I think you were almost there, but yeh I think its really pushing the ex machina concept, but I think the twist at the end is emphasizing the thin line between creator and creation, do we really know which is which, ie the answer is not always black or white (hence the way they are dressed at the end..also black and white scenes could literally be the 'grey area' in this case. But I also think the fact their outfits change in the last scene implies a cycle or sorts. Idk but I kinda like that it was kept open-ended in this way.
