How protective was this armor? I have read of some accounts the Dacians did a number on it?

It was very protective for the time. The Dacians dealt damage on the heads, which the Romans solved by adding two cross rims of iron at the top of the helmet to reinforce it, and on the striking arms, so the Romans used Manica after that. The Dacians didn't pierce segmentatas.
