On this video we will look at 3 types of shields that were extremely popular in either Classical antiquity, the Viking Age and the Middle Ages and we'll discuss why. This was originally a Members only video on YouTube, but now those videos are being migrated here and mirrored, so you can watch them without having to also pay a membership on YouTube. Moreover, this is more of a remasters, meaning that contrast and color correction have been retouched, and I've added extra commentary on it for you.

Thank you so much and enjoy!

Amazing video as usual. Loved the comparisons and demonstrations. I'd have to say kite shields are my favorite. Video games have definitely influenced my decision but I love the look of them and they were quite versatile. Norse shields are definitely a close 2nd though.

For me, as a woman, Roman shield seems truly beautiful; it's artistic and can cover your entire body. I also love learning about its performance on the battlefield and the world of weaponry. But I'm not objective because I'm still learning about this world, having only recently started 😅 Thank you!

I have a special place in my heart for Norse shields (maybe biased since I live in the Baltics, but they just have that special something for me). Bucklers I have always considered to be hilarious (I know they’re small because they’re meant to be more dynamic, but I can’t get over it—they’re so tiny! 🥹)

Is this is an old video? It looks it but glad you released it. And that blue looks great. I was corrupted, I like the Spartan shield, the hoplon. Though even knowing many simply had a bronze rim, I still like them.

I agree with Florencia, I'm a small woman and think this would cover me well, however, would it be more cumbersome. Hopefully I will never be put to the test!

He mentions that yes, it's old but has some color correction and other tweaks to improve video quality.

I think it would depend upon the situation. Roman shield technology is designed to work for overall protection of the entire unit. Normans, Vikings, and Knights, even in battles, typically fought in a series of duels, and often acted less as units than as individual tanks. And the type of shield choice should reflect the type of armor worn. IMHO, FWIW. That's my two copper pennies, anyway.

Love the costume. Athentic arming jacket with... ... jogging rousers!
