Matt here again!

(This is an add-on post to this one, so read that post first)

Sorry for the double post, I figured it''d be useful to have a poll to more clearly get the preference of how (and if) subtitled should be displayed on the vertical shorts videos!

Any more granular feedback to your choice is also very welcomed in the comments here or on the initial post!

Juan.

I like both but I think the subtitles should be a bit higher

Miggys

Personally, I don't like shorts or vertical format. I know I'm a minority when I say this but I prefer longer videos. I prefer normal 10-15 minute Plays videos. I also dearly miss different series like the Completes, Loves, Hates, Tests, FW and so on. I know some of those series are very old but God how I miss them.

Well Read Nomad

TBH I don't really think these are aimed at me, but for whatever it's worth I think the subtitles subtract overall: it's just something else to distract from the game visuals.

Craig (CraigUntlNytTym) Penfold

I do prefer word by word... In terms of reading, the thing that slows me down is moving my eyes from word to word.

Ben Smith

For me, the word-by-word works to grab your attention at the start, but once the detail and the jokes start coming in, it’s too hard to keep along with, so line-by-line wins overall for me. Perhaps a blend is possible?

Qwx

Yeah, word by word is easier for quick talk, like Dan's. I cannot read lines that quick. So word-by-word for shorts. No subtitles for normal videos.

Dammit Peter

I find the word for word way easier to read at that speed, but then I focus more on the subtitles that the actual video

TheEvilHatter

Subtitles are very important accessibility aid, I'm not sure if word by word or line by line has a huge impact on deaf/hoh or viewers with dyslexia/processing disorders.

Jed Lath

The word by word might be a bit distracting but for the rapid ADHD tone of the vertical videos it sort of works.

Filip 'PhilTheDead' Kwasniewski

I think line by line is best readability wise, however you could make it word by word in places to emphasise certain parts like that "the eldritch horrors are coming" part in the no subtitles video. Also, I don't think a separate channel for shorts is needed, YouTube's sub boxes are already a mess, and the main channel is one of a very few that consistently notifies me about new videos.

Logan Hesseling

Posted this in the last thread, but I think the most important part of hard subs in shorts in controlling the visual tempo and rhythm to match the audio. Ideally, you'd mix up your subtitle cadence depending on the script, but, if you want one or the other, single word matches Dan's script reading tempo better.

Josh Kearney

I generally find line by line more pleasant to read, but word by word can be a more engaging and impactful. I'd personally prefer that the Monthly youtube video have it's subtitles togglable since I generally can find something to read distracting from what's being show on screen and I might like to just listen and look at the game.

Darythe Hill

The line by line I feel is better, but in the case of the examples above, the word by word for “the eldritch horrors are coming” from the no subs example would be a good fit for the line by line. Mix it up for artistic emphasis, ya know?

mantos

If you want to do the verticals I'd say the word by word works better, but the "standard" ratio the full lines seem to fit better?

Josh Harding

i think a mix between line and word by word would be nice like when dan speeks faster i should be line but like at the start word by word would be nice

DRISCOLE McLendon

I prefer line by line for overall readability, but ideally there would be a mix between word by word and line by line depending on what Dan is saying in the moment. I also think that the shorts is a really good idea and i would really enjoy this format of video.

Tailmartian

I prefer line by line subtitles on these kinds of things. 99% of the time I use my phone with he sound of. So if I come across a video like this and I'm interested in watching it entirely subtitles are indeed very important because I'll rarely enable my sound because I don't want to bother the others around me (and 90% of the time the audio of video's on social media is annoying anyway). Word by word isn't my thing though because that's to much of a distraction of what is happening in the video. Though I must say that with Dan's talking speed in these one's it'll be hard anyway to watch the video and read the subtitles at the same time.

Kai

Like by line is more what I’m used to, and prefer. Personally I would prefer smaller text so you can make longer “lines”. Another thing to consider is that CC on tiktok is pretty unreliable and just doesn’t show up sometimes even if you’ve enabled it (I know no subtitles is least popular anyway, but that’s the main reason I wouldn’t pick it).

Lewis Phillipson

All I would say is no matter witch one you end up choosing you should put some movement on the text, especially if you go with the line-by-line one.

Ice Trance

Line by line feels far easier to read, but perhaps too static and covering a lot of the screen sometimes. I feel like it could do with some movement, reveal by word, shorter lines, mixed in with bits that are word by word for emphasis, stuff like that.

Thomas N Wyndham

Passing these onto my deaf wife for critique. She’s wanted subtitles on your videos for ages. You’ll have her feedback when she wakes up tomorrow.

Trevbot911

Line-by-line is a lot easier to read and not as distracting as word-by-word but switching to word-by-word for a few jokes like "the horrors are coming", "goth rave in a tarpit", and "heavy manual labor under Area 51" does make them hit a little better. As for the 16:9 videos, I think doing it through YouTube's subtitles feature is best so people can decide whether to have them on or off themselves

panda grill

no idea, but i am pro subtitles

Johnflipper5

I think stylizing the line by line to more, at least in their location, would better help draw viewers attention to what they're supposed to be looking at. I just found it distracting looking at the subtitles and couldn't focus on the video. But that may just be me. And as some said, maybe doing sometimes a word by word, but continuously adding to one line, but only when appropriate.

Devin Albertson

Subtitles are nice for tiktok/shorts. Personally the word by word is really distracting from the gameplay video with them constantly flashing by.

Jay350

The line by line for the short content works better, however I found myself focus shifting from the game itself to words. Possibly moving where the subtitles are placed towards the top will help maintain the game-play itself as the focus for the videos visuals

Josh Sisson

I think somewhere between line by line and word by word.

George Farren

I just woke up and so while my brain is still fuzzy, I found it easiest to take in information whilst still appreciating the video with the line by line subtitles. With no subs, my brain went to mush, with the word by word, I could only focus on the subtitles changing but not actually take in any information.

Welf Garkisch

For shorts the line by line subtitles work very well. I actually like the high line by line subtitles for the 16:9 version in this case but generally, I'd think that optional (lower) subtitles would be better. I'll be back after checking out how other shorts do it and where it works best.

Matthew

I think line by line is good, but the subtitles need to be higher up in the vertical video

Tigerbattle

I think line by line works best out of the three but maybe using wbw occasionally for more emphasis on specific points in the explanation or comedic moments might be a good idea
