This is one I've been wanting to make for months. I explain in the video why I didn't make it sooner (it's my own damn fault) but I kept worrying that I wouldn't ever get to make it at all. It's not the wildest machine in the quick start series by a long shot, but I would call it the best machine by a wide margin. Enjoy!

(accidentally labeled this as quick start 8 at first for some reason lol)

(oh my god it IS episode 8. how did I mess this up twice)

OMG new quick start episode! This is one of my favorite series you've ever done I'm so excited

Jacob Alexander Tice

I've been waiting for more Quick Start. This series is your best work.

Hey Gravis, I hope you're doing well friend. Thanks for the video.

Travis Noble

Hey Gravis, I just recently learned about Windows Sideshow and I think it would make a great topic for your Quick Start series (or maybe Quick Start Gaiden). Thanks for another great video!

Danny Forche

I bought a laptop for university in 2009, and the screen was 1680x1050. Yeah it was kinda high end but I think they did have those for anything but the absolute garbage, e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision type small business laptops and not your Inspirons

_Pai

You briefly mentioned that you can have a flash drive in the left USB port and have it recognized by both devices and that's pretty wild that they allowed you to do that. Swapping back and forth between operating systems without unmounting the drive sounds like a recipe for disk corruption.

Danny Forche

For your demonstration of how the crappy built in speakers don't switch OSes, you never actually switched to Android, it was on Windows the whole time. Not sure if that was intentional

cathoderaydude

It was, because you can hear both sound sources mixed together

Danny Forche

Oh, huh, I thought you were just groaning because of how bad the speakers were. I didn't notice that

Danny Forche

Still watching the video - yeah, there was no built in file app until much later, like after I had switched to Samsung and there was a (IMO) much better file manager that isn't bloatware like Google's. Been using Android since version 2.0 in 2010 an I definitely had to install an app from the Android Market (old name for Play Store) to see my files. The one I used to use was called Astro File Manager until they started adding ads to it and making you pay to get rid of them, go figure. Before I started using Samsung, I used Motorola phones and Motorola just...did not make their own custom apps. It was stock Android without anything stock Android didn't have, which included a file manager and the ability to screenshot (you read that correctly) prior to Android 4.0 Edit: I'm surprised you didn't remark at the phrase "wireless abortion" because that's certainly an odd choice of words

William O'Connell

Great video as always. Are you still planning to do one about the "VideACE InstantVidgets" product that you hinted at in the introduction of the series? I assume there's no much to say about it but the name alone seems completely hilarious.

Danny Forche

Last comment, I promise. The Play Store working/not working is a bit of a weird one - Google put all its eggs in the "Google Play Services" basket some time ago (not sure when, it was definitely after 4.0 came out) and it's now required to be updated in order for the store to work. The good part about this is that in almost every version of Android that supports it, Play Services auto-updates by design, and updates the SSL certs with it so the store will continue to work - but the bad part is if for some reason it doesn't update properly, the store won't work. So my guess is when you first put your tablet online, the play services were massively outdated so the store just kept crashing while it was trying to update itself in the background. But eventually after being on for long enough it updated without you knowing, and now it works. I can't explain the crashes when you try to search for an app though, that one is weird. But I've definitely still had working play stores on Android 4, 5, 6 devices because of how they set it up. Kinda like how the App Store still works on ancient iDevices even now. You just run into the same issue with apps not being supported anymore But unlike Apple, Google didn't force developers to recompile their applications in 64-bit, so there's plenty of old stuff that hasn't been updated in years that will still install and run on old devices. Apple basically forced all developers to 64-bit-ize their apps or it got yanked from the store, so if you've got a 32-bit iDevice, good luck.

Really enjoyed this one! I had one of their Android tablets from that era and loved the form factor - but yeah, it was *just* an Android tablet, so I ended up not using it much. That said - I spent the entire video going "It's called the Transformer Trio, it's a Quick Start video -- when he going to reveal they also shoehorned in a third quickboot OS?" ...do you have any idea why it was called the Trio? Is it because it's a laptop, a tablet, and I guess technically a desktop (using the Windows bottom plugged into a monitor?)

cathoderaydude

I believe that was the justification, yeah, that it was laptop, tablet and desktop. I consider this a quick start video because it is a Windows machine that also comes with a more efficient OS that you can use instead, presumably at much lower battery consumption

cathoderaydude

Yep, I still intend to do that one, it's just not one of the more exciting entries as you guessed, haha. It's really kind of a nothing object in fact, and I might use it to cap off the series

Strawberry Daquiri

Wonder if it would be possible to break out the video inputs on that dock connector, have a little battery powered HD monitor

asecondduck

Thanks for the reply! And yeah, I completely agree it counts as a Quick Start video, it's just that previous ones have had me prepared for silly things like "two copies of windows!" and "the OSes are being lied to about the computer's ram", not "actually, this is a well thought out and built hybrid device" :) It's a nice change!

_Pai

I'm surprised Samsung never tried anything like this given it's an obvious overlap of their product lines. These days they could even pull a reverse of Asus and have both devices running ARM processors.

cathoderaydude

They did actually, although I think theirs was emulation based. It failed to make it to market before the crackdown happened I believe

I assume the reason why vendors can't customise chrome is because there is no add-on support in the mobile version so customising it would break Google play updates and/or create the sort of vendor fragmentation that Google is desperately trying to prevent

Nick Daniels

And now we're back to splitting the notifications and settings 🤣

What's the explanation for the bezels in Windows 8? I tried Googling and only found questions about edge swiping (which shouldn't rely on bezels) and possibly the Start Screen resolution???

osxdude

Not the casual Raid Shadow Legends offer reveal

cathoderaydude

lmao I forgot to explain that, whoops. It's because windows 8 laptops are all touch capable and in those days touchscreens always had thick bezels.

IrisRealtime

I had one of those laptops and I SWEAR I was so mad it ran Windows instead of Android. I think I would've been even more mad if I knew this one existed. I had that laptop when I was 9, maybe, and our family sold it and I got a nexus tablet instead. Of course, then I wished I had an actual windows laptop. I can only imagine how would my life change if I had the dual booting model...

a clayote

There was *one* other Transformer that did this trick, the All-in-One, which was a fuckoff huge nineteen inch Android tablet that docked to a pretty normal Windows machine. I had one. It was impractical! The tablet part was quite heavy on its own, and you didn't have to drop it very far at all to crack the screen.

a clayote

The "remote desktop mode" hawked by that page was just a branded version of, I want to say Teamviewer? Something like that. Didn't work that well from what I recall...

cathoderaydude

I saw this thing late in the editing process and couldn't believe my eyes. I can't believe they actually sold it.

IrisRealtime

(Replying to CRD) Did you actually test if Android was more efficient or you're just going off of the fact that it's an Atom processor?

cathoderaydude

Atom proc is rated at 3W, a third of the i5, so we can assume it uses less battery power. No idea how it performs clock for clock.

Chickenbread

I'll be honest, this is the best way to implement 2-in-1 Laptops. You get a useful Laptop *and* a useful Tablet. Every other 2-in-1 is, as you mentioned, either a Tablet or a Laptop at heart with the other side being not very practical. Unfortunately it seems like Lenovo never sold the Hybrid where I live, otherwise, I genuinely would've considered getting one tbh...

Scott Kemp

Sounds like another potential video idea.

Chris (KJ7PPK)

Fun fact, they banned the sale of the Trio in Texas due to the Wireless Abortion.

KazTastic222

I think the best implementation of the detachable form factor is the original - the Compaq TC1000/HP TC1100. While it kinda defeats the purpose, a device like this would benefit from it, because the dock changes how the device is used. Even without extra hinges, I'm surprised that the docking connector isn't reversible like the Surface Book. I wonder if it was a subtle message from ASUS to Microsoft. With that being said, I've never been impressed by ASUS's laptops - they adopted the Samsung business model, being more interested in gimmicks than build quality.

adorfer

Speaking of Trio (germany 80ies indie rock band) and the (not-)title of the video: to complete confusion, as a thumbnail you could have used a picture of the house where those 3 Trio guys lived and had their music studios during their first years. (which totally did not look like the place of an rock band but of a granny who likes gardening and is in the HOA...)

cornboy

hey man, i dont mean to pester but i sent you a dm on patreon 🙏

moe

Really delightgul! Just a simple one, that actually works. In the abstract, in the concrete, of course, 3 pairs. I get it.

Asaf Sagi

What if you look at it like it's separating families at the border?

Asaf Sagi

Lower battery consumption, but the device essentially has two batteries. I wonder if the power brick charged both of them at the same time, or prioritized one over the other.

Asaf Sagi

*takes 80 seconds to wake up*

a clayote

btw it's ok if you didn't know, but, Jeremy Soule is very probably a rapist, so, I'd appreciate it if you didn't use his music in future vids

cathoderaydude

did not know that, I just grabbed a song from a game, didn't investigate who made it. :/

a clayote

Yeah it sucks, the soundtrack is iconic, and, it's basically all him. And he's still getting work!

Elsie Hupp

As someone who had a first-generation iPad in 2010… this is not any shittier than that. The only problem is that this came out in *2014*, and iPads were much, much less shitty by then. Honestly the whole Windows Phone saga (and the whole Palm WebOS saga) feels like a case of corporate pulling the plug (or running out of money) than engineering failure. What people forget about Apple is that after Steve Jobs returned in 1997 and axed half of Apple’s product lines, the ones that remained (and later followed) have mostly seen iterative improvements almost yearly, which is what you actually need in order to end up (eventually) with a product that doesn’t suck.

Elsie Hupp

Or, to put it differently, what happened to this product is that venture capital decided to back shameless scams (and gambles) like cryptocurrency and Uber instead of backing meaningful R&D. (This is also known as the “zero-interest-rate phenomenon” [ZIRP] post-2008-recession.)

Elsie Hupp

So to summarize, quite simply, this product line got killed by ZIRP.

Elsie Hupp

If we’re gonna be honest the iPad also ultimately kind of flopped, with sales starting to plateau around this time in the mid-2010s. And Apple’s response to stagnant sales was to increase ARPU by introducing more and more high-end products, a strategy that famously worked well for Apple in the 80s and the 90s… Notably, the iPad launched at $399, and ever since there has AFAIK always been an iPad at or around that price point, despite models being available that are as expensive as MacBooks. Whereas the Apple Vision Pro launched at $3499 and was purchased by Casey Neistat and approximately three other tech YouTubers, who basically all returned the device within its 30-day return window. So even Apple has suffered (in the long term) from ZIRP.
