This might be the best anime I've ever watched in terms of just pure ARTISTIC value. Their ability to capture emotions and big ideas with such simple shot choices and directing is PHENOMENAL.

Obviously haven't watched the reaction yet but I already agree with what you said HAHAHA. Haikyu is just that good

Haikyuu has really masterful visual and literary symbolism. Through visual moments, character names and roles, and written lines, those aspects all combine to make this manga/anime is the most visceral "visual poem" I can think of

The manga is a masterpiece. I really really highly recommend reading the manga if you were ever interested. It’s a whole different experience. There are shots/moments in the manga that I say are even better than the anime. But for the most part, the anime is very faithful to the source material. There’s also a line in here that directly correlates to something in the future that I just realized and it absolutely destroyed me wow I love Haikyuu 🥹

Anyone who played sports growing up will watch haikyuu and cry bc it’s so real, the author and the animation tap into that emotion of playing and it’s been been years but I’m still brought to tears These stories are so recognizable and when you’ve been on both sides, losing and wining, apathetic and passionate across a competitive sports career, it just does something to your heart that I think the story does an excellent job of capturing and presenting to even those that didn’t play volleyball or even sports

Haikyuu episode 16: "Winners and Losers" is my favorite episode in the whole show and one of my favorite stories of all time. It's a really sad and beautiful focus on the reality of competitive sports at a high school level. Every person in this show is the main character of their experience and so many of these players are fighting to win but maybe weren't blessed with talent or luck or missed their opportunities to work harder because they didn't get the right motivation until it's too late. It's really sad that these teams found that motivation so late, as this experience probably will never come again. What makes this even more interesting is the contrast they lay out of that experience vs Hinata's fresh hope and eagerness he gets from his first win. It almost feels disrespectful and wrong to cheer for him, but you understand how important this first win is for him both for his growth as a naïve rookie and it solidifies when Ikejiri asks them to win and Hinata seems to get some sort of understanding of the responsibility they have as winners to make the teams they beat proud to have fought hard against them, that it wasn't in vain. This episode has so many layers to it and every time I rewatch it I peel another layer back. Today my empathy really hit hard and I actually cried watching the loser montage and thinking about how frustrated these players are. It's also just a really good reminder not to take opportunities for granted and to give more of myself to my hobbies (I struggle a lot with motivation and I'm not at all self-driven so I tend to drop stuff or slack off if it feels useless or I have no one externally motivating me). This show is actual therapy and I love it so much even if I naturally resist the lessons I'm learning from it on every watch through lol

The manga definitely captures the same emotion and cinematic feeling from anime but obviously not always in a 1 to 1 way—the author puts a lot of care into all the aspects and you will still get chills reading it

winners and losers is one of my favorite episodes from this season, they also introduce one of my top3 soundtracks in the show lol, i use it to read manga a lot because it's so frikin emotional. loved the commentary as always, and yes pd the manga also portrays the beauty/emotion and symbolism, i feel like some shots/panels are even more beautiful in the manga but, the sound design of the anime takes it to a whole different level, i would even dare to say that it's one of the best in anime, adds to the narrative of the show SO MUCH, istg, and since the story is so character driven it makes it even more special in my opinion

This is one of the reason haikyuu is my favourite anime. Like it doesnt even feel like an anime sometimes because they give you such real and raw feelings through the stories. The way they acknowledge about the losing teams is amazing. Most of the time when you watch this kind of 'fights' all we really care is about the protag, but haikyuu really made you sympatise with all the extras, making you know they are part of the whole story as well and not just there for no reason. Its the best thing about haikyuu where they will give you a peek into the story to every little character, wether they are the focus or not.

I've been rewatching the whole series and while I can't wait for you guys to see how these kids come together to form a beautiful group, I also want you to take it slowly and savor all the little things it has. Above all, it's the kind of show that comforts you. There will always, always be a line, an image, an interaction that resonates with you.

This show truly is top tier and my favorite anime! And the story and the animation and the characters only get better and better!!!

Irie

“A love letter” truly depicts the episode so well. I have never thought of it in that way, but when you said it… I got chills. As a former athlete, these episodes resonate deep in my soul. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I always love hearing both of your insights. Can’t wait for the next episodes!

Rewatching Haikyuu with you guys makes me always so emotional! To your remark about "I wish I would live in Japan[...]where Volleyball is this lit." Any (high) school sport in Japan is treated like its professional counterpart and any high school sport anime you will watch will convey that which it's why sports anime make the sport feel so intense and euphoric at the same time. Also if you want another recommendation for a sports anime with this kind of shot choices and directing I would REALLY recommend you Tsurune which is about japanese Archery (Kyūdo) and it has currently 2 seasons, 1 OVA (in between) and a sort of recap movie of season 1. The seasons are written in a way that it always rounds up well since the studio wasn't sure if the show gets greenlit for another season so even if it's not finished and the rest of the lightnovels will be animated, the season finish in a way that leaves you satisfied like youth sports always does.

Kim Chi

Also yes it is a "love letter" to the sport and the people who love it. Probably because the mangaka used to play middle and high school volleyball so this might be his way to pay tribute to all the joy and hardships that come with school volleyball and school sports in general.

(Btw, Aoba Johsai/Seijoh literally means "Blue Castle" - that's why they have a certain "dignity" whenever they appear. Oikawa (or, as Hinata calls him, "The Great King") shares his birthday with Alexander the Great.)

Haruka

It's weird i know but i love every single cheer from the other teams. Like "Go go Date Tech" is literally sitting on a room and chilling in my brain :D
