listening to ascend- for the first time honestly gave me flashbacks to how i felt listening to the debut ep. every single song goes together in perfect harmony and you can tell that it's meant to be together on an album. what sets this album apart and why i think this is such a big step up for them is because you can tell every song is specifically written and composed w their voices and abilities in mind. everyone got to show off in the entire project! i honestly didn't think it's possible but it made me fell in love w zerobaseone all over again.

AH i appreciate all the context on gunwook’s song !! all things considered, it’s almost like so obvious that this song came from him. as a tmi, gunwook was working on this song initially for himself, but thought it would sound good as a group song so he worked hard on it and sent it to their a&r and just hoped it got picked LMAO. he actually wanted taerae to record the guide since he sort of made the song specifically to push taerae to his limits, but i think taerae kept dodging him bc he didn’t know this was potentially for them lol. this album was very transformative for them and it’s their first title track/album in a while without kenzie working on it. it almost makes me wonder if this sort of sound was something they were going to go with before kenzie started working with them. when i first listened to this album, i was sort of just thinking its like zb1 made a close your eyes album.

the truth is i was sooo nervous for this album/comeback overall because it's a rebrand, a new start.. and i was pleasantly surprised. i was genuinely crashing out when i listened to this album because it is SO GOOD. huge credit to the members who had many input (more than anything they have released) for this one. matthew mentioned it recently - they're a lot more free, a lot more involved, they're not rushing anymore and it definitely shows! just like them who felt relieved as this album's reception is very positive, i feel soooo relieved too with zerobaseone's future. it is such a well done rebrand because it is so new, polished, yet also still so zerobaseone. i personally know of many people who tuned in for this album upon hearing top 5 despite not really being huge zb1 listeners before - i am so happy for them haha.

You should check out Love Ain’t Easy by Matthew. He just dropped it on his birthday, and he even took part in composing it. His potential as an R&B singer really shines through in this track. What a talent.

ngl i was so depressed about zb1's breakup for a good month but HELL YEAH i'm not upset about it as much anymore after this... wakeone really got their shit together with zb1 (crazy) for this release and i'm so happy about this upgrade zb5 got. this album gave every single member ways to show off that previous ot9 songs never did and their vocals were soo delicious. *chef's kiss* in terms of favourites, i have 3 that alternate depending what's the mood - top 5, v for vision, and changes. they have amazing music show stages for v for vision so hopefully you get to check that out :D

ohh you have to watch v for vision live stages, matthew is also obsessed with v for vision hahaha for me this album is the first ever album that i liked every single song in the album from them (and in awhile in general) since this literally rarely happen to me i think the last kpop album that i liked every single song in it is BTOB's Brother Act

ZB1 had a lot of creative control over this album and rebrand. The chose the songs for the album and unanimously voted for TOP 5 to be the title track. In an interview, they said that since they're five now, there's no one to hide behind, so they really focused on honing in on their strengths so that their weaknesses don't stand out. I think this goal really shows in how catered to ZB1 the songs feel, despite them not actually being made specifically for them (aside from Customize).

So i absolutely cannot rank this album because all the songs rank pretty similar in sense that most of them are songs that i didnt think i could like them but I DO. I ADORE THEM ALL. This makes me really excited for their future.

i do think the sound in their title tracks was always very uniquely them, namely in bloom, good so bad, blue, now or never and yura yura. their discography wasn’t ever very cohesive as a whole but they definitely had a signature sound / concept throughout their title tracks especially good so bad and onward. they really perfected the nostalgic uplifting yet sad boy group pop sound imo and i will always miss that side of them. that being said this album is by far their most cohesive project and suits them very well. i’m ultimately glad they left their coming of age nostalgic identity behind so that those memories and that sound could die with zb9, as it was such a unique feeling to the nine of them and really encapsulated their journey as nine in music form. it does make me a bit sad that wakeone started giving zb1 such cohesive and well thought out music only once the members they liked least left the group, but im glad nonetheless that zb5 is able to put a new foot forward in such a well received and high quality manner. looking forward to seeing what they do in the future with this new identity

i loved hearing you break down customise! as a gunwook bias and bts and zb1 (ot9) as my ults, it was so cool hearing you talk about the process of composing and arranging etc. and wow gunwook is so incredible for doing ALL THIS at 21... i rly enjoyed listening again with you and i fully agree that this is their best album ever, no competition. and i say this as someone who LOVES the youth fresh pop vibe that zb1 used to have with in bloom, blue, good so bad, yura yura etc. this is definitely their most musically cohesive album and it is so hard for me to pick a least favourite bc they’re all so, so well-rounded. customise is my favourite for SURE and it isn’t even close (not just bc i’m biased LOL i genuinely love the song more with every listen). i really recommend you to check out the v for vision stages on mcountdown and the other award shows bc the choreo is so cool and fits the song so well too! (fun fact: matthew is as obsessed with v for vision as you are LOL) you might wanna check out the top 5 performances too while you’re at it because they’re great too! also, i cannot recommend zb1’s kcon japan 2026 stages enough. they have an hour-long set LOL so if you really wanna choose a few to react to/watch i would definitely recommend checking out "customise" (this was their first ever performance/reveal of the song, they also opened their kcon set with this) and "sherlock (shinee)" cover! both were incredible. matthew and gunwook collaborated with jo1 to cover aespa's "dirty work" and that was excellent too. more about customise: gunwook mentioned that they filmed a customise recording behind that might be cool to check out if you wanna see more of him directing and stuff. not sure when it’ll be out though. (unrelated to ascend- but gunwook has a whole playlist of his covers on zb1’s youtube if you wanna check out more bc i remember you loved the one you watched!) sorry for the long comment but i’m always so happy to see zb1 reactions, it’s why i subscribed to patreon LOL. adore this! so excited for future zb1 reactions too~

This is my favorite album of the year so far, which is wild because of the comebacks but every song was soooo good and sooooo my vibe! Also, Gunwook is the Maknae now, which bith feels so right but also so not right lmao

I am going to be honest and say that I was never majorly into Zb1's music before this split (?) happened and I really wasn't going to check the album out. But I heard top 5 and was like okay this is fairly decent lets just see the bsides and yeah they really nailed them. I will still say that customize and exotic are my absolute favorites. Generally they all sound just amazing and these two just hit the pop side of my brain just right. Initially customize was my favourite of the two, and whilst I still love it, exotic is fast becoming my favourite. The chorus is super addictive and I like the tone of the rap parts after the chorus. It is just such a well produced song. As for customize, the vocals really shine on this and they honestly just sound amazing? Plus the opening of the song is so pretty. Overall, did not expect to enjoy this album this much and I am so pleasantly surprised.

I agree how taerae voice matches so much better in these music styles. he is so amazing on top 5 with that R&B hip hop groove. i couldn't find myself to like ot9 music sadly since debut 😅 this album though. amazing.

So I loved And2ble Curious WAY more than Top 5...BUT.... this album is 🤌 and I love it way more than And2bles. Its so weird and surreal to see them split apart but debuting and re debuting at the same time 🤯! Customize is definitely my favorite! I cant be sad anymore if all their music is gonna be this good!

Because ZB1 was formed through a survival show, I think it took them much longer to find their identity compared to idol groups that were planned and built from the beginning by one company. To me, Iconik was the moment they finally found their direction, and TOP5 feels like a more refined and mature evolution of that identity. Honestly, I think the Ascend album was only possible because OT9 became OT5. If all nine members had still needed equal line distribution, I don’t think the album could’ve achieved this level of cohesion and completeness.

And they performed “Customize” at KCON Japan. 😭 Their whole set was so good though. Sherlock, the solo stages, the unit performances… they really delivered every time. You should check it out if you haven’t already!

taerae actually changed the way he is singing on this album, like in terms of technique he brought his sound a lot more forward/made it brighter rather than dark, especially in his mid range, which is a much more pop way of approaching it. you can really hear it in v for vision. i've been waiting for him to do that for a while.

for both albums the title track is my least favorite LOL but while i do really enjoy and2ble's album and think it's a great debut, ascend has this level of polish that is just really impeccable.

I felt like some of their older bsides were good because zb1 members were performing the songs while this album has good bsides and zb1 members make these good songs sound better. I also think this album sounds the most cohesive compared to their older albums. The last album that felt cohesive for me was Melting Point.
