IKRRR, ITS SO GOOD

Malaki.H

I gotta say though, the Jimmy kimmel performance didn't do it justice, unlike the performance video which is so freaking good

Rosella Macabulos

Am i the only one who cannot play/watch this video? 🤔..

Gabi 高书逸

They've really delivered this time with that choreo 😩👌

Camera and lights was terrible. The girls did well. Thankfully they are already confirmed for Inkigayo on Sunday!

Hans Olav

I couldnt put my finger on why I felt it was off, except for seeing the dancers behind Jennie during her verse, thanks for explaining. Its a pity thats its probably the only promotions we will get from them this time. Maybe a vlog?

fmsrivera

All I can say is, TRUE!!!

Animae

You said it well, PD. They butchered the choreo, the camera was off even the lights were dimmed we could barely see their faces. They didn't give justice to how good this choreo is. Good thing BLACKPINK released the dance performance before this show.

Oh this is the first time i watch both performances. And OMG the American media is sooo underprepared for K-pop. Most performances in there look soo underwhelming while the ones on the weekly music show look much better, but it's supposed to be the opposite. Even in the awards shows, you can feel that at best you feel it's like an inkigayo show.

You addressed most of the things that make this video bad (bad audio mix, inability to line up the shot, camera ops who don't know how to shoot anything that moves), but one thing that I think gets overlooked is that this studio space is absolutely not set up for this kind of performance. American talk shows build their studios around the idea that it's mostly going to be people talking at a desk & couch, and occasionally there will be a band performing who stays in one place. The performance space has almost no depth between the audience and the back wall, so the choreo is already having to be modified, plus you have to have space for the cameras and operators. On top of that, these spaces usually have only three cameras: two huge studio cameras and a boom camera. The studio cams are mounted on these giant wheeled podiums, are slow and cumbersome to move, and are tethered via a cable (meaning there's usually an assistant camera op to manage that, leaving even less space for BP). Then the boom is fixed in place (in Kimmel's case, on house left), and while it has a wide range of motion, it's designed for sweeping shots, not the kind of intricate camera choreo you need for K-pop performances. This whole thing was set up to fail from the beginning, and that's even before you get to the things that were fully controllable like the lighting choices and the video quality.

i love the choreo so much!!! it’s really pleasing to the eye

Guthwulf

Woah... I didn't expect to get a free lesson in video production and camera work :D The Shut Down choreography is my favorite as wel. I. already liked their Pink Venom Choreo. Having the backup dancers on stage allows for so much more dynamic choreo than just with the 4 members. But shut down was on yet another level. And yeah... he Jimmy Kimmel production was terrible...

The most off-putting thing about that Jimmy Kimmel stage was the weird angle that they picked. The cameraman didn’t even bother shooting the girls from the front. The whole time the camera was like this (its the most obvious during the individual parts of the members during the intro): (the girls) ———————- \\ \\ \\ \\ (camera) AND IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING TO WATCH because as long term KPOP fans, we know that there is a certain standard and way of shooting KPOP choreo and what are the key points in a choreo and the Jimmy Kimmel team just fucked it up. All because they couldn’t bother to respect a whole ass culture or rather even respect the artists themselves for a decent camerawork. ITS THREE MINUTES. Thank god the performance video exists to do the girls AND the choreo justice.

DreamyStateOfMind

Same, for me it says my account is not enabled to view it or video not existing... maybe it's because of location idk

fien

"you don't do a wide and center somebody" Thank you PD for explaining. I also didn't like the way the Jimmy Kimmel performance was shot but i didn't have the background to explain why. The lighting and audio were also really off. Imagine if we got the Jimmy Kimmel performance before the performance video... we would have been so disappointed with the choreo

Evelynn Lam

I absolutely LOVE the choreo for this song, def my favorite as well

Freya

What was that lighting??! I can barely see the girls

Emily G

Can't access the video. Shows I don't have permission.

Sasha K

i knew jimmie kimmel would be trash after i watched him do seventeen hot. it was unwatchable. seventeen and black pink deserve better

Tony Ngo

watch for Lisa's glove, they switch from red to black

Vish

They are going to inkigayo this week, there probably won't be any performances until next week unless YG drops one themselves but looking at their tight schedule I don't think there will be any. Last two years because of covid all the US performances were shot by the groups team itself,so I forgot how bad the western teams shoots these things when they go perform, lighting was so bad as well, it felt like they made no effort, shut down is second for me right after don't know what to do

Ebony Coco

This is my favorite BP choreo by far. It fits the song so well, and BP kills it when they do it. I think they're all more comfortable with this choreo than a lot of their past ones as well. Jisoo especially has been impressing me this comeback.

Réka O.

I think kpop ruined US-produced performances for me forever! Almost everything I see that was filmed there looks atrocious because I'm used to Korean quality now. The difference between these two videos could be used as an example to teach how to do a performance video properly. The second video was 🔥 though, I love the choreo and the song is growing on me more and more!

Hrathen

Twice's Cry For Me was shot better and the camera barely moved there. This was also on an American show

Faith

I think that was because it was probably filmed by a korean team. It was during the pandemic so twice also didn't travel to america to perform it live.

Paige

hey PD, some other people have mentioned it but it says that I don't have permission to view the content. It's not like the usual asking for a password thing.

Réka O.

It's been a problem since yesterday for some people. I added the direct Vimeo link under some other comments mentioning it, it should work that way

JUNO

CHOREO GOES OFFFFF

JUNO

720p quality triggered me also PD 😭😭😭

Lily

I also think the lightening was terrible.

Hans Olav

True, I always was so impressed with how good the Kelly Clarkson video was, but it was probably done in house or at least in Korea, so it makes sense.

Hey, so I know I’m 5 days late but Blackpink just released the inkigayo version of Shut Down and both the camera quality and the lighting are exceptional. It’s the performance we deserved to see on Kimmel.
