Haven't named this one yet but I'm so tired of editing it - I just want to release it, I'll name it later. I bought a DVD player basically sight-unseen, mostly because it had a silly name, then sat down to shoot a video about it that was basically just... "here's this thing with a silly name and a silly splash screen, here's something neat you can do with it," and four days later I was on my fifth reshoot because I kept finding out things about it, including an extremely unexpected tie-in with the last quick start episode. Video's kind of a mess, hope you enjoy it.

Extreme nitpick: not that anyone would have cared, but believe it or not, the iPod you displayed at 12:20 (6th gen/classic) actually removed the video output in favor of the inline remote control introduced with the iPhone. I guess they probably didn't feel like manufacturing the earbuds both with and without inline controls. The Photo and 5th gen/Video were the ones that had video out. (Which just goes to show how insanely non-standardised the whole 3.5mm pinout ordeal is. I didn’t even realise the pinout differed between the iPod and iBook till this video!)

cathoderaydude

hahahaha dang it, okay, see, I googled iPod photo and that's what came up, and I didn't bother to check it because generally when you search Apple stuff you get accurate results due to their absurd popularity. It will be very funny to see if anybody else notices this, but thank you for pointing it out.

Jesus dude, I don't have time for this tonight, I have to work tomorrow!

Adam Demasi

Well you sure got an iPod, photo 🙃 (No, money down!)

Julia Mono

What's a guarantee that I'll enjoy this video to bits? CRD ending with "Video's kind of a mess, hope you enjoy it.". Thanks a lot! :)

are those socketed teardrops at 25:20 for... wall mounting?

The second line on the Mediatek chip could be the date code of 2106...21st week of 2006... which would match the datasheet.

Gecko089

Most chips have a manufacturing date in the form of Week/Year on them. The second line on the Mediatek SoC reads 2106. I think you got your answer there. They probably had to pressure wash the dust off these chips.

On the subject of unfortunately named Amazon brands, I have a power strip from "Superdanny" and I just saw a jewelry box from "Titiskin".

Once I bought a pen light for a college class and it came bundled with Super Lusty brand batteries. I think that'd be a nice match for the boifun

Amy Andersen

Can't really blame you on that tbh, naming things is hard

I'd more likely believe week 6 of 2021. The rest of the device was probably made after 2020 because there's a UK CA mark on the back label (not that I think any authority ever certified this), and the other photos of Mediatek chips on Wikipedia are more likely year first then week number in the date code. Besides, Mediatek still sells millions of these a year and it only costs pennies to keep stamping out the same depreciated chip in withered 90nm fabs. Why do a new design when the old one is still selling?

PositiveDigital

I do have to admit that I'd buy a DVD release of the Quick Start saga in a heartbeat. Alas, I doubt there's enough others like me to make such a move financially viable.

cathoderaydude

I mean, nothing would stop me from just making it myself, I'm sure nobody would mind if it was just some burned CDRs with light scribe labels. Hell, I think that makes it better?

_Pai

Lightscribe always makes it better

Speaking of "buttons with an M that should be mute but aren't" The volume controls on the steering wheel in my car have an M in the middle, surely that would be mute but no! Its *Memory*! And it cycles through the saved radio stations (and always resets to the first one first). Bizarre.

I have been doing amateur dvd/blu ray production for a while if you want to do a small run for it i might be able to help 🤣

Natalie Schneider

Also going allong with amateur dvd production, if you need someone to design a menu to put on a dvd to get past that trash interface I’d love to help, honestly I don’t get enough cases to flex my dvd talent

PositiveDigital

That would be pretty cool, so long as it had an actual hardcover case! Though if you're going to put the videos on CDs it might take a few, haha. I think VCD managed to slightly exceed an hour of standard def video per disk?

Ike Armela

I burst out laughing when you explained how to use this while walking :D.

Travis Snoozy

[Suppressed memories unlocked]. (Super) Video CDs were an absolute nightmare to author back in the day. I... am not sure I ever actually got any functional or useful output out of many, many, many hours of trying to encode those damn things. One. I think I might have gotten _one_ conversion to work in a player, and I think I declared success and quit at that point, but I doubt I still have those CD's kicking around.

Travis Snoozy

There's nothing wrong with patchwork quilts. They're warm and comfortable and an art and utility of their own. Unrelated, you should see if you can trick the ESS player into playing NES games. ;)

cathoderaydude

LIkewise, I never got it working. I think they used MPEG2 and the tooling for producing it was just too arcane at the time. I always got monochrome images for some reason.
