Okay I REALLY enjoyed this episode. Anyone else really starting to enjoy the show?

Also what do you guys think about the "cinematic look" and how that influences the show?

With how heavy the other dramas both of you are reacting to; Penthouse and Itaewon Class (not to mention the addition of Flower of Evil this month)... I agree that Imitation is a breath of fresh air! :)

Irving

the show honestly gets better and better

Malaki.H

Dojin kinda reminds me of bex idk why

Finally can use some of that knowledge I got from bts! Baepsae does mean Crow tit. Crow tit means someone is a try hard or trying so hard to fit in

I guess I subconsciously knew why I supported Kpop but after you said that it could be because we know it’s a hard life but the trainees and idols are mostly pursuing their passion and dreams to be on stage for others it makes them seem more grounded than some western artists who do it for the money. I was actually talking to my dad the other day about how we prefer to watch college football than the NFL because those college students are mostly playing for the love of the sport. Until recently athletes didn’t get paid and weren’t allowed to have sponsorship deals. Many of those athletes don’t even get drafted but try their best to sign a deal or even start off playing in the practice squad. As a true westerner that I am lol I like underdog stories and for those kids to go through that tough and grueling period of training for a slim chance to debut is admirable because I know I wouldn’t be able to do that. And for the kids that do it doesn’t get any easier but harder since so many groups debut each year it’s easy to get overshadowed which is why I try to discover as many new groups as I can but to support the kids. I’ll listen to their music but to watch variety content and stuff I just don’t have the time to do that but I want to do at least something by watching their music videos. There’s also hidden gems and I just love that feeling when you first discover a group or music.

I’m not super into analyzing the cinematography but I do enjoy how this drama was shot. It just looks good and plays into the dramatic zooms and framing. I kinda picked up that this drama wasn’t gonna take itself too seriously when they were practicing their lines for the historical movie in episode one. But I also watch a TON of kdramas and am used to the first couple episodes introducing a lot of stuff knowing the pay off will come much later. It’s VERY typical current romcom kdrama to me. I think the mix of old kdrama, new but serious content kdrama, and American drama style influences your view and confusion about the direction in the beginning. To me the drama went exactly the direction I thought it would after watching the first episode. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But this episode was hilarious and I laughed so much watching it the first time! Both your laughs are contagious btw 💕

You mentioned sasaengs getting jobs in industries where they can get close to idols in different/professional ways: yes. It actually has been proven to happen all of the time. It's part of why flight plans and phone numbers get leaked, part of it is ppl selling that info but also part of it is literal sasaengs in that field digging the information up and sharing it with their fellow sasaengs. It's probably part of why SK as a country is actually taking legal actions against sasaengs so fiercely now because with covid and all the other safety issues it builds up to be a national issue. God, reminds me of when ACE had their cars messed with in such a dangerous way that the cars could have blown up or lost control making them swerve into traffic. Thankfully someone saw their cars being messed with and called the cops but like, there car info and travel info was leaked by sasaengs.

Samantha

Oh and also the whole "standing guard" outside of the hotel room also happens all the time irl, not to mention the whole camping outside of their dorms as well. I believe NCT and Seventeen were the most vocal about "hey fuck off we live here and with covid it's extra dangerous for you to be crowding around where we live." It actually got to the point for The Boyz just like a month ago where a sasaeng actually BROKE INTO THEIR HOUSE and the members themselves had to be like you need to get the fuck away from us. I'm glad that Imitation is showing the more realistic side to fandoms and fandom culture even when it's ugly to see, but they're definitely still watering it down a bit.

Samantha

If you like the writing for Yunho's character I really have to suggest True Beauty to you, especially with liking a well written love triangle. That show and webtoon actually did a really good job of writing realistic, down to earth, and impactful characters, even the side characters were fully developed people rather than just characters/tropes. Not to mention that the acting is so well done and you'd get to see Astro's Eunwoo and SF9's Chani acting together in a drama !

RobotoMon

That pretty rabbit lady is JiSook of Rainbow! Another idol you might have not recognized

Sakura

God knows San is my bias since day one but I've got the worst second lead syndrome. I've tried to stay faithful but I've miserably failed. Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. Alexa, play 'baby don't like it' by NCT 127

rockthekazb0t

I vote for having one lighthearted romcom drama in the roster every "season" inbetween all these serious award winning dramas(bc they almost always are INTENSE in some way) - but I tend to watch those more than any other kdramas so I'm biased. 😅 I would love to see PD and Blaire check out Extraordinary You and True Beauty(EY first! because there are some Easter eggs in TB, as they share some of the same directors) -- and my still-longshot hope for the OG Dream High! 😆

BaoziBang

I love Jun really but everytime he plays the silly side of Ryeok I think of one of 2 things. That he is the Maknae of U-Kiss and couldn't even watch the MVs he was in because they were too raunchy or that he and one of his Group mates once talking with fans about porn for 20min on live. Seeing him this "innocent" freaks me a little bit out.

I think that knowing idols struggle is for sure and important factor since it makes them reliable and also what defines kpop fandom is not only admiration for their idols, but also the commitment to protect them. A lot of western fanbases grow because the artists sell an imaginary romantic relationship (Justin Bieber in the beginning, one direction...) and that exist for sure in kpop, but I think overall is more like a motherly love towards the idols. Also from what I've heard, trainee system is based in the Korean culture of effort, so the general public tends to support not only the talent, but the effort and struggle someone has gone thru. Even when Red Velvet Irene had her scandal a lot of people defended her out of pity because she was a trainee for five years and debuted "late". at the end of the day, to see someone handsome, rich and talented is not relatable, we need to know they've been thru a lot of shit to make us feel like "they deserve" to be there and to create and emotional connection with them.

Form of Therapy

Ima be honest I don’t know any of the Rainbow members other than Jaekyung and Woori, BUT GOOD FOR HER HECK YEAH

Kasey

Side note: Jongho comedic timing appreciation post.

Connor (Cyndr)

This episode was SO fun! I agree it seems to be settling into it's groove and the actors seem more comfortable now. Honestly some of my favorite rom-com scenes ever happened this episode.

Connor (Cyndr)

Anyone think that Jisook (the actress that plays the fashion lady) looks a bit like Oh My Girl's Arin?

Connor (Cyndr)

LOL Yeah the first episode she was in, I saw her and my brain went "Wait I didn't know Arin was in this, that's cool" and then had a double take cause clearly that's not Arin, they just have VERY similar facial features and general vibes

Edward Lee

you're like a soothsayer.....the a$$hole kid irl was actually a former BIGHIT trainee before BTS debuted so you're kinda right.......

Edward Lee

Also, thanks for the shoutout about Danny Ahn!

Kathy

I agree with this. While it’s arguable that more intense/plot carrying dramas are more engaging, more lighthearted dramas are very good at including lessons in between all the comedic scenes. Plus it’s a good break from watching a whole bunch of heavier dramas. I am also on board with them checking out Extraordinary You and True Beauty. Both are very good rom-coms with serious undertones. Of course, this may just me being biased since EY is one of my favourite drama.

rockthekazb0t

I was a tiiiiny bit disappointed in how EY ended(I wanted the Author mystery to be explored more among other things), but overall I loved that drama

Kathy

I have definitely noticed how the cinematography contributes to the mood of the drama. The colouring of the scenes are more on the neutral/dull side that contributes to the seriousness of the drama. The drama is definitely trying to take a more serious route given the what happens behind the scenes in the industry but sometimes fails to deliver. I love that the drama knows it won’t always be serious so random moments of comedy is always welcome. It’s also a good reminder that these are just regular humans who have been given a chance to do what they love.

Kathy

I was upset we never got to know how the Author worked in that world since there's no context about what goes on in real life like in W. I found the ending very bittersweet where realizations are made and life starts again.

rockthekazb0t

I really wished that drama was one of those 20 episode ones and not the usual 16 ep format, I think we just needed a liiittle bit more time to flesh out some storylines

Irving

Yessss I agree with this!!!!! Extra-ordinary you is literally my favorite drama

Wheezefest

I think the cinematography is intentional, and I like it for the most part because of the context of the show. As PD said, we know a lot about kpop culture and the dark side of it, and a lot of the topics in this drama are things that genuinely happen. With the sasaengs, the dating scandals, the shady CEOs, and other dark themes, the cinematography makes these situations feel less like a K-drama and more of an "imitation" of what goes on in the k-pop industry. Yes, there are quirky/cheesy moments, but it still comes across as slightly more realistic than the typical exaggerated portrayal you might see in a K-drama. Because of the camera work, serious topics evoke more emotions rather than being comical (as you said with the sasaeng girls), but light-hearted parts feel more like an accurate imitation of human emotions rather than of k-drama acting (other than the two main leads ig).

Ruth

Lol yeah that's exactly what I thought as well. He's super talented though. I keep watching his video from The Unit where he rapped. Maybe we should suggest that video for one of your guy group streams, PD!

Delphine Vdh

The blue haired Shax member (dojin I think) was a model at SM entertainment. His name is Yuri! You can find him in Luna's Free Somebody for example. But he decided that he wanted to become an idol and he participated in Produce X 101. He didn't make it into X1 but went quite far in the program.

BaoziBang (Tali)

Ouch. If I remember right then Kevin is 29 and Jun turned 24 in January. Btw, Jun is not only the Maknae of U-Kiss he was also in UNB.

onyx.

i highly agree, PD doesn't need to keep reacting to extremely intense & top tier kdrama all the time, light-hearted dramas like these should help have a diverse mood once in a while

Harley

It comes from the idiom "뱁새가 황새 따라가다 가랑이가 찢어진다" I think in earlier episodes they were translating it as Try Hard but I guess that specific translator just did the literal translation lol

Amanda Araujo

i didn't think too much about the look of the show but now that you mentioned yeah i think the cinematography really makes everything look more real and makes you feel more empathetic or more disgusted about the shit that happens and i totally thinks it's intentional because i feel like the show it's called imitation exactly because it's trying to imitate real life and portrait the things that we know it happens in the real idol culture and kpop industry but adding funny and cheesy moments in the middle to relieve more the tension and not feel too dark even tho it is because we know how shitty this industry can be
