I kept this comment after your last reaction (before going on the small hiatus), because I didn't want to spoil anything about BABYMONSTER. I don't know if the reaction of yours gets its own post, so I'll write it here. I think this announcement video was actually recorded much later after the Last Evaluation. Like... I don't want to sound mean, I like the "YG Family speech", but it felt like: "I just have to give you a reason to make it feel like, I wasn't planning this the whole time... although I actually did..." Here's my idea how everything was recorded: At the very end of the last episode Yang Hyun Suk has Apple Watch Ultra, which were released last Fall and obviously the Last Evaluation didn't take place at that time and also I rewatched parts with him in the Last Evaluation and he didn't have them (because he even couldn't at that time). Because of his long sleeves in this announcement video it is not that visible, but I think he has Apple Watch Ultra as well. This whole Last Evaluation show is basically a survival show to get fans attached to them and although he truly wasn't lying at the time of recording it (that he wanted to eliminate some of them), after it was done, he knew he will just use that content for the marketing strategy, because he decided to keep all of them. There is also a video of all the members watching this announcement and I don't want to sound mean towards the girls, but my initial thought was: "Oh... this reaction will be scripted and they will be just acting“. But after watching that, I think there is a way how this whole "BABYMONSTER Preparation videos" were recorded, so nothing was initially meant to be fake. 1 year + something ago the Last Evaluation started. At that time Yang Hyun Suk truly wanted to keep just 5 of them. The recording ended somewhere in the middle/summer of 2022 (the moment when it ended isn't important that much). They let them train for a couple months more and then Yang Hyun Suk changed his mind, but that was at the time after the Apple Watch Ultra was released, Fall 2022 (that's why he has them at the end of the Last Evaluation, where he specifies the date of the final announcement, because that one scene of him talking could have been recorded even much later, because it is just him sitting there and based on this fact he was able to tell the exact date, which they couldn't really tell at the actual end of the recording of the Last Evaluation) and as I mentioned above he also has them during the final line up announcement). Actually the final scene of him speaking in the Last Evaluation could have been recorded even in 2023, since he says there just a few sentences. But the final line up announcement was recorded at the end of 2022. Then they let the members react to that video, so their reaction wasn't scripted. And then they recorded Dream (Pre-debut song), which is included at the end of the Last Evaluation as a background music. And when they announced their debut at the very end of 2022, they just decided to make it as a survival show is in case of Stray Kids or Pentagon Maker, where they kept all of them after all.

I honestly can’t tell when anything regarding The Last Evaluations were filmed. Because that Jenny from the Block dance has a brunette Haram. The Introduction video we got to Haram had interview portions of her blonde and their reaction to the final member selection have her blonde too but she’s been brunette IRL for a minute. I don’t think she was blonde when the video dropped WHICH MEANS the girls have known for some period of time and YG really “pranked” them and they had to then keep it a secret.

Divine Oladejo

yeah i thought the same has you because if you notice some members had already changed ages than what was shown in the viedo also the trainee years are also off at the time the viedo was posted in may so i would say that the annoucement viedo was probbaby filmed between ending of last year to maybe even jaunary to early feburary before chiquita birthday. also you can hear the predebute song at the end of ep 8 so yeah

Divine Oladejo

the jenny from the block viedo is not recent but an old viedo, you can see a clip of it in the last elvuation trailer. also i think the interview portion were filmed after the last elvuation so they can get their input on how they felt at that time and for it not to be too much on them they didnt do the interview immediately after secenes took place so that everyone was calm

Two things I wanted to keep in a separate comment one is about BABYMONSTER units and second one is about YG's Thai joint venture (and The Black Label's as well... Lisa has had a really big impact on YG!!). He mentioned: "various unit activities"... beside my idea of moving two members to The Black Label girl group, I had a theory that YG could have possibly made a similar situation as they did originally with Treasure. To have 2 groups working both together and on their own. But obviously it would be weird to have 5 members and then just 2 members. So after Yang Hyun Suk mentioned he had 5 members in his mind, I threw the idea away. But my initial idea was to have two teams/units of 3 and Ahyeon being in both of them as the 4th member. As for example: Asa, Chiquita, Rora & Ahyeon. Ruka, Pharita, Haram and & Ahyeon. So I am curious if we get something like this. Based on his words. The second thing is... he knew he will keep all of them, so he had to mention the other girl groups on purpose to let people know they are coming. I am not sure if we really get a new YG girl group sooner than it is usual for YG, but I hope the Japan-based group is really a thing! And beside that... I found out in May 2021 YGMM was created, which is a joint venture between GMM Gramy (apparently the biggest or one of the biggest Thai entertainment companies) and YG Ent. (51% owned by GMM Grammy and 49% by YG Ent.). They already made castings... so... you know... just saying... we should keep an eye on that. And also Teddy did similar thing with The Black Label! In a collaboration with CP Group (one Thai conglomerate) they created their joint venture called The Black SEA (as South East Asia). So... I think both YG and The Black Label are preparing to debut groups (both boy and girl groups, because of castings being for both) and artists based in Thai a lot!

My opinion about Yang Hyun Suk’s choices:

Ahyeon - Yeah, there is nothing to add there. That was one of the pretty sure members to make it. Ruka - When he said: „Japanese member“, I assumed it will be Asa, but since I considered Asa as the other „pretty sure member to make it“, I was glad Ruka made it! Chiquita - I talked about her in the previous videos. It would be really weird move from YG not to include her in this group… Haram - Before the Last Evaluation I would have been surprised by this decision, but after watching it, I understand he decision. Although at this point I was still assuming Asa is the last member, so I was a bit sad Pharita didn’t make it… Pharita - His reasoning was really interesting, because based on her language skills I chose her over Haram, when I was deciding for the line up of 5. And also I couldn’t believe Asa didn’t make it, but we will get to that… Asa Being Excluded - In the previous videos I mentioned that the only reason why they would promote all of them so much and then eliminate some of them, would be the case that those 2 members would be moved to The Black Label girl group to create an interesting connection between these two groups as Enhypen and &Team have. And well… it wasn’t The Black Label girl group, but actually the same case as Enhypen and &Team, because apparently YG is preparing basically the same thing as &Team is (Japan based group aiming on the global market), but as a girl group. And in this case we have to think about Asa as an upcoming all-rounder and core of a group as Ahyeon is. Asa proved in the Last Evaluation that she can get to the level of Ahyeon and even surpass her, because her rap and dance skills are already better than Ahyeon’s, so to have this kind of member in the Japan based group is basically a must and it makes perfect sense why Yang Hyun Suk was thinking about it in this way (before changed his mind and decided to air the Last Evaluation to get people hyped up for all of them, as I mentioned in the previous comment of mine under this post) Rora Being Excluded - She was the one I chose myself, so I get that. Also I am curious if we get a new YG girl group soon, based on his words. Like for example in 2-3 years. Because keeping Rora for another girl group, which will debut in 7 years, would be a bit dumb… About his reasoning to keep all of them - I wrote a separate comment here. Here I’ll add one thing about Chiquita… I don’t know how I feel she is learning to rap. Like good for her, but first… I like Asa and Ruka as the rappers, because of their natural hip hop passion, but I know… Ahyeon is also more of the „assigned rapper“, but in the case of Chiquita I like she was really vocally focused, because it didn’t feel like she is just „younger Lisa“, because Lisa is the rapper of BLACKPINK.
So I hope they will not make Chiquita even more like „the younger Lisa“, because although I understand why people say that, I think she will (and already is) able to get her own charm. Since I was highly invested in everything around BABYMONSTER, I knew/assumed it will be all 7 of them after all (like man… I got really deep into this, I am not into pre-debut content in general, but this really got me interested, so I wanted to gather as much informations as possible).
But from the producer’s point of view I could imagine them being just 5 of them, but at the end of the Last Evaluation I couldn’t choose between Haram and Pharita to be the 5th member (Rora being the only one I was able to eliminate), so basically my position in this situation changed more less the same as in yours, PD Hyuk…

As you brought up LOUD. LOUD started on the 5th of June 2021 (I remember this date as the date of discovering Koki), so it was 2 years ago, but it ended in September 2021. Team JYP didn't really win. I mean... it wasn't really like a true competition, but if it was Team P Nation would have won, because they won 2 out of 3 live rounds (Team JYP won only the last one). Also... Yoon Min left JYP like 2 months ago (I found out about that yesterday...) there were already speculations that JYP might add member(s) to the Team JYP line up (which I didn't like because it is not fair to the eliminated members of Team JYP), but now after Yoon Min's departure I feel like it is more than sure that there will be new members.

For me the "golden era" of YG was during BIGBANG and 2NE1, because I wasn't aware of Kpop during the true old school YG as you are talking about in the video. But I really like to dig deep down the Kpop history and when I found out about that era of YG... MAN! I envy you so much you were able to witness that! I listen to their YG Family albums a lot and those songs are bangers! When I said in another comment here that Yang Hyun Suk just needed to say something as the reason for his decision, I meant it like he couldn't say fully he planned that from the beginning, but I believe he meant those words about YG Family and those words were not made up. To say something about his situation from the past couple years. Yeah... he didn't end up in prison after all and I don't want to get into big discussions about this or about that history of YG in general, because that's not really a topic to talk about under a video of BABYMONSTER and also that discussion will get really long. But even if he didn't commit any crime on his own, he was aware of everything. Which can get tricky and I understand there are situations, where you cannot just get away from everything at a certain point, but we cannot deny that he knew even about Burning Sun and whole SeungRi shit... But we cannot really see fully into that, so I don't want to judge his whole personality just on that... But the only thing, which is kind of "ehh" for me is that he paid Han Seo Hee (former YG trainee, who was providing illegal substances for T.O.P and B.I and then snitched them) for escort services. Both in the way of paying with money or providing tickets to concerts, vacations etc. I would not mind that... like it's his life after all, but he is married and he has children... so based on that my attitude towards him is: Business-wise, no problem. He's really a master mind. But on the personal level? Well, I don't want to judge him purely based on the informations from the media. But the thing with Han Seo Hee was proved by himself at the court, because she was at first trying to make it like he was threatening her, so he provided their messages to make it clear that she was actually offering herself in a way and she was also glad for the gifts she got and based on that he admitted she provided sex services to him

WiseSmellyLegs

I hope this is the last comment here. About BLACKPINK... well... Yang Hyun Suk definitely played his role in their creation, but I see BLACKPINK as Teddy's group. So it is hard to say what they had in mind with BLACKPINK. Obviously they did not expect they will get to this level as they are now. So I agree the situation is similar with BTS and HYBE creating groups here and there. But my take is that Teddy was preparing his The Black Label girl group (The Black Label was created like 10 months before their debut), which was BLACKPINK and since he was 2NE1's producer there are similarities between these two groups, but YG for some reason decided to stop doing anything with 2NE1 after Park Bom's scandal, so they decided to take BLACKPINK from Teddy to make them as their girl group instead of 2NE1. Also that might have been the reason why the final line up got smaller, because YG might have wanted to make it save, so they could continue on the popularity 2NE1 had built. Also one correction... BLACKPINK wasn't YG's 2nd girl group but 3rd (everybody forgets about Swi.T - the first YG girl group, which disbanded after one album, because Yang Hyun Suk's future wife was in the group and he didn't want them to get too much popular, so she wouldn't find someone else... 😅😅) (In the very last minutes of your video you are basically describing the key thing and reason why survival shows/pre-debut documentaries like this are created. Nothing against Treasure, but the reason why you feel the way you feel is because of the journey you went through with them. In another examples you named, you got to them without knowing anything before (I assume you didn't watch the BIGBANG pre-debut documentary) I feel... not the same, but similar, I guess? I mean... I spent 3 hours watching your reaction and pausing it to write my thoughts 😅😅... Like I cannot compare BABYMONSTER to BIGBANG and 2NE1. But although the racio in me was telling me that 5 members would make sense, I wanted them to debut together after all. Basically the same as you said.)

-- Something that I found really interesting about BLACKPINK (as a blink, and as the group who brought me into kpop) is that I read somewhere that YG wanted them to be his version of Girls Generation. Before Blackpink was formed, they were called Pink Punk and had some stellar vocalists. 10 members with Jennie as the leader and other rappers aside from her and Lisa. Then things happened, the lineup changed and we were left with 4, along with a change in group name and concept (only one main vocalist remained from the original 10). -- That got me thinking about how other groups were formed with the intentions of copying their successor and then adding their own spin onto it. Somebody said &Team is to Seventeen, what Enhypen is to BTS. Specifically, I mean the intention behind structuring the group, because all of the groups I mentioned have their own individual colour. -- The only thing I could compare Babymonster to is...what if they're like the mini-girl version of EXO? Exo is known for their flawless vocals but a lot of their songs lean heavily on the vocal side because there's only two rappers: Chanyeol and Sehun, which I think might be the case for Babymonster. I'm not saying YG is trying to craft them into any particular group but when I think about the type of music that Baemon could release, the only other group who comes to mind is Exo. They both have fantastic vocalists, 2-3 rappers, and despite them looking like they wouldn't fit together, they have good synergy. -- Another two groups who I think are similar? Straykids and Nmixx, mmixx is like the girl version of them (the type of songs they release) but with more focus on vocals instead of rap. I'm starting to see a pattern where 4th gen groups are quite similar to their successors; however, with Baemon I feel like they could put out Exo-style songs because Haram and Rora are practically made for R&B slow songs and they have multiple members who can hit high notes.

Looking forward to your reaction to Babymonster's reaction to the announcement. :D We fans didn't change his mind. He purposefully created an environment where fans would get attached and rally behind all 7 to "defend" them against YG, so YG could "listen" to fans making us fans part of this project ("these are the members you chose"). That was the whole idea behind this marketing campaign and why they introduced / build the hype the way they did. The result: Babymonster has a very passionate fanbase, their videos get tens of millions of views and they already had a #1 Billbord song, all of that before debut and without selling a single album. This "announcement" video (as well as the member reaction and parts of the introduction interviews) was filmed after last evaluation but before end of last year (and starting the marketing campaign this way). One of many signs: Chiquita became 14 in february, Ruka became 21 in march, Asa became 17 in april and Ayheon became 16 in april. So if this was filmed in april/may, then why use their wrong (old) ages? ;) All of this doesn't make it bad, its "just" impressive marketing. It also doesn't mean that he wasn't genuine with his reasoning or anything seen where "fake", it just was filmed a while ago and edited purposefully for the marketing campaign. Of course regardless of what is true, the 7 members still are insanely talented, very charming and have great chemistry with each other. So I'm happy for them and as a fan now root for them to be successful.

Guthwulf

I find it funny with YG and his plans. With Blackpink he wanted to make a big group more in line with Girls Generation or Twice, but then recognized that just the 4 that we have now are the perfect combination (because of how they work with each other and because of their close friendship). This time he thought he had learned his lesson and aimed for a smaller group (5 members because dance choreography is easier for 5 than 4) but ended up with a big group. I respect, that he is open to change his mind when its better for the group but we can safely assume by now, that whatever YG plans regarding group size, the opposite will be true :D

WiseSmellyLegs

About their hair colors, well... it's get tricky, but we have to keep in mind that technically they could change their hair color even within a week, so it is hard to tell based on that

Rebecca Le Minh

I can't wait to watch all of this after work!!!

WiseSmellyLegs

Interesting thought. But I guess you can say this about any generation after all. For example GOT7 was heavily inspired by 2PM. Super Junior is a group from which SM used some ideas for their upcoming groups as well. Like having subgroups in general or having a subgroup, which started their career with language versions of the main group. Then you have 2NE1 and BLACKPINK... I’m thinking about your comparison to EXO 🤔🤔 Well, we have to keep in mind that Ahyeon will rap as well and apparently Chiquita too, which makes it more than a half of the group rappers… They will definitely be really vocally focused group, but unlike EXO they will have a lot rappers even if we compare it not just to the whole number of members in EXO, but just based on the number of members in BABYMONSTER.

Phani

I just wanna say the master lists are soooooo smart because yes I have notifications turned on but this is so much easier than going through all my emails. Hope you’re having a good month!

gen a *

Yes, you could say that about any generation! I just think it's really interesting to consider. As for my comparison to Exo, Babymonster does have a rapper advantage (if I recall correctly they have 4) but I have a feeling that their music will still lean heavily on vocals. If that's the case, they would be perfect for Eco-style music. I'm excited to see if they really will have sub-units like YG said he was planning on doing.

WiseSmellyLegs

I was thinking about those units again and he might have meant it like formations for b-sides rather than really a sub-group with its own album and promotions. Basically there is a chance we will get songs like VolKno by Treasure, where only a few members based on their positions/skills will take a part.

aidrou

I want to second the comment about the master lists. Your Patreon is very organised and every video is properly tagged by the name of the group or the show, it is not the case with some other Patreon creators and it makes consuming the content so much harder. I want to compliment you in that since it probably consumes quite enough additional time with uploading.

Samy

You guys briefly commented about Hybe + Disney+ on ITS Friendcation so I’d love if you guys can react to J-Hope and Suga’s documentary on their, it’s great and gives you a real insight.

Pika Pika

Hi PD, I was wondering if you were aware of WeverseCon that happened over the weekend. There were some tremendous performances from Le Sserafim, ENHYPEN, TXT, &team and more. You should definitely watch them, even if it’s just for yourself.

Alexia

Please could you re- upload SVT Game cateres first episode.
