hey I picked up two mechanical cash registers thinking I would use them in videos. the one example you saw in the first POS video is the last time you're ever going to see these things. they're both broken insofar as they need to be fully disassembled and lubed and de-rusted, and I thought I was up to the challenge and I absolutely am not. they've been in the way for a year and they are absolutely miserable objects to move around and I just need them gone.

before I send these to a scrapper, anyone who will drive a car to the Seattle area can have both of them for free. I assume nobody's going to respond to accept this burden but if you do, I'm going to give them to whoever says yes first. otherwise I'm probably going to chuck them by the end of the week. ty!

PS: if you want to broker a deal with someone from like a Facebook community or whatever to take them, that's fine too as long as I don't have to do any work other than drive them somewhere.

Can I convert them to pre-decimal pound sterling?

walllable

I might know someone in the area who'd want one who isn't on the patreon... I'll ask around

this is tempting just for the opportunity to have a meet & greet haha. unfortunately I am on the other opposite coast. Hopefully they find a loving home

NateG

The Greater Seattle Trebuchet Society would likely be super interested in them.

cathoderaydude

I can sort of infer what that is, assuming you're serious. if not, lol good bit, if so, feel free to forward

NateG

Oh yeah no, it’s a bit. You can tell because it’s not funny. Although in some degree of seriousness Seattle does strike me as the sort of place with a few healthy hacker/makerspaces that would likely be game to fix them theirselves as a project and/or yeet them at something in a dramatic fashion.

I was just thinking: Dang, I know someone who bought a couple of these somewhat recently... who was it... Usagi Electric?... no.... then I found your original post. 🤦‍♂️ Interested... but unfortunately Seattle is quite a haul from the middle of the East Coast. 🫣

I wish I lived on that side of the country, I'd be there today :)

I feel this, the crushing burden of KNOWING there are ABSOLUTELY people out there who would be giddy to be able to painstakingly restore these kinds of machines, but having NO clue how to get in touch with those people and arrange a pickup. I work at a storage facility and this past month had to wince as we removed two massive old film print enlargers (a Leitz Focomat V35 Autofocus and something else...) and call a junk company to trash an even larger old bag-check x-ray machine that seemed to have PC hardware somewhere inside. But there was just no way I could get it out as quickly as we needed trying to reach out to local retro computing or photography equipment groups :/ Hope you can find new homes for these!

Do you mind if I put out a post on the Fediverse? Lots of people from the area there and I'm sure at least one of them would be overjoyed to have this kind of thing

cathoderaydude

By all means! This post is public so feel free to link it.

GroupNebula563

Done! Side note, would you ever consider getting an account going on there? It's got a sizable number of retro tech people and I've seen enough memes about and references to you on there to assume you'd have a sizable following if you did. Just something to consider :P

ItsSomeGuy

How many gigatons do those things weigh?

Shufflehands220

Unrelated but can you share the burner phone wallpaper? I would love to set that on my backup phone

Hey Gravis, I've been a long time watcher, recently became a Patron. I noticed a couple of times you have mentioned you sometimes take equipment for donation. I stumbled into a thin client device called a Zig10. It is from a defunct or nearly so idea they referred to as a zero client. I didn't know if it's something you might want to look at. I picked up a couple of them, and would be willing to send you one if you like, just let me know. I don't know if it would qualify as a "little guy" since I think it was something you were supposed to interact with, but might be worth looking at. Regardless keep up the good work.

Travis Noble

I'd never heard of 10ZiG before, I'd love to see these in a video from Gravis! They also seem like they'd be up Clabretros alley (though maybe theyre too new for his interests). Thanks for sharing!

I second the motion of you joining Bluesky or the likes of which

GroupNebula563

You can actually knock that out as well by following @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy from a fedi account :P

Veronica

I really hope you've managed to vanquish these nasty gizmos
