the “forget it jake, it’s cloud town” line is a reference to the ending line of the 1974 film chinatown - i never got the reference until i watched chinatown in a college film class. i just know the writer who thought of that bit was so proud of themself haha

Ida Lisby

Oh you just made my sunday night 🤩 an absolute favorite! My son (11) learned the intro piano piece from watching the movie ❤️

Desiree Mclaughlin

Yay! I’ve been waiting for this one! One of my favorite Pixar movies.

One of the things I think is really cool is that Joy is in charge in Riley's head, but when we enter mom & dad's head, they have a different hierarchy. Anger is running things for the dad, and Fear is in charge for mom. It really showcases how different people process their emotions, and even though we all have the full spectrum, different people have different emotions at the forefront of most of their interactions.

Not the foot up her a** 😂

I love this movie so much!!

I do really love how smart and wonderful this movie is kind of making joy the villain if she had just let Riley be sad in the beginning. A lot of that wouldn't have happened and that is like us. If we just stop trying to force ourselves to be happy and let the sadness in when it comes, we can avoid a lot of problems like anger and fear taking over and I sob for at least 30 minutes every time bing bong goes away because we have to grow up and let some things go and that's always sad to think about

This movie is sooo good I’m so glad you reacted to it and hope you’ll get to the sequel when it’s available as well 🙏🏼

I love Bing Bong with my entire being 🤗🥺 Sadness is a whole mood, I can really relate to her 😅

I think it’s so cool how this movie has given people the vocabulary to express and communicate complicated otherwise feelings and concepts! Also I have a very specific memory of this movie from when I was a teenager in secondary school (middle school in the US?) - **trigger warning I guess? just don’t read the first paragraph the rest is fine :)** My secondary school had a concerning amount of problems with mental health related things (bullying, alot of s*lf-h*rm, yearly s**cides, ext..). So instead of actually providing resources or support, a couple times a year they would do assemblies with entire year groups/grades about well-being. In one of these we had to watch Inside Out. I remember had already seen it at some point when I was a couple years younger and couldn’t remember enjoying it so being a teenager I felt like just sitting in silence and watching a movie with about 100 kids plus teachers would be boring and pointless. However watching the movie for the first time after childhood had “ended” in a room full of adolescents, most of whom keep all their emotions and worries locked away with little to no way of communicating or expressing them, was a completely different experience. Usually when watching or doing anything in school there would be constant chatting, people messing about, getting told off, laughing and just general teenage chaos. Watching this movie, the energy in that room couldn’t be described as anything other than heavy. The entire hall was silent, especially throughout the second half of the movie. I remember my friends sitting either side of me and I was trying not to cry but not wanting to draw any attention to myself I just stared at the back of the seat in front of me. Nobody was talking or even looking at each other, everyone was just sitting still either with their eyes on the screen or just staring at the floor. There were a few that did end up getting visibly emotional but nobody talked about it. Even though it was obvious that everyone was feeling similarly, still nobody wanted or knew how to talk about it so they just… didn’t? The way I described it seems like a lot but the memory isn’t sad, I just think it vividly captures the weird specific emotional dynamics with teenagers / adolescents.

No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always break at "Take her to the moon for me"

Love this movie! Such a great introduction to mental health for kids. Can't wait for the sequel! You should react to Elemental. It was so good and has a lot of deeper themes too. I think Pixar's goal is always to see how many times they can make the audience cry lol

Tanya

With a Riley of my own that’s now 17, this film never fails to make me cry and laugh. The best combo.

spent the whole movie sobbing like i always do, loved your reaction even if you didn't say that much. This movie is sooooo good

anxiety is going to be one of the emotions in the sequel!!and they’re played by maya hawke aka robin from stranger things! also my therapist actually brought up this movie in my last session saying they did consult with real mental health experts!

Danielle

I love this as well. I remember reading an article when this movie came out about how Riley’s emotions are mixed genders, while her mom’s emotions are all female and her dad’s emotions are all male. Some theorized this could foreshadow Riley having gender dysphoria when she gets older.

Danielle

I get teary eyed at many points in the film, but Bing Bong’s sacrifice always unleashes the waterfall of tears. I was obsessed with this movie when I was in high school and it helped me understand myself better. The writing is just phenomenal and the story is deeply relatable to audiences of all ages. I am so glad you reacted to this. Thank you for opening up about learning to embrace your own sadness.

Kenneth Tong

Commenting this cuz you also react to music, but what really gets me is how deep and comforting the sound was when Sadness finally presses the button on the board, and in complete contrast, how light and hopeful the sound was when Joy presses it afterwards. It really feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest.

i struggle with depression and always felt so sick of my own sadness and wanted it to go away...and then my medication made it all sort of fade and i realized i actually missed feeling my emotions. i feel like this movie's message of "sadness" being as crucial as the other emotions is so important for kids AND adults to understand.

Alanna Smith

i know there another inside out movie coming out which toouches on anxiety, envy, puburity, etc

Giu

it's the way I cry every single time with Bing bong

Giu

isn't it sadness running mom's?

Meagan

You're probably right! I wrote my comment off the top of my memory after finishing the entire video, not during that part 🙂

Kim L

Watching this while in the middle of a 2 months long (so far) depressive episode hits so different

JT

I love this film so much. Got me crying all over again. The sequel is going to be so amazing to see these emotions as Riley ages! Another Pixar film you should definitely put on your list is 'Elemental'! Beautiful film through and through too!

Paige

Rewatching this before I take my niece to the sequel tomorrow. Am not emotionally equipped to watch this alone at the moment so I’m very grateful I have you to watch it with 😂

Abby King

Ahhh this is such a good movie! I hope you watch the sequel!

Tracy Everette

I really enjoyed watching this with you, one of my favorite movies! I can't wait for you to do the second one, I think it's even better than the first, and the addition of anxiety is so perfectly portrayed.

"Joy" shouldn't make up all of your memories, regular or core memories, that is not healthy or natural, yet Joy is so controlling that all of Riley's core (personality building) memories and almost all of her regular memories are "joyful." Joy is absolutely the villain in this movie! She is so overbearing and controlling and looks down on the other emotions but is especially heinous to Sadness! Just as it would be unhealthy for a person to be 100% sad or angry all of the time, it is extremely unhealthy and toxic to be obsessively "joyful" 100% of the time! The scene where Joy tries and massively fails to cheer up Bing Bong after his rocket is taken to the with toxic "joyfulness" and then Sadness has to come in and let him cry through the pain before proves this point perfectly! In this movie, when they move across country and Riley has to leave behind everything she knows as an 11 year old, that is hella emotional, and the strongest emotion in that scenario would be Sadness, which is why Sadness feels like she is having a breakdown, Riley needs her the most right now but Joy is suppressing her more than all the other emotions. The mom was not helping either by encouraging Joy to suppress all the other emotions, especially Sadness, when she had that talk with Riley about staying their "happy girl" and how they should "keep smiling." The memories turning sad when she touches them makes sense, because when you think of something that once made you happy, but you have lost, it becomes a sad memory. And the control panel turning grey and not responding to any of the other emotions is a perfect example of severe depression, which makes you numb to emotions and the 1st one to finally get through that numbing depression is Sadness!
