as well as political intrigue.

I love the "horny" in Apothecary Diaries, is so funny just how Jinshi is just trying his best and Maomao just shuts him down 😂 Also, taking into account the show centers around concubines and courtesans, more "mature" subjects are bound to be talked about, which I think is very refreshing

I think it garnered a lot of female fans bc of the story and how the setting was handled, having concubines and courtesans was part of the deal during this time period but the show never makes it feel exploitative and Maomao grew up with courtesans and being around the brothel so her perspective is always respectful, geared towards helping and serving working women, in an educational and sex positive way bc it is an official job and position—baseline, the characters are treated as full people and so even when sex is used as a joke it doesn’t feel lecherous or punching down necessarily

Maomao is 17 at the start of this series and for plot reasons I wont say but Jinshi is older than her but not by a lot. At the beginning Jinshi does put on the charm on Maomao but after realizing it doesnt work on her he takes a step back from that. I do love the relationship the two form as the show goes on, its gradual but Jinshi doesnt always act like a strict eunich around her and Maomao tends to lower her guard around him as well

The rhododendron flower is toxic. I learned that in toxicology though I was never good in the class, it’s like the one thing I remember. I guess just because it was surprising to me since the state where I live has this flower everywhere. Also by judging this fact, I’m assuming the parts of the show where you learn about poisons is true
