We're so back, it seems.

I've been working hard for weeks with nothing to show for it - shot a video the other day, then had to reshoot 2/3rds of it, then just couldn't bring myself to edit it, too overwhelmed. Pushed everything aside, took a few deep breaths, and contemplated a Guy.

When I got this thing it was out of sheer novelty; I did not expect there to be anything worth discussing, and there really kinda isn't, but it was a good springboard for Saying Words and Doing Stupid Shit and I did both in about equal quantity. I'm ultimately very pleased with the result, though I really need to get another ceiling light to illuminate that back corner and paint the wall if I'm gonna keep using this space. Maybe get a desk that's less... white, too.

Good Luck!

OPAL

LETS FUCKING GOOOOO

This is a great way to do little guys. Just a breath of fresh air after a frustrating video.

Chas Becht

The end mill technique was delightfully barbaric. You could probably still jailbreak that thing by removing the chip that stores the bios, reading it's contents and examining the image to find the password lockout. The juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze, but if you felt the need to assert dominance or just continue the absurdity, it's an option.

cathoderaydude

oh yeah I was thinking about ways to up the ante and, in addition to that, another one is "get another of the exact same chip, put it on an interposer, install an OS on it using another machine, then solder it to the board"

sdomi

HECK YEAH! will watch after work, already excited :D

Strawberry Daquiri

the second film is "The Robe" from 1953. Wikipedia says it was the first film shot in cinemascope :3

Ecter

Yass, a new one! <3

Curtis Duncan

Instant click for little guys, and instant like once the drill press showed up, lol

adorfer

I wonder if the Bios resides on a SPI flash. which should be readable in circuit with a clamp on bracket.

adorfer

I always assumed Multitech got rebranded to Acer back in the early 1990ies. I even found this in Wikipedia. perhaps it was just their PC devision.

The Wooniest Woona

I love me some Little Guys videos! They're like a fun little snack of a video!

Mat Fordon

Oooh, pull up 2StrokeStuffing on youtube with this display. He has been filming everything in anamorphic widescreen. Could scale well to it.

Elorram Basdo

It almost certainly doesn't have a $30/mon payment plan for cellular, industrial cell plans are way closer to $2 a month

Mark Stradling

I do wonder what would happen if you emailed the original vendor and asked them for the bios password. I mean, they stopped selling them years ago and all these customers have removed support. So, would they feel it was still a secret. Unless, of course (likely) their present systems have the same password

Danny Forche

Just FYI, that trick about resetting the CMOS to clear the BIOS password hasn't worked in quite some time, probably close to 10 years. If this BIOS is from 2021, it makes sense that it wouldn't. I'm not sure they "baked in" a password, as much as you just didn't erase the password by resetting the CMOS. I do a lot of e-waste disposal for my company and we get laptops with supervisor passwords set all the time. Trust me, I've tried - anything newer than, like, 2015 just will not wipe that password... you need a ROM flasher. It's because the hardware vendors got wise about it, realizing people would just yank the CMOS battery to erase passwords, and instead they included an EEPROM just for the security settings. Think like how iPhones have a separate chip just for security that interfaces with the main CPU. I got some Windows 7-era ThinkPads which I believe were the first model of Lenovos to do this, so it's definitely at least 10 years old. Googling for the model number and "reset BIOS password", basically the only way to do it is to get a dump of an EEPROM without password set, and then use a ROM flasher to flash yours to that file.

Elorram Basdo

Is there anything preventing brute forcing?

Danny Forche

Not usually, but the passwords can be alphanumeric so good luck with that. If you have a ROM flasher, the easiest way is to just find another system with the same BIOS, and dump the EEPROM. For an industrial PC like this, that's probably not very easy, but for a laptop there are probably tons.

Eva Mix

Absolutely delightful, love watching you do these teardowns no matter how much grand narrative there is. I am curious, did you try plugging it into a standard resolution monitor? With how locked down it is I doubt it would make a difference, but I'm curious if it would reveal any more UI elements

Travis Snoozy

Quick search of the comments here -- lots of tricks to try and get in, hit everything that would have been on my list, except one. Did you try the serial port to see if they put a console there? [Sees the end mills come out] ... oh. Nevermind. 😂

skyhawk

For shits and giggles, I wonder if you could read the BIOS ROM with a SOIC-8 clip? On some devices you have a complication that powering the ROM powers the rest of the machine, but that isn't a problem with the laptops that that's usually done on.....

ascii158

For the next such guy, you could check if the eMMC is exposed as a USB-device *when the guy is turned off*. You would either look for a USB-B-Port(-Header) on the board or try an A-A cable. Plugging them in and dumping an image from a host-computer is the best way to deploy the initial OS.

cathoderaydude

She called the store while I was there and let them know and we tested it on one of the other units lmao. I'm tempted to buy a second one but I can't think of anything I'd do with it and it's not worth it just for revenge

Dante Blando

"Gaff tape? Gaff tape." Hearts! I deeply appreciate that you set up the store with demo modes to sell these screens. I own a matching pair of 29" ultrawide monitors. The vertical is only 1080, but the curved 2560x1080 (7.1:3, close to the 7:3 Cinerama aspect) is still wicked useful. It's a brand name, so even my weirder devices figure out its HDMI characteristics quickly. The 1920x720 from the small size you showed comes to an 8:3 aspect. Your DP to HDMI dongle may have been pat of the problem. Try a DVI to HDMI dongle. I can send you one if you need it. By the way, I love hacking thin clients to my will and could go on for days about my collection. (I just realized how much this reads like my mother's texts, just as paragraphs. Sorry.)

puppygoatworld

Hey! I just resubscribed today because of this video. I used to use these constantly. After watching your video a few times, though, I realized how cringe and dumb it was to use flavored chemical pouches... so I stopped and haven't looked back! You're a real one :3
