I'm getting Making Video withdrawal so here's a video.

Over the last four weeks I've written at least 50,000 words on five different subjects and none of it's producible; at least, not at the moment. I know, I know, I don't need to stress about Producing - the thing is, I like Producing, and I'm frustrated when i can't do it, so I keep working and working and hopefully I'll have something early next month. We'll see! for the moment, here's some semi-facts about motherboards.

Rambling about Tyan boards

Interesting that the dual-CPU board is marked "designed in the USA" and the other one seems to be labeled "Milpitas CA". I think this is strange since Tyan is a Taiwanese company. My mental image is that you're offscreen still swathed up like a mummy (yeah I know you're not, but it makes me giggle)

Funny story: my only AMD board had a clip-on fan, with a spring-loaded clip that hooked to loops soldered into the board. One night I hear something go spunnnng and I'm like "WTF was THAT?" so I'm eyeballing the room, and a couple minutes later the computer starts beeping and shuts down. I look down and the fan is hanging out of the case. One of the soldered-in loops was gone, and I'm pretty certain it did not get that hot.

Good to see you back! I don't know if you know this, but you have a soothing voice in addition to picking interesting topics to share with us, and I deeply appreciate you right now. Going through some stressful stuff, and you're a great help in winding down. 💜 AND I get to learn! Thanks, man. Sending you all the best vibes.

The external VRM thing is a dual socket cost saving measure. If you're only running one CPU, you don't need the VRM for the second processor, all the power electronics for that CPU are already on the board.

(Also, this is a thing that persisted up until at least slot 1 days. There are boards for Pentium 3s that need a VRM for their second processor)

As always, if I was patient, you also find it out!

I thought the PPro chipset/northbridge didn’t support SDRAM/DIMMs, only 72pin SIMMs (Fast Page/EDO). Or maybe early dimms didn’t have parity?

There's something so satisfying about finding the pinouts for a secret port your board could have had. Keep that good shit coming

Can I just say I love that a few years ago in some video you said that you don't like PCs because they're all boring and samey and since then like half or more of your videos have been about PCs. There is nothing truer to the autistic experience than being in denial about your new hyper fixation for a while until you realize that's all you've thought about for 3 weeks and you finally reach the last stage of grief.

I think there was also something in there about people not caring as much about the video equipment as they did about the computers. Though I imagine most of us here on Patreon were happy with either. We are a biased audience. The kind of people who would, and did, speaking personally, eat up a video about Tyan boards.

It's also likely they speak slightly different protocols, and the more complex PPro chipset (which has to support simultaneous access to the memory by both CPUs) simply hadn't been adapted to work with the newest memory yet.
