I think by the time you see the alien mirror Lena, she is as much the alien as the alien is her. I believe that's why the alien (while burning)went to touch Kane's body (as a goodbye) and then intentionally crawled into the center of the shimmer, so it could destroy it. There was now enough Lena in the alien to have a goal. The Lena that survived is forever changed and not dissimilar to fake Kane. They are now both creatures of the shimmer
