https://youtu.be/MQRpIUu3dMwEdit: I've discovered that A) I haven't released a video in a full month and B) even the copy I uploaded two days ago is still not at 4K. I was using this processing delay as an "early access" period, but it seems Youtube is jammed again and the delay may never end.

Since only a fraction of my audience watches at 4K and I desperately need to get a video out, I'm gonna release it now. If you particularly want to watch it in full res, you can grab the raw, high-bitrate version here: Dropbox MP4

Posting this now because YouTube is taking eons to process it to 4k. I would have posted it yesterday but I thought I'd wait until it was full res, and it seems like that could take decades. So anyway: here's a new video.I haven't finished adding chapters or a thumbnail or title or the links I mention in the video, but I wanted to get this out to you all as soon as possible.I have mentioned several times that I have been having a rough time lately. This video is the best I could manage in my state, by which I mean that I don't think it will have mass appeal, and I know it's very long, but it is what I was interested in and had things to say about so it's what I had to go with.I have plans for upcoming videos that are more of a return to my Usual Thing, and I'm hoping by next week I will be "back on the horse" as it were. Thank you all for your patience.

I Built A Really Fast NAS

This video is long because explaining why I did this, and the specific choices I made, requires explaining all the problems I encountered in two years of video creation. These are problems you might also encounter if your aspirations go the same way mine did. Hey! It's always good to see a CRD drop! And two in row! Is there anything we from afar can do to help you?

Scott Kemp

I appreciate the longer videos, personally. You always manage to make a 40+ minute video entertaining.

Respect for designing your solutions around you. People online will tell you the 'best' thing to do, but if it doesn't suit your workflow, it's utterly pointless

Emily Christ

Personally I would much rather see you talk about niche things that you're really into than see you talk about things with mass appeal just for the sake of mass appeal, so I'm looking forward to this one 💜

Well now you know one person who’s set up Windows’ RAID solution (on Server 2012 at any rate). It was surprisingly stable and hands-off for years but wasn’t very flexible or transparent. Definitely would not recommend at this point.

As someone who has gone through many iterations of homelab backup servers this was a reassuring watch. On another note, I feel like you should be able to 3d print adapters for that hub you're using as a drive bay for the T5's. I did some quick searching but was surprised not to see someone had done it already.

Most of the issues with devices dropping to 100m are likely cause the devices are using realtek network interfaces and realtek has absolutely terrible firmware and drivers. It's very common.

I know you're talking about how this wasn't an interesting video compared to some of your others, but it IS the video that got me to sign up for your Patreon, which I had been meaning to do forever. YouTube's processing delays can apparently be very lucrative. Can't wait for this 30GB video to download!

David Wouters

actually the file is 30GB not 16 as the youtube description said, anyway let's see how an M1 mac handles it... i'm on 1Gig fiber but the download is excruciatingly slow from dropbox...

I disapprove of those choices for a multitude of reasons! But you do you. I made my own horrible choices: LUKS, and LVM. Including raid. Under LVM. Not mdadm -- native under LVM. I've had to use a hex editor on the block devices more than once to unwedge. I'm certifiably insane -- though at over 90TB of raw storage (and no Plex server), that's probably already apparent. That said, at least I could recover the LVM screw-ups with a hex editor -- all the screw-ups I've had with my ZFS attempts have led to catastrophic loss of all data.

Very interesting to watch. Over the past couple years I've been helping out a friend running a small video production company deal with their storage needs, starting out with a 2-bay Synology NAS which has now grown into over 180 TB worth of drives in a PowerEdge 720xd + MD1000 SAS expansion running TrueNAS/ZFS, with 10 Gbit fiber networking (on cheap online auction switches that are so old they use XFP modules instead of SFP). They've also been using Blackmagic Pocket 6K but are now migrating to a Sony ecosystem. It's been really interesting comparing and contrasting your struggles and choices with the route we've gone down!

Thank you for that video. I was actually thinking about doing something like that for my home. And despite having been an admin for a small data center (~100 machines) a good decade back, I completely forgot what a pain they can be. I think I will just buy a 8-bay computer case and stick some used hardware in. When it breaks, I stick some other board in, recover the mdraid and continue my life. (I don´t need the speed, I just want some redundancy and network accessible disk space).

Great video! I actually have a somewhat similar setup but with four 800GB SAS 3 SSDs I got for 50 euros each, which was a steal! And I backup everything to eight 1.2 TB SAS2 HDDs I got for 5 euros each, even more of a steal.

Hey there. I have a few Nvidia Tesla T4’s. LMK if you think they’d help with your renders.
