It really does matter differently depending on what sort of time period you are reenacting, and to think carefully in conjunction with what sort of gear you plan to have. Lots of reasons I prefer the lorica hamata. Segmentata armor, when made to fit properly is quite expensive, and the cheap ones look it very much so. I've found mail is much more forgiving-both on fit, and on wear against the cingulum. Other time periods will have totally different priorities. Portraying highland Scots, the big kicker is a woollen belted plaid in appropriate colors. Too bright, or dark, and it doesn't look authentic. Made out of thin polyester or (heavens forbid)cotton, it looks silly and insubstantial.
