There's a category of video I thought would be a lot more common when I set up my Patreon tiers, and that's "finished, perfectly watchable, but just not what I wanted, so it's going in the trash." As it's turned out however, when I'm not satisfied with a video, it's usually unwatchable crap. That is not the case with the one I finished a few days ago: It's watchable, I just don't like it, so I'm never going to release it.

Normally that would just mean I'm going to reshoot it and do better, but the trouble is, I'm not exactly sure how to do that. After I finished the video I uploaded it, watched it, and felt utterly underwhelmed - but then I spent three days trying to figure out how to do it better and I just can't come up with anything practical. All I know is that I think it's boring, tedious, way too long for what it is, and wanders in such a way that I think people will struggle to hold on to the thread.

I don't know that you'll enjoy watching this, but I did work hard on it, so I don't want to throw it away - and it's not, like, offensively bad, so maybe someone will enjoy it. I'm sure I'll do this right someday, but for the moment I'm shelving it in favor of another Quick Start video that I'm certain will be a lot easier and more enjoyable for me and you. In the mean time, if you'd just like to listen to me talk for an hour, this is certainly that.

I do have one polite request: I'm not looking for criticism on this one. Suffice to say I am already critical of essentially all of it, and will be starting completely from scratch when I reshoot, and it will be detrimental to hear more about what I got wrong.

If you have suggestions for some of the problems I bring up in the video however, feel free to share. In particular, I've already been offered some interesting solutions for the USB power supply, but there might still be something better out there (not USB-PD though; it's just not granular or convenient enough.) I also just don't really have a great multimeter solution, they're all so awkward.

Thank you all for watching, if you choose to. If not, I'll be back soon with Quick Start Gaiden Ep. 2!

It is very easy to solder a wire to a neodynium magnet, so just get a small magnet and solder a wire to it? I have several here just to hook up weird battery packs to my lab supply to charge them.

Dante Blando

@20:13 -- "...or a cargo pocket if you're nasty." His first name ain't baby!

SA007

Ow, and maybe clearly label all the stuff in your toolbag as something clearly not-owned-by-the-thriftstore, just in case someone claims that you are filling your bag with more then you brought. Maybe something like a bright nailpolish or a neon-colored tape?

Peter Chomczynski

All of these $5-$20 items can be found on AliExpress for $5 or less. I've found tons of useable adapters in the $1.79 category. So your total might be more like $20-$30 instead of $100. I actually have a really nice USB adapter kit with a case that includes 6" Type C cable with little adapters.

Zen The Fox

This was fun! Would love to hear more tips for thrifting electronics and stuff too. Been feeling inspired to venture to some stores around here more because of your videos.

FliesLikeABrick

Feel free to post the unwatchable crap here, just with that caveat in mind/alongside it

I'm half way through the video, and I think you are being too hard on yourself. The content is somewhat niche, but that's neither unexpected nor really a problem. I think you could have posted this publicly, and people who weren't interested could keep scrolling. Admittedly, I'm terrible at predicting what other people would be interested in, but "Gravis rambles about DC connectors" seems like a perfectly cromulent genre to me.

Pietro Gagliardi

Still a good video idea; I've been thinking about this myself. I wonder if a small-ish hard case would be better; it'd be less conspicuous than a bag and can easily slip in a jacket pocket. That's inspired by thinking about iFixit kits; they do make super tiny driver kits with just the most common bits, so. Ugh yes weird adapters. I have two troublesome devices I haven't figured out what to do with yet. One is a strange semi-flopped specialized CD player type thing. The actual CD player mechanism is removable and can be used on its own, so the whole device is really two separate devices powered together. 9VDC, 1200mA, center negative I think. None of my 9VDC adapters do more than about 600mA. The other is a Yamaha synth module. Yamaha were bad: since they *also* sold the power supplies separately, they only printed the names of those power supplies on the devices themselves; you had to find the adapter to see the actual power requirements (easier now with image search, at least). This one takes a PA-1505. 15VDC, 600mA, center positive. I have nothing that does 15VDC, not even my other Yamaha gear! I might look into one of those USB variable supplies you mentioned, but I do wonder if they would be good ideas to use long-term, or plugged directly into certain types of phone chargers instead of a power bank. Should I just get one of those bench supplies instead? I hate that everything's from Six Letter RNG Name companies now; I don't know if I can trust *any* of these.

cathoderaydude

It's not that I think it's *terrible*, it's just not what I wanted it to be, so I want to redo it. I think it's perfectly fine fan material but it would probably lose a larger crowd, and more importantly it's just not the energy i wanted. I appreciate it though, does make me feel better!

Dante Blando

We love what you come up with. We wouldn't give you money if we weren't eager to find out what happens when your brain meets the shelves. You're really good at showing enough work, making us wanna come back.

Drew Hoffman

I use the XB-866 type of pocket multimeter, it's a very old design and the quality is garbage but it doesn't beep unless in continuity mode and the probe wires are thin and stiff enough that they fold back in the case easily. Still wouldn't ever try to test 120v or more with it.

Nick R

I'm about 5 mins into the video, but I'm the guy that walks into my thrift store with (deleted paragraphs here) Edit: ok, I see I just typed exact what you end up saying in the video...so...yeah. instead I'll at least give a nice tip about those talentcell packs: they are actually the cheapest 12V UPS I've ever found. This is because they charge and supply through the same cable. I always keep one online on my astrophotography setup (all 12v) and multiple times I've tripped on and yanked the power adapter out of the wall, since it's dark, but the talentcell just kicks in and keeps everything going. Mount, wifi mesh AP, cameras, RPi, etc. No hiccups.

Richard Thompson

This video (or a redo if you must) needs to be published. Great job!

Loonie Lummox

I loved this video, though?? I like seeing how people solve their problems, and Im definitely gonna be carrying a similar set into thrift/junk stores from now on c:

cathoderaydude

Yeah, conceptually I love it, I just didn't like the energy and I want to take another stab at it to get both the content and feeling that I wanted.

cathoderaydude

wow, that's... huh. Like I have worries about edge cases where the thing starts supplying power when it shouldn't, or vice versa, but that is a brilliant use for it

Joshua T Corbin

How about a pair of “digital tweezers” like the Miniware DT71? There are various 3dp models for cases/holders for them as well. Anyhow, echoing everything above: this was great, pls share more “unwatchable crap” anytime, we’re here for it

Bike Forever

Fanny pack = bumbag. Great video

Mr. Manager

I really don't understand why you're so hard on yourself with this video.

cathoderaydude

I don't think it's terrible, it's just not what I had in mind at all. It gets the point across, but I wanted to just do it differently.

cathoderaydude

Glad you enjoyed! re: the tweezers, hm. I feel like they probably COULD fit on the inside and outside of a barrel jack, but the one-button capacitive UI bothers me, I can only imagine getting the thing into some State and having to fiddle with it for five minutes in public to get it to either change modes or just turn off instead of just... twisting a knob, like we've been doing with no problems for 80 years. And I could print a case, yeah, but most people can't, and more importantly, won't.A goal with this video was to present a selection of items you can just buy and use, because most of the target audience is going to be like me: we don't bother buying the parts to build the tools because we know that the parts will arrive and then sit on a desk and get pushed around for three years until we forget what we were even planning on doing with them. spending six bucks to just Have The Item is something people are more likely to actually do, so I wanted to stick to finished products.

Something like this? Paired with a USB-C power bank with PD? https://www.amazon.com/FARSENSE-Adapter-Trigger-3-5x1-35mm-Pressing/dp/B0BGF9DX8J/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2DTJEDZQYW5Q8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.yYqM946aCsCcrImnaawypUIgclvsnktoFFUBrle87VbQjBoYp20XOu7vMNBqSXOPm_PrR08wHqx1bviyZO0S0Gon53Kge02PraEZl7C8e_D2W378Rveh62F6aqqymkMS5FYbdPXwhHh3K1Fv7h2En_IuGrEtkNxiPQKaSKF0wIGHAnbfEwbjCPX_2rxIogm-BWx2PqBWNjeZdJgufYPW3ZSIVBVZ2NC4Ui4iXaF5sCEYDUDvtEodubGd8q6KWb4p44Ph11XJ06Nnr-lLU_PnNlmqNxl_neQZQ5bpO-YYgnc._pDyGhR0Xtin0hvPq_-orCxCDYkOgTgIwuCViu9DPuA&dib_tag=se&keywords=usb+pd+barrel+jack&qid=1708036931&s=electronics&sprefix=usb+pd+barrel+ja%2Celectronics%2C329&sr=1-6

cathoderaydude

The problem is basically that PD only delivers a handful of fixed voltages, they don't go high or low enough for my tastes, and I don't trust the number to actually represent what's being output; the solution I tried puts a voltmeter in the path that shows me what's really coming out, not just what's intended

Eric Lehman

I thought this video was great! With a good title like "Electronics Thrifting Go Bag" I think it would have done well!

Alfred Klek

I dunno, I liked it. That headphone jack adapter thing actually solved a problem for me and i ordered it before I even finished watching the video.
