It's not a popular episode as you have seen. I admit that I haven't watched it very often since it was first broadcast because I always remember it as not being very good. But I think I'm just remembering the rather clunky CGI special effects when Lazarus finally turns into the monster which rather spoils the enjoyment of the story and the concepts. The stuff about Martha's family and the development of the relationship is handled really well. And the stuff about trying to gain eternal youth is interesting too. I just wish it had looked a bit better on screen. I think The Doctor is impressed by Martha's bravery and that is one of the reasons why he wants her to travel more with him. Hopefully, by the time you read this you will be feeling fit and healthy again!

I think it is better than the IMDB rating: a mad scientist, a failed experiment and a scorpion/spider life-sucking monster. Why not? The Doctor and Martha have a fun run-around, Francine slaps the Doctor, the Doctor and Martha have a chat and decide to go off for another adventure. I like the "turn this up to 11" line. The CGI is weird - although the monster has a human face it doesn't look much like Professor Lazarus - and it breaks me out of the episode. I don't have a problem with a scorpion/spider monster or even a scorpion/spider monster with a human face like the Empress of the Racnoss. It's just this particular design. The monster doesn't seem feasible. How does it suddenly get so much bigger than the original Lazarus? Also, big heavy things don't scurry about on mirrored ceilings - they fall off. Mark Gatiss (Professor Lazarus) is a long-term fan of Doctor Who. He has been a writer on the new show - although not some of your favorite episodes ("The Unquiet Dead", "The Idiot's Lantern"). He was also involved in the Sherlock series.
